The objective of this study was to determine the chemical, radiological and leaching properties of slag and ash produced by a thermoelectric unit of a former factory Adriavinil and deposited in the area of Kasktel Gomilica near Split, Croatia. A total of 33 samples were analysed. The bioavailable fraction of the slag and ash was estimated using different leaching tests.

Surface marine sediments collected from 8 sampling sites within the Rovinj coastal area, Northern Adriatic, Croatia, were used for determining priority pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and toxic/genotoxic potential of sediment organic extracts. Total PAH concentrations ranged from 32 microg/kg (protected area) to 13.2 mg/kg dry weight (harbor) and showed clear differences between pristine, urban industrial and harbor areas.

A new class of doubly cyclopalladated complexes, {PdCl(dmf)}2(mu-azb) (1) and {PdCl(dmf)}2(mu-aazb) (2), has been prepared in dimethylformamide (dmf) by reaction of azobenzene (azb) and 4-aminoazobenzene (aazb), respectively, with an excess of PdCl2(CH3CN)2 complex. Recrystallization of 1 and 2 in dimethyl sulfoxide (dmso) yields complexes {PdCl(dmso)}2(mu-azb) (3) and {PdCl(dmso)}2(mu-aazb) (4), respectively. The crystal structures of 1 and 4 have been determined by X-ray diffraction.

The presence of DNA single strand breaks in untreated specimens of selected species, mosquito fish Gambusia affinis, painted comber Serranus scriba, blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, spiny crab Maja crispata and sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa as well as in 10 microg/g benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) treated mosquito fish, blue mussel and spiny crab was measured, using alkaline filter elution. Interspecies differences in alkaline elution profiles were observed and attributed to different lengths of DNA from different sources and to differences in the number of strand breaks present during normal cellular events in different phyla. Spiny crab hemocytes are more sensitive to action of BaP then blue mussel hemocytes and mosquito fish hepatocytes that could be explained by differences in the rates of distinct metabolic reactions and DNA repair among the investigated species.

The potential toxicity of organic extracts from 12 seawater samples from each of 24 sampling sites, collected during 1999-2001 along the Adriatic coast, Croatia, was analyzed with the Microtox toxicity bioassay. The results were consistent with the usefulness of Microtox for the detection of accidental toxic events. To determine the water quality of selected areas, cluster analysis for discrimination between groups with similar toxicity load and water quality index as a base for the ranking of sampling sites was introduced.

Vanadium oxide and new V/Ce oxide films on a glass substrate were obtained by the sol-gel process. The morphology of these nanostructured and porous films was studied by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) at the ELETTRA synchrotron (Italy, Trieste). The aim of performing GISAXS was to study changes, which might occur in the grain sizes and the porosity of vanadium oxide and V/Ce oxide at 38 and 55 atom % of V, upon the intercalation of Li+ ions.

Adrenal gland as a major source of enkephalins on the periphery can be affected by a rare adrenal gland tumor, adrenal pheochromocytoma. It has been demonstrated that this tumor might be associated with altered concentration of enkephalin-like peptides. The effect of these peptides can be either prolonged or abbreviated by two neutrophil membrane bound enzymes; aminopeptidase N (APN) and neutral endopeptidase (NEP).

Dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP III) was purified from rat and human erythrocytes using an identical procedure. Electrophoretic analyses revealed the same molecular size and pI for both enzymes. The molecular mass of the human enzyme, measured by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization MS, was 82500+/-60 Da.

This paper deals with the application of scientometric parameters in the evaluation of scientists, either as individuals or in small formal groups. The parameters are divided into two groups: parameters of scientific productivity and citation parameters. The scientific productivity was further subdivided into three types of parameters: (i) total productivity, (ii) partial productivity, and (iii) productivity in scientific fields and subfields.

Problem: The role of antibodies against fetal or maternal antigens in maintaining or losing pregnancy is not clear.
Method Of Study: Term-pregnant mice were injected with monoclonal antibodies against only fetal or fetal and maternal major histocompatibility complex class I molecules. The development of pregnancy was then followed.

We have previously shown that methionine-enkephalin (MENK) alters in dose-dependent fashion the capacity of human neutrophils to produce superoxide anion. The response of neutrophils from different donors was diverse and this effect could be due to variable activity of proteolytic enzymes involved in the degradation of the neuropeptide. In this study, we have demonstrated a highly individual aminopeptidase N (APN) activity of neutrophils from different donors.

We have analyzed the gene that encodes receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium, which belongs to the most ancient and simple metazoan groups, the Porifera. RTKs are enzymes found only in metazoa. The sponge gene contains two introns in the extracellular part of the protein.

The experts' judgement data on microbial degradation were used to develop the first general QSAR biodegradability model (Boethling and Sabljic, 1989) which is composed of a set of structural descriptors and a set of quantitative rules. Its evaluation and validation with experimental biodegradation data clearly show that the developed model gives a realistic and reliable account of structurebiodegradability relationship for organic chemicals. The same set of experts judgement data was used to develop structure-biodegradation rule by the application of an inductive machine learning method.

Wounding of explanted Pinus nigra primary explants followed by infection with Agrobacterium rhizogenes wild strains 8196, 15834, or with the pRiA4abc transconjugant strain of A. tumefaciens (C58 chromosomal background) resulted in adventitious root induction. Roots were formed in 60-97% of explants (1-3 roots/explant) but without a hairy root phenotype.

Neonatal treatment of C3H mice (H-2k) with anti-Kk monoclonal antibodies results in altered cytotoxic responses against allogeneic targets. After 2-3 weeks of antibody treatment, no difference in the number of CD4+8- or CD4-8+ T cells was observed between the antibody- and saline-treated mice. However, antibody-treated mice had a significantly reduced cytotoxic response against various allogeneic major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-expressing targets.

The effect of intact enkephalin (MENK) molecule or its metabolite Tyr-Gly-Gly (TGG) as well as the effect of synthetic agonist for opioid receptor subtypes (DADLE and DAGO) on superoxide anion release from human neutrophils has been investigated. In lower MENK concentrations, where MENK alone had no effect on O2- release, inhibition of enkephalinase by thiorphan significantly increased O2- production, while in higher concentrations, where MENK alone was effective, inhibition of enkephalinase had no effect. Aminopeptidase inhibition by bestatin did not influence O2- release from MENK treated PMNs.

Targeted disruption of the A beta-encoding gene of H2b mice abolishes major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II expression and results in a failure to develop CD4+8- T cells. Besides this major effect, the lack of class II expression affects the level of T-cell receptor (TCR) and CD4 expression on differentiating thymocytes. Moreover, there is no class II-mediated negative selection of thymocytes.

Targeted disruption of beta 2-microglobulin gene results in deficient major histocompatibility complex class I expression and failure to develop CD4-8+ T cells. Despite this, beta 2 M-/- mice reject skin grafts and cope with most viral infections tested. We asked whether CD4+8- cytotoxic T cells would play a role in compensating for the defect in CD4-8+ cytotoxic T cell function.
