Aiming toward a novel, noninvasive technique, with a real-time potential application in the monitoring of the complexation of steroidal neuromuscular blocker drugs Vecuronium () and Rocuronium () with sugammadex (, medication for the reversal of neuromuscular blockade induced by or in general anesthesia), we developed proof-of-principle methodology based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Silver nanoparticles prepared by the reduction of silver ions with hydroxylamine hydrochloride were used as SERS-active substrates, additionally aggregated with calcium nitrate as needed. The and SERS spectra were obtained within the biorelevant 5 × 10-1 × 10 M range, as well as the SERS of , though the latter was observed only in the presence of the aggregating agent.

Tufa deposits in karst rivers are unique habitats created by mutual interactions between specific environmental and biotope features and inhabited by diatoms as a highly abundant and diverse algal group. This pilot study aimed to investigate the diversity of diatom communities on tufa depositing habitats and assess the Una River's ecological status using a comparative molecular and morphological approach for diatom identification. Point Group (PG) symmetries play a fundamental role in many aspects of theoretical chemistry and computational materials science. Three strains of Gram-negative bacterium, Rhizobium, were developed by gamma (γ)-irradiation random mutagenesis. The developed strains were evaluated for their augmented features for symbiotic association, nitrogen fixation, and crop yield of three leguminous plants-chickpea, field-pea, and lentil-in agricultural fields of the northern Indian state of Haryana. Crops treated with developed mutants exhibited significant improvement in plant features and the yield of crops when compared to the control-uninoculated crops and crops grown with indigenous or commercial crop-specific strains of Rhizobium.

Exploring potential energy surfaces to reach saddle points above convex regions.

Saddle points on high-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PES) play a determining role in the activated dynamics of molecules and materials. Building on approaches dating back more than 50 years, many open-ended transition-state search methods have been developed to follow the direction of negative curvature from a local minimum to an adjacent first-order saddle point. Despite the mathematical justification, these methods can display a high failure rate: using small deformation steps, up to 80% of the explorations can end up in a convex region of the PES, where all directions of negative curvature vanish, while if the deformation is aggressive, a similar fraction of attempts lead to saddle points that are not directly connected to the initial minimum.

Given in reperfusion, the use of stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 is an effective therapy in rats. It strongly counteracted, as a whole, decompression/reperfusion-induced occlusion/occlusion-like syndrome following the worst circumstances of acute abdominal compartment and intra-abdominal hypertension, grade III and grade IV, as well as compression/ischemia-occlusion/occlusion-like syndrome. Before decompression (calvariectomy, laparotomy), rats had long-lasting severe intra-abdominal hypertension, grade III (25 mmHg/60 min) (i) and grade IV (30 mmHg/30 min; 40 mmHg/30 min) (ii/iii), and severe occlusion/occlusion-like syndrome.

S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase (AHCY) deficiency results mainly in hypermethioninemia, developmental delay, and is potentially fatal. In order to shed new light on molecular aspects of AHCY deficiency, in particular any changes at transcriptome level, we enabled knockdown of AHCY expression in the colon cancer cell line SW480 to simulate the environment occurring in AHCY deficient individuals. The SW480 cell line is well known for elevated AHCY expression, and thereby represents a suitable model system, in particular as AHCY expression is regulated by MYC, which, on the other hand, is involved in Wnt signaling and the regulation of Wnt-related genes, such as the β-catenin co-transcription factor LEF1 (lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1).

A series of cyano- and amidino-substituted imidazo[4,5-]pyridines were synthesized using standard methods of organic synthesis, and their biological activity was evaluated. Biological evaluation included in vitro assessment of antiproliferative effects on a diverse selection of human cancer cell lines, antibacterial activity against chosen Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains, and antiviral activity on a broad panel of DNA and RNA viruses.
