Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is poorly understood, with causes identified in only 25% of cases. Emerging evidence suggests links between trace elements (TEs) and POI. This study is the first to compare concentrations of manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) across urine, serum, and whole blood in women with POI compared to healthy controls (HC), aiming to explore their distribution and potential associations with POI.

Cellulose nanofibrils are one of the keystone materials for sustainable future, yet their poor water repellency hinders their push into industrial applications. Due to complexity and poor economical outcome and/or processing toxicity of the existing hydrophobization methods, nanocellulose loses against its antagonist plastic in medical and food industries. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time the "one-side selective water-repellency activation" in nanocellulose membranes by the means of mild N-plasma treatment, exhibiting lowest wettability after 20 s of treatment.

In this paper, we propose a data-driven global observatory methodology that puts together the different perspectives of media, science, statistics and sensing over heterogeneous data sources and text mining algorithms. We also discuss the implementation of this global observatory in the context of epidemic intelligence, monitoring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the context of climate change, with a specific focus on water resource management.

Identifying humans based on their behavioural patterns represents an attractive basis for access control as such patterns appear naturally, do not require a focused effort from the user side, and do not impose the additional burden of memorising passwords. One means of capturing behavioural patterns is through passive sensors laid out in a target environment. Thanks to the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), sensing devices are already embedded in our everyday surroundings and represent a rich source of multimodal data.

Observations from the California Current System (CalCS) indicate that the long-term trend in ocean acidification (OA) and the naturally occurring corrosive conditions for the CaCO mineral aragonite (saturation state Ω < 1) have a damaging effect on shelled pteropods, a keystone group of calcifying organisms in the CalCS. Concern is heightened by recent findings suggesting that shell formation and developmental progress are already impacted when Ω falls below 1.5.

CeNiO has been reported in the literature in the last few years as a novel LnNiO compound with promising applications in different catalytic fields, but its structure has not been correctly reported so far. In this research, CeNiO (RB1), CeO and NiO have been synthesized in a nanocrystalline form using a modified citrate aqueous sol-gel route. A direct comparison between the equimolar physical mixture ((CeO) : (NiO) = 1 : 1) and compound RB1 was made.

We study the temperature evolution of quasiparticles in the correlated metal Sr_{2}RuO_{4}. Our angle resolved photoemission data show that quasiparticles persist up to temperatures above 200 K, far beyond the Fermi liquid regime. Extracting the quasiparticle self-energy, we demonstrate that the quasiparticle residue Z increases with increasing temperature.

Fine particulate matter (PM), a detrimental urban air pollutant primarily emitted by traffic and biomass burning, poses disproportionately significant health risks at relatively limited exposure during commuting. Previous studies have mainly focused on fixed locations when assessing PM exposure, while neglecting pedestrians and cyclists, who often experience higher pollution levels. In response, this research aimed to independently validate the effectiveness of bicycle-mounted low-cost sensors (LCS) adopted by citizens, evaluate temporal and spatial PM exposure, and assess associated health risks in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Blood markers of muscle microdamage and systemic inflammation do not adequately explain the reduced performance observed over a prolonged recovery after running a mountain ultramarathon. This case study aimed to determine whether the reduced performance after the Everesting mountain ultramarathon can be further assessed by considering cardiorespiratory and metabolic alterations determined via repeated incremental and continuous running tests. A single runner (age: 24 years, BM: 70 kg, BMI: 22, Vo: 74 mL∙min∙kg) was observed over a preparatory period of two months with a one-month recovery period.

In this study, a novel coating design based on few-layer graphene (FLG) is proposed and silver-decorated micro copper flakes (CuMF) that exhibit both antibacterial and antiviral properties. The role of sacrificial anode surfaces and intrinsic graphene defects in enhancing the release of metal ions from CuMF embedded in water-based binders is investigated.

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with chemical and structural diversity have piqued the interest of the scientific community due to their superior photonic, mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and catalytic capabilities that distinguish them from their bulk counterparts. Among these 2D materials, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides with a general chemical formula of MXT (where = 1-3), together known as MXenes, have gained tremendous popularity and demonstrated competitive performance in biosensing applications. In this review, we focus on the cutting-edge advances in MXene-related biomaterials, with a systematic summary on their design, synthesis, surface engineering approaches, unique properties, and biological properties.

Designing useful functionalities in clinically validated, old antibiotics holds promise to provide the most economical solution for the global lack of effective antibiotics, as undoubtedly a serious health threat. Here we show that using the surface chemistry of the cyclodextrin (βCD) cycle and arginine (arg) as a linker, provides more stable ternary antibiotic complex (βCD-arg-cpx). In contrast to classical less stable inclusion complexes, which only modify antibiotic solubility, here-presented ternary complex is more stable and controls drug release.

Purpose: To evaluate visual function parameters during and after an acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) episode.
Methods: A prospective study included 19 fovea involving acute CSC patients with episode resolution within 3 months from the episode onset. Optical coherence tomography, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity (CS), microperimetry (MP), and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) were performed at baseline, 3 and 6 months from the episode onset.

Purpose: The purpose of this prospective study was to predict the effectiveness of subthreshold micropulse laser (SML) based on morphological parameters in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).
Methods: Thirty-one patients were examined at presentation, 3 months, and 6 months after the disease onset. In patients with persistent subretinal fluid (SRF) at 3 months, SML was performed.

The alkali metal sesquioxides A O (A=K, Rb, Cs) are mixed-valent with respect to oxygen and display several degrees of electronic and structural freedom, which give rise to diverse transport and ordering processes. We report on analyses of the respective underlying excitations by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and thermally activated electron transport. Backed by DFT based band structure calculations we identify three possible mechanisms, inter valence charge transfer from peroxide to superoxide, excitation across the Jahn-Teller gap of tilted superoxide anions, and polaron migration.
