Cysteine (Cys) detection is recognized as an essential element in this investigation due to the critical function of Cys in several physiological processes in living organisms. A new NIR fluorescent probe SNC-Cys has been synthesized by incorporating a five-membered malononitrile derivatized ring as an electron withdrawing group, and a methacryloyl group detection moiety for cysteine. After adding Cys, SNC-Cys shows an emission of 654 nm and further works as a "Turn-on" probe via ICT photomechanism.

Many animals convergently evolved photosynthetic symbioses. In bivalves, giant clams (Cardiidae: Tridacninae) gape open to irradiate their symbionts, but heart cockles (Cardiidae: Fraginae) stay closed because sunlight passes through transparent windows in their shells. Here, we show that heart cockles (Corculum cardissa and spp.

A near-infrared fluorescent probe, , was designed by substituting the carbonyl group of the coumarin dye's lactone with a 4-cyano-1-methylpyridinium methylene group and then attaching an electron-withdrawing NADH-sensing methylquinolinium acceptor via a vinyl bond linkage to the coumarin dye at the 4-position. The probe exhibits primary absorption maxima at 603, 428, and 361 nm, and fluoresces weakly at 703 nm. The addition of NAD(P)H results in a significant blue shift in the fluorescence peak from 703 to 670 nm, accompanied by a substantial increase in fluorescence intensity.

Hypoxia will accelerate tumors metastasis and deterioration, thereby limiting the effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Thus, developing efficient techniques for detecting hypoxia in tumor cells is extremely important for cancer diagnosis and therapy. In this work, we reported a dicyanoisophorone-based probe (DCI-Azo) that specifically switched on its near infrared emission with hypoxia up-regulated azo-reductase (AzoR).

This study aims to analyze the trends, causes, and future prospects of aerosols in the Arctic region using ground-based observations, satellite data, and reanalysis model data. An analysis of aerosol remote sensing data from AERONET stations in the Arctic from 2000 to 2023 showed a long-term decrease in aerosol optical depth (AOD), aligning with emission regulations in Europe and North America and changes in atmospheric circulation patterns. However, the maximum AOD values observed at AERONET stations in Canada and Russia during the period of 2018-2023 were up to five times higher than the long-term average.

The ability of anthropogenic aerosols to freeze supercooled cloud droplets remains debated. In this work, we present observational evidence for the glaciation of supercooled liquid-water clouds at industrial aerosol hot spots at temperatures between -10° and -24°C. Compared with the nearby liquid-water clouds, shortwave reflectance was reduced by 14% and longwave radiance was increased by 4% in the glaciation-affected regions.

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion materials have recently received widespread attention due to their potential in diverse applications. However, highly efficient organic-based NIR photothermal agents remain limited. Developing strategies to enhance the efficiency of NIR photothermal materials and elucidating the relationship between the NIR photothermal performance and molecular aggregation are highly desired.

In super-resolution, a varying illumination image stack is required. This enriched dataset typically necessitates precise mechanical control and micron-scale optical alignment and repeatability. Here, we introduce a novel methodology for super-resolution microscopy called stochastically structured illumination microscopy (SIM), which bypasses the need for illumination control exploiting instead the random, uncontrolled movement of the target object.

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent agents are extensively used for biomedical imaging due to their ability for deep tissue penetration. Tetrapyrrole-based photosensitizers are promising candidates in this regard. Further, the extended conjugation of such macromolecules with chromophores can enhance their fluorescence efficiency and DNA intercalation ability.

Precise control of cellular temperature at the microscale is crucial for developing novel neurostimulation techniques. Here, the effect of local heat on the electrophysiological properties of primary neuronal cultures and HEK293 cells at the subcellular level using a cutting-edge micrometer-scale thermal probe, the diamond heater-thermometer (DHT), is studied. A new mode of local heat action on a living cell, thermal-capture mode (TCM), is discovered using the DHT probe.

Ferroptosis, a regulated form of cell death driven by oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, has emerged as a pivotal research focus with implications across various cellular contexts. In this study, we employed a multifaceted approach, integrating label-free Raman spectroscopy and microfluidics to study the mechanisms underpinning ferroptosis. Our investigations included the ferroptosis initiation based on the changes in the lipid Raman band at 1436 cm under different cellular states, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, DNA damage/repair, and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Landsat and Sentinel-2 acquisitions are among the most widely used medium-resolution optical data adopted for terrestrial vegetation applications, such as land cover and land use mapping, vegetation condition and phenology monitoring, and disturbance and change mapping. When combined, both data archives provide over 40 years, and counting, of continuous and consistent observations. Although the spatio-temporal availability of both data archives is well-known at the scene level, information on the actual availability of cloud-, snow-, and shade-free observations at the pixel level is lacking and should be explored individually for each study to correctly parametrize subsequent analyses.

Anisotropic polydopamine nanobowls (PDA NBs) show significant promise in biomedicine, distinguished by their unique optical properties and superior cellular uptake compared to spherical nanoparticles. This study presents a novel approach for creating multistimuli-activated PDA NB-armored emulsions, encapsulating perfluorohexane (NB-H) and perfluoropentane (NB-P) cores, with applications in controlled delivery and ultrasound imaging. Thermal and photothermal activation induced distinct responses in the emulsions, as evidenced by optical microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis.

Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) is an aging disorder characterized by expedited loss of corneal endothelial cells (CEnCs) and heightened DNA damage compared to normal CEnCs. We previously established that ultraviolet-A (UVA) light causes DNA damage and leads to FECD phenotype in a non-genetic mouse model. Here, we demonstrate that acute treatment with chemical stressor, menadione, or physiological stressors, UVA, and catechol estrogen (4-OHE), results in an early and increased activation of ATM-mediated DNA damage response in FECD compared to normal CEnCs.

Our study seeks to provide a theoretical foundation for the clinical use of cold-stored platelets (CSPs) by interpreting ultrastructural images and quantitatively analyzing structural changes. CSPs, room temperature-stored platelets (RTPs), and delayed CSPs (delayed-CSPs) were continuously observed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy at eight time points. Elemental carbon (EC), also known as black carbon, plays an important role in climate change. Accurately assessing EC concentration in aerosols remains challenging due to the overestimations caused by carbonates and organic carbon (OC) during thermal-optical measurement in the Tibetan Plateau (TP). This study evaluates the extent of EC overestimated by carbonates and OC at four remote sites (Nyalamu, Lulang, Everest and Ngari) in southern and western of the TP using different treatments.

The efficiency of drug delivery from coatings of metallic implants is one of the key factors. The influence of chemical and thermal treatments of nitinol wire on the corrosion properties, deposition of hydroxyapatite(HA)/poly ε-caprolactone-polyethylene glycol (PEG--PCL), and the amount of ibuprofen released from that bilayer were studied. The hydroxyapatite layer was electrodeposited by pulse current, while the PEG--PCL layer was by drop-coating.
