Objective: Growing qualitative evidence reveals that many patients with chronic illnesses struggle to rebuild a positive self-image after diagnosis while attempting to find a balance between their current physical status and their ongoing social duties. One factor destabilizing patients' identities is self-stigma, which seems to affect their behavioral goals through decreased self-efficacy. We hypothesized that self-stigma would be an independent factor, distinct from self-efficacy, for developing self-care behaviors in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Aims/introduction: Though there are many differences in dietary habits and in the metabolic basis between Western and Asian people, the actual dietary intake in Asian patients with diabetes has not been investigated in a nationwide setting, unlike in Western countries. We aimed to clarify dietary intake among Japanese individuals with type 2 diabetes, and identify differences in dietary intake between Japanese and Western diabetic patients.
Materials And Methods: Nutritional and food intakes were surveyed and analyzed in 1,516 patients with type 2 diabetes aged 40-70 years from outpatient clinics in 59 university and general hospitals using the food frequency questionnaire based on food groups (FFQg).
Introduction: Insulin degludec (IDeg) is an ultra-long-acting basal insulin with a consistent action profile of >42 h. This trial compared the efficacy and safety of IDeg with insulin glargine (IGlar) in insulin-naïve Asian patients with type 2 diabetes.
Materials And Methods: In this multinational, 26-week, open-label, treat-to-target trial, 435 participants (202 females, 233 males; mean age 58.
Aims/introduction: To investigate trends over the past 20 years for the prevalence of obesity and glycemic control in association with a patient's first hospital visit for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Materials And Methods: This was a historical, cross-sectional, time-series, single-center study carried out at Marunouchi Hospital. Data from type 2 diabetic patients who were never treated until their first hospital visit were analyzed for the following periods: 1986-1987 (group A, n = 453), 1996-1997 (group B, n = 547) and 2006-2008 (group C, n = 443).

We have recently demonstrated that basal cardiomyopathy develops in rabbits with ventricular tachyarrhythmias that have been induced by electrical stimulation of the cervical vagus. This study investigated whether similar basal cardiomyopathy would develop in rabbits with ventricular tachyarrhythmias induced by a single injection of adrenaline. Adrenaline was intravenously infused for 10-360 seconds in anesthetized rabbits.

Aims/introduction: An initial 26-week, randomized, open-label study compared the efficacy and safety of exenatide 10 mcg twice daily with exenatide 2 mg once weekly in Asian patients with type 2 diabetes who experienced inadequate glycemic control with oral antidiabetes medications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of exenatide once weekly in Japanese patients, a subset of the initial patient population, who continued into this extension study for an additional 26 weeks of therapy on exenatide once weekly, followed by 10 weeks without exenatide once weekly.
Materials And Methods: Japanese patients initially assigned to exenatide twice daily (n = 62) switched to exenatide once weekly for the extended 26 weeks, and patients initially assigned to exenatide once weekly (n = 74) continued on this regimen for the remainder of the study (total treatment of 52 weeks).

Background: Electrical stimulation of the intact (unsectioned) cervical vagus in rabbits frequently provokes ventricular tachyarrhythmias that are often accompanied by mitral regurgitation. Unique pathological lesions often arise on the mitral valve, papillary muscles, and mitral annulus (mitral complex), the latter two of which become swollen and stiffened. These lesions are reversible in nature.

We examined the effects of a short-term low-calorie diet on the activity of the autonomic nervous system during stress tests in obese patients with hypertension by analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability. Eighteen obese inpatients with essential hypertension were given a regular-calorie diet (1,600 kcal, NaCl 7 g) for 4 days, and then a low-calorie diet (1,100 kcal, NaCl 7 g) for 11 days. During both the regular-calorie diet and low-calorie diet, power spectral analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability at rest and during mental arithmetic test, deep breathing test, isometric handgrip test or cold pressor test was performed.

At the time of the first visit to our clinic, an electrocardiographic examination of a 73-year-old female patient revealed ventricular premature contractions (VPCs) with variable coupling intervals that were diagnosed as parasystole. Characteristically many of the parasystoles had no sinus contractions between two consecutive VPCs, which we referred to as pure parasystole. We first repeatedly examined variations in the length of the parasystolic cycles between January 6, 1997 and March 2, 2003 using electrocardiography.

Background And Aim Of The Study: Cervical vagal stimulation in rabbits frequently induces transient ventricular bigeminies, followed by mitral regurgitation lasting a few days, and development of peculiar lesions of the mitral complex. The present study investigated early lesions of the mitral valve and subsequent deformation of the mitral annulus associated with ventricular bigeminies in this animal model
Methods: A 1-min period of right cervical vagal electrical stimulation was repeated in anesthetized rabbits under ECG monitoring. Animals were sacrificed at 1 h after stimulation to investigate early mitral valve lesions (n = 71; group A), or after one week for measurement of mitral annulus area, using photographic planimetry (n = 56; group B).
