Expressed sequence tags from the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus were generated in order to identify anchor loci for comparative mapping between nematode genomes and candidate targets for future control measures. In total, 370 SL1 trans-spliced cDNAs from different developmental stages representing 195 different genes were partially sequenced. From these expressed sequence tags 50% were similar to genes with a known or predicted function and 19% were similar to nematode sequences with no ascribed function.

Brucellosis, caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella, is a contagious disease that causes economic loss to owners of domestic animals due to loss of progeny and milk yield. Because cattle, sheep, goats, and to a lesser extent pigs are considered to be the source of human brucellosis, serological tests have been used to screen domestic animals for antibodies against Brucella. Glycoprotein E (gE) of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) forms a complex with glycoprotein I (gI) and plays an important role in cell-to-cell spread mechanisms of the virus, but is not essential for propagation of the virus. To study the antigenic variability of BHV1 glycoprotein E, a set of six well characterised monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) was established using BHV1 gE and gI deletion mutants, eukaryotically expressed gE and gI and pepscan analysis. Two of these MAbs reacted with a linear gE epitope (MAbs 3 and 52), two reacted with a more conformation dependent gE epitope (MAbs 61 and 81) and two reacted with epitopes formed by a complex formed between gE and glycoprotein I (MAbs 67 and 75).

Three rabbit antibodies (R521, R505, R524) were produced, and raised to synthetic peptides corresponding to residues 94-105, 100-111, and 223-234, respectively, of the sheep prion protein (PrP). Epitope mapping analysis revealed the monospecific character of antisera R505 and R524. In addition to the amino acid sequence against which it was raised, R521 also recognized other small epitopes.
