Background: Recurrent hemarthrosis and resultant hemophilic arthropathy are significant causes of morbidity in persons with hemophilia, despite the marked evolution of hemophilia care. Prevention, timely diagnosis, and treatment of bleeding episodes are key. However, a physical examination or a patient's assessment of musculoskeletal pain may not accurately identify a joint bleed.

CanChild, School of Rehabilitation Science, Institute for Applied Health Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Introduction: Partnering for Change (P4C) is an innovative practice model for school-based occupational therapy developed in Canada and informed by a program of research spanning nearly two decades. National and international interest in P4C necessitated development of an explanatory theory to guide implementation in varied contexts. The purpose of this study is to document the process of theory development and to provide an overview of the initial P4C explanatory theory.

Salinity negatively impacts crop production by affecting physiological and biochemical processes in plants. This study investigates the effectiveness of Nano-ZnO (NZn), proline (PA), Nano-TiO (NTi), Nano-SiO (NSi)), and biochar inoculated with (OSBS) in enhancing wheat tolerance to salinity stress. Pot experiments were conducted under saline conditions with varying rates of biochar and foliar applications.

How is range of motion of the fingers measured in hand therapy practice? A survey study.

Hand Ther

September 2024

School of Rehabilitation Science, Institute for Applied Health Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada.

Introduction: A variety of techniques for measuring finger range of motion (ROM) are available for hand therapist use, however, there is no clear description of which finger ROM methods are preferred in practice. This study explored the preferred measurement techniques, the factors influencing clinical decision-making, and the clinical reasoning processes employed when faced with practice-based measurement scenarios.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional online survey study of hand therapists and American or Canadian Society of Hand Therapists members.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is a highly toxic commonly used pesticide and can seriously harm human health. This study assessed the potential of galangin (GAL), an antioxidant flavonoid, to attenuate oxidative stress, inflammation and kidney injury caused by CPF, emphasizing the role of farnesoid-x-receptor (FXR) and Nrf2. Rats were supplemented with CPF and GAL for 28 days.

Background: Declining cognitive function (CF) and physical function (PF) relate to poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older adults. As health literacy (HL) facilitates health information utilization, it may mediate links between functionality and HRQoL appraisals. This study examined HL as an intermediary between joint CF and PF contributions and HRQoL in Hong Kong older adults.

Introduction: Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is used globally in obstetrics to conduct real time bedside ultrasound scans to answer a clinical question, and it may be conducted by a non-sonography healthcare practitioner. The College of Midwives of Ontario expanded the scope of practice in 2018 to allow registered midwives to perform POCUS during clinical assessments. In response, a POCUS training curriculum for practicing midwives was developed.

Introduction: Physical activity (PA) is critical for disease prevention and maintaining functional ability with aging. Despite this, as many as 50% of older adults in populations worldwide are considered insufficiently active. There is a recognized need to mobilize policies targeted toward modifiable determinants of healthy aging like PA.

The landscape of breast cancer diagnostics has significantly evolved over the past decade. With these changes, it is possible to provide a comprehensive assessment of both benign and malignant breast calcifications. The biochemistry of breast cancer and calcifications are thoroughly examined to describe the potential to characterize better different calcium salts composed of calcium carbonate, calcium oxalate, or calcium hydroxyapatite and their associated prognostic implications.

Revisiting the meaning and the source of health-related constructs and their applications in neurodisability.

Dev Med Child Neurol

February 2024

Department of Pediatrics, CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, Institute for Applied Health Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The aim of this review is to revisit the meaning of common concepts and frameworks promoted to capture subjective outcomes of patients, the content of their corresponding measurements, and the preferred sources of the information of interest. This is important because conceptualizations of 'health' and the subject evaluations thereof continue to evolve. Related but distinct concepts like quality of life (QoL), health-related QoL (HRQoL), functional status, health status, and well-being are often used indiscriminately to assess clinical impacts of interventions and to influence decisions about patient care and policymaking.

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral microbleeds increase the risk of both ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage, complicating treatment choices for patients with atrial fibrillation on various antithrombotic therapies.
  • A study analyzed 7,839 patients, finding that microbleeds significantly raised the relative risk of intracranial hemorrhage (2.74 times) and ischemic stroke (1.29 times), particularly with combination therapies of anticoagulants and antiplatelets.
  • For patients on combination therapy, those with multiple microbleeds faced a higher absolute risk of intracranial hemorrhage compared to ischemic stroke, indicating a need for more research to develop effective preventive strategies.

Introduction: COPD often leads to loss of independence in daily activities which may increase the dependency on the informal caregiver, resulting in caregiving burden. Several instruments have been used to assess caregiving burden in COPD; however, their measurement properties have been poorly investigated in this population. This study assessed the construct validity and reliability of the Informal Caregiver Burden Assessment Questionnaire (QASCI) in informal caregivers of patients with COPD.
