This study presents an innovative life cycle assessment (LCA)-centric approach for optimizing the mix design of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) as sustainable alternatives to ordinary portland cement (OPC). The AAMs are developed using electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) and fly ash as precursors. Selective leaching of rare earths, base metals and precious metals from used smartphones.

Discarded smartphones represent a valuable source of rare earths (REE), base metals and precious metals. This study focussed on the optimisation of three-stage selective leaching conditions for REE, copper and precious metals (Au and Ag), respectively, contained in printed circuit boards (PCBs) found in end-of-life smartphones. The effects of several leaching conditions, such as sulphuric acid and thiourea concentrations, were investigated using a statistical approach based on a design of experiments using Box-Behnken methodology.

The aim of this project is to develop and evaluate the economic performance of a complete process for recovering nickel, cobalt, and rare earths (REEs) from nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery waste. The main elements contained in the battery powder are Ni (523 g/kg), La (58 g/kg), Co (39 g/kg), Zn (21 g/kg), Nd (19 g/kg), Sm (19 g/kg) and Ce (14 g/kg). Metal leaching was carried out with 2 M sulfuric acid, solubilising 100% of Ni, 93% of Co and 94% of REEs.

Copper pyrithione (CuPT) is used as a co-biocide in new antifouling paints but its toxicity remains little known. To compare the toxicity of copper-based compounds, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae were exposed for 8-day to CuPT and CuSO at equivalent copper concentrations. Microbial production of 2,3-butanediol (BDO) has received considerable attention as a promising alternate to fossil-derived BDO. Homologous recombination-based gene targeting is a powerful and classic reverse genetics approach to precisely elucidate in vivo gene functions in the organisms across all three domains of life. Gene function studies in Archaea, particularly for those flourishing in inhospitable natural environments that are anaerobic, usually hot, and acidic, have been a great challenge; however, this situation was recently overturned with the increasing availability of genetic manipulation systems in several cultivable archaeal species. The winter ecology of anadromous Arctic charr, an important fish species for Indigenous populations, has remained poorly detailed in the literature beyond descriptions of seasonal fasting and resulting declines in condition. However, prolonged periods of reduced feeding can have significant consequences for other variables, such as tissue contaminant levels. In this paper, a fuzzy logic habitat model was improved by adding water temperature as a key determinant of juvenile Atlantic salmon parr habitat quality. Aquatic ecosystems in the High Arctic are facing unprecedented changes as a result of global warming effects on the cryosphere. Snow pack is a central feature of northern landscapes, but the snow microbiome and its microbial connectivity to adjacent and downstream habitats have been little explored. To evaluate these aspects, we sampled along a hydrologic continuum at Ward Hunt Lake (latitude 83°N) in the Canadian High Arctic, from snow banks, water tracks in the permafrost catchment, the upper and lower strata of the lake, and the lake outlet and its coastal marine mixing zone.
