The milk urea content is influenced by a large variety of factors, including the quantity and quality of protein fed, its balance with energy, diurnal fluctuations, management, season, analysis method, and also individual cow factors which include the health status of the cow. Aim of this study was to investigate the effects of metabolic disorders (ketosis, ruminal acidosis; indicated by the fat-protein-content of the milk) as well as high somatic cell counts and udder diseases on the milk urea content of dairy cows from different regions and farms across Germany. For this purpose, 5 independent data sets which contain information derived from monthly milk recordings (data sets A (6,140,342 test-data in 2015), data set D (439,767 test-data in 2020-2023), data set E (399,279 test-data in 2019-2020)) in combination with the differential somatic cell count (DSCC) in data set D and E, or individual recordings of daily feed and energy intake and milk analysis (data set B (58,235 test-data in 2014-2017) and data set C (352,346 test-data in 2018-2021)), were analyzed.

This research project aimed to generate basic data for specifying the trace mineral requirements of Fleckvieh (German Simmental) bulls. Hence, the concentrations of the trace minerals iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) in the empty-body and body tissue fractions of growing Fleckvieh bulls slaughtered at 120-780 kg live weight were determined. Results were used to calculate trace mineral accretion rates.

Current diagnostics are limited by their labor requirements and inability to measure multiple metabolic markers simultaneously. It is useful to predict metabolisable energy (ME) concentration based on crude nutrients which can be determined on a laboratory scale to formulate compound feeds for pigs based on ME concentration and to control the declared concentration. In 2008 such an equation was derived premised on 290 balance experiments showing strong associations between ME predicted by digestible crude nutrients and by crude nutrients themselves. Since the suitability of a regression-based prediction equation might be strongly influenced by the number of observations, the current study aimed at 1) checking the suitability of the existing prediction equation by including more datasets and 2) deriving a revised prediction equation.

Dairy cows experience a negative energy balance due to increasing energy demands and insufficient voluntary feed intake in the transition from late pregnancy to early lactation. For supplying sufficient energy toward the conceptus and the mammary gland, insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues is reduced leading to adipose tissue mobilization. Adiponectin, an insulin-sensitizing adipokine, is presumably related to energy metabolism and could play an important role in these metabolic adaptations.

This study was conducted to determine the chemical composition and standardized ileal digestibility coefficients (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) of European soya bean and rapeseed products in pigs. Six soya bean and two rapeseed products were used as the sole dietary source of CP and AA, including raw (FFSB) and roasted full-fat soya beans (FFSB ), soya bean (SBC) and rapeseed cake (RSC), and rapeseed meal (RSM) from Bavaria (Germany), soya bean meal (SBM) from the Danube region (Austria; SBM ), a commercially available standard SBM (SBM ) and an imported genetically modified organism-free SBM (SBM ).
