Since December 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has spread quickly worldwide, leading to more than 280 million confirmed cases, including over 5,000,000 deaths. Interestingly, coronaviruses were found to subvert and hijack autophagic process to allow their viral replication. Autophagy-modulating compounds thus rapidly emerged as an attractive strategy to fight SARS-CoV-2 infection, including the well-known chloroquine (CQ).

The four mosquito-borne dengue virus serotypes (DENV1-DENV4) cause a high burden of disease throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Nevertheless, their precise epidemiological history in Africa, including when and where they originated and were distributed during the 20th century, remains unclear stressing the need for focused research. Accordingly, we conducted a time-scaled molecular epidemiological reconstruction using publicly available and newly sequenced dengue virus genomes of African origin representing all four serotypes to deduce the most likely temporal and spatial transmission routes of each DENV serotype from their ancestral regions to, within and from Africa.

Background: For the purpose of epidemiological surveillance, the Hospital University Institute Méditerranée infection has implemented since 2013 a system named MIDaS, based on the systematic collection of routine activity materials, including MALDI-TOF spectra, and results. The objective of this paper is to present the pipeline we use for processing MALDI-TOF spectra during epidemiological surveillance in order to disclose proteinic cues that may suggest the existence of epidemic processes in complement of incidence surveillance. It is illustrated by the analysis of an alarm observed for Streptococcus pneumoniae.

In recent years, metagenomics and then culturomics, which consists of the multiplication of media and culture conditions and the rapid identification of all bacterial colonies, have generated renewed interest in the human microbiota, and diseases associated with modifications in its composition in particular. The sample transport media included in diverse swab transport systems and the storage conditions are among the factors that influence the results of the culturomics. In this study, we compared the results of culturomics from paired skin, oral and rectal swabs from intensive care unit (ICU) patients using Culture Top sample transport medium as compared to our routine one.

December 2021

Service d'Immunologie, Pôle de Biologie, Hôpital de la Conception, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Marseille, Marseille, France; Aix Marseille Université, C2VN, INSERM UMR_S 1263, Marseille, France.

Persistence of various symptoms in patients who have recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was recently defined as 'long COVID' or 'post-COVID syndrome' (PCS). This article reports a case of a 58-year-old woman who, although recovering from COVID-19, had novel and persistent symptoms including neurological complications that could not be explained by any cause other than PCS. In addition to a low inflammatory response, persistence of immunoglobulin G anticardiolipin autoantibody positivity and eosinopenia were found 1 year after acute COVID-19 infection, both of which have been defined previously as independent factors associated with the severity of COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on antimicrobial resistance and usage trends at Saint George Hospital University Medical Center in Beirut during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, analyzing data from 2015 to 2020.
  • It found a decrease in the isolation density of blood stream infections (BSI) and drug-resistant infections during 2020, with significant drops in carbapenem-resistant and difficult-to-treat infections.
  • The report attributed these positive trends to effective antimicrobial stewardship and infection control measures, indicating that the pandemic did not worsen existing resistance issues.
