Asia Pac J Oncol Nurs

November 2023

Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. B R Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, India.

Cancer cachexia is a complex syndrome characterized by progressive weight loss, muscle mass depletion, and systemic inflammation, profoundly affecting the well-being and treatment outcomes of cancer patients. Effective management of cancer cachexia demands a coordinated, multifaceted approach involving various healthcare disciplines and operational strategies. Streamlining care processes is crucial to ensure timely interventions and support, reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment initiation.

Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the spine is a rare childhood cancer with sparse literature on treatment outcomes. We aimed to describe survival outcomes and prognostic factors in patients with spinal ES treated at a single institute in a resource-challenged setting. We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with spinal ES registered at a tertiary care oncology center between 2003-2019.

Article Synopsis
  • The Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI), launched by WHO in 2023, focuses on improving early detection and management of breast cancer across 21 Asian countries.
  • A study investigated data availability for key performance indicators (KPIs) like stage at diagnosis and treatment completion by reviewing literature and national cancer reports.
  • Findings showed that only 57% of countries published relevant national cancer statistics, with significant differences from WHO estimates, and highlighted a strong link between early diagnosis, survival rates, and universal health coverage.

Background: Obesity is associated with greater oxytocin requirement during labor induction or augmentation. There are scant data exploring the intra-operative requirement during cesarean delivery in patients with obesity, and none comparing it with those without obesity. We evaluated the minimum effective dose (ED90) of an oxytocin infusion to achieve adequate uterine tone during cesarean delivery in patients with and without obesity.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to directly evaluate glucose, amino-acid and membrane metabolism in tumor cells for diagnosis and prognostication of recurrent gliomas.

Methods: Fifty-five patients (median age = 36 years; 33 men) with histologically proven gliomas and suspected recurrence were prospectively recruited and underwent 18F-FDG (Fluorodeoxyglucose), 18F-FDOPA (fluorodopa) and 18F-Fluorocholine-PET/CT. Images were evaluated by two physicians visually and quantitatively [lesion-SUVmax, tumor (T) to gray-matter (G) and metabolically-active tumor volumes (MTV)].

The study aims to investigate the patient-reported cognitive deficits and objective neuropsychological functions in younger adult (YA) sarcoma patients (16-40 years of age). Ninety patients and 30 age-matched healthy controls from a single tertiary healthcare hospital, were recruited into four groups: Pre-chemotherapy (Pre Cx), During chemotherapy (During Cx), Post-chemotherapy (Post Cx) and Controls. Neurocognitive functions were assessed subjectively using FACT-Cog v3 questionnaire; objectively using ACE-III and neuropsychological tests (NPT).

Purpose: 177 Lu-PSMA-617 has been shown to improve survival outcomes in patients with end-stage metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. However, data in earlier lines remain limited. In this study, we intended to evaluate the efficacy and safety of 177 Lu-PSMA-617 in patients with synchronous high-volume metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC).

Current stand on systemic therapy in localized soft tissue sarcomas: a clinician's perspective.

October 2023

Department of Medical Oncology, Dr. B.R.A. Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, 110029, India.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare heterogenous tumors derived from mesenchymal tissue. While surgery represents the primary treatment modality, the high recurrence rates following surgery alone necessitate consideration for systemic therapy in high-risk sarcomas. Despite multiple trials and meta-analyses over the last 3 decades, the role of chemotherapy remains controversial.

Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843, United States; Department of Biomedical Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843, United States. Electronic address:

Transthyretin amyloidosis is a severe pathology characterized by the progressive accumulation of transthyretin (TTR) in various organs and tissues. This highly conserved through vertebrate evolution protein transports thyroid hormone thyroxine. In our bodies, TTR can interact with a large number of molecules, including ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that are broadly used as food supplies.

Background: Management of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is evolving with current emphasis on the addition of chemotherapy to short course radiotherapy (SCRT). We primarily aimed to analyse the difference in overall response rates between SCRT with sequential chemotherapy and standard long-course chemoradiotherapy (LCCRT)in LARC.

Methods: After randomization, patients in arm A received 45 Gy in 25 fractions over 5 weeks with concurrent capecitabine while patients in arm B received 25 Gy in 5 fractions over 1 week followed by 3 cycles of CAPOX (capecitabine and oxaliplatin) chemotherapy.

Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric hematological malignancy, with ETV6::RUNX1 being the most prevalent translocation whose exact pathogenesis remains unclear. IGF2BP1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 2 Binding Protein 1) is an oncofetal RNA binding protein seen to be specifically overexpressed in ETV6::RUNX1 positive B-ALL. In this study, we have studied the mechanistic role of IGF2BP1 in leukemogenesis and its synergism with the ETV6::RUNX1 fusion protein.
