After saccharin intake is associated with the consequences of peripheral lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration, rats develop a strong conditioned avoidance behavior against this gustatory stimulus. To investigate the role of central interleukin-1 (IL-1) as a key signal during taste-LPS engram formation, rats were chronically infused with IL-1 receptor antagonist into the lateral ventricle of the brain before, during and after a single association trial. The results indicate that a stable taste-LPS engram can be formed even under the chronic blockade of central IL-1 signaling during engram formation and consolidation.

In naive individuals, the administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) provokes a rapid systemic increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1beta and IL-6, inducing an acute phase response including sickness behavior. Strong associative learning occurs when relevant gustatory/olfactory stimuli precede the activation of the immune system, affecting long-term individual food selection and nutritional strategies. Repeated LPS administration results in the development of an endotoxin tolerance status, characterized by a drastic reduction in the LPS-induced cytokine response.

Several Pavlovian conditioning paradigms have documented the brain's abilities to sense immune-derived signals or immune status, associate them with concurrently relevant extereoceptive stimuli, and reinstate such immune responses on demand. Specifically, the naturalistic relation of food ingestion with its possible immune consequences facilitates taste-immune associations. Here we demonstrate that the saccharin taste can be associated with the immunosuppressive agent cyclosporine A, and that such taste-immune associative learning is subject to reinforcement.

Recent experimental data indicate that we would be well advised to further consider placebo effects in future therapeutic strategies, with a better knowledge of their potency, psychological basis and underlying neurobiological mechanisms. This study investigated the contribution of psychosocial work characteristics (decision latitude, job demand, social support at work, and effort-reward imbalance) to health-related quality of life. Data were derived from 2 aircraft manufacturing plants (N=1,855) at the start of a longitudinal study. Regression analysis showed that work characteristics (1st model) explained 19% of the variance in the mental summary score of the Short Form-12 Health Survey.

To maintain synaptic transmission during intense neuronal activities, the synaptic vesicle (SV) pool at release sites is effectively replenished by recruitment of SVs from the reserve pool and/or by endocytosis. The authors have studied dynamics of SVs using a fluorescence dye, FM1-43, which is incorporated into SVs during endocytosis and released by exocytosis. Drosophila is one of the most suitable preparations for genetic and pharmacological analyses, and this provides a useful model system.

Krox-20, originally identified as a member of "immediate-early" genes, plays a crucial role in the formation of two specific segments in the hindbrain during early development of the vertebrate nervous system. Here we cloned a genomic sequence of Xenopus Krox-20 (XKrox-20) and studied functions of a promoter element in the flanking sequence and associated transcription factors, which function in early Xenopus embryos. Using the luciferase reporter assay system, we showed that the 5' flanking sequence was sufficient to induce luciferase activities when the reporter construct was injected into embryos at the eight-cell stage.
