Background: Antiplatelet drugs, such as clopidogrel, ticagrelor, prasugrel, and acetylsalicylic acid, may be associated with a risk of adverse events (AEs). Vanessa's Law was enacted to strengthen regulations to protect Canadians from drug-related side effects (with mandatory reporting of serious adverse events [SAEs]).
Objective: To determine whether Vanessa's Law has led to an increase in SAE reporting among antiplatelet users.

Introduction: Obesity is an independent risk factor for postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. POAF in patients with severe obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 35 kg/m) is less studied. Whether waist circumference (WC) improves prediction of POAF independently of BMI among patients with severe obesity remains unknown.

The brain is highly innervated by sympathetic nerve fibres; however, their physiological purpose is poorly understood. We hypothesized that unilateral cerebral norepinephrine (NE) spillover, an index of cerebral sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), would be elevated when engaging the baroreflex [via lower-body negative pressure (LBNP; -20 and -40 Torr)] and respiratory chemoreflexes [via carbon dioxide (CO) administration (+8 Torr)], independently, and in combination. Twelve young and healthy participants (5 females) underwent simultaneous blood sampling from the right radial artery and internal jugular vein.

This review looks into sedentary behavior (SB) beyond its simplistic definition of "sitting" while also including sedentary activities. It explores the definition, physiological characteristics, prevalence, and guidelines of SB, contrasting it with physical activity (PA). The discussion encompasses: 1) the association between SB and mortality, with a specific focus on cardiovascular (CV) outcomes; 2) biological mechanisms linking SB to CV health, differentiating between the impacts of acute and chronic sitting additionally, 3) sex and gender differences in SB and, 4) SB as an independent CV risk factor are explored.

Background And Aims: Estimating the genetic risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) is now possible by aggregating data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) into polygenic risk scores (PRS). Combining multiple PRS for specific circulating blood lipids could improve risk prediction. Here, we sought to evaluate the performance of PRS derived from CAD and blood lipids GWAS to predict the incidence of CAD.

N-Phenyl ureidobenzensulfonates (PUB-SOs) are a novel family of dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) inhibitors. Herein, we investigate the potential of PUB-SOs to induce acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell differentiation and apoptosis. To that end, we screened our chemolibrary to select the most potent PUB-SOs based on their antiproliferative activity and their ability to arrest the cell progression of AML cells in the S phase.

Background: An adverse event (AE) is any undesirable medical manifestation in an individual who has received pharmacological treatment. To be considered serious (SAE), it needs to meet minimally one of the severity criteria by Health Canada. The most recent data (2006) suggested that AEs were underreported (<6%) to health authorities.

Introduction: With the implementation of low-dose computed tomography screening, multiple pulmonary tumor nodules are diagnosed with increasing frequency and the selection of surgical treatments versus systemic therapies has become challenging on a daily basis in clinical practice. In the presence of multiple carcinomas, especially adenocarcinomas, pathologically determined to be of pulmonary origin, the distinction between separate primary lung carcinomas (SPLCs) and intrapulmonary metastases (IPMs) is important for staging, management, and prognostication.
Methods: We systemically reviewed various means that aid in the differentiation between SPLCs and IPMs explored by histopathologic evaluation and molecular profiling, the latter includes DNA microsatellite analysis, array comparative genomic hybridization, TP53 and oncogenic driver mutation testing and, more recently, with promising effectiveness, next-generation sequencing comprising small- or large-scale multi-gene panels.

Importance: The use of antipsychotics, antidepressants, and benzodiazepines may influence the risk of mortality in people with schizophrenia. However, many observational studies have not accounted for immortal time bias (ITB), which occurs when there is a period during which patients in the exposed group are necessarily alive and misclassified as exposed (the period between start of follow-up and initiation of drug). Ignoring ITB may lead to misinterpretation of the association between these drugs and mortality.

Background: In the face of province-wide implementation of activity-based hospital funding in Quebec, a need arose to effectively measure pharmacists' contributions along the patient care trajectory and to enable pharmacy benchmarking using valid performance indicators.
Objectives: A 3-phase project was initiated to measure the performance and impact of pharmacists and pharmacy departments. Phases 2 and 3, described here, focused on gradually implementing, in various health care centres, the priority indicators selected in phase 1.

Background: In Canada, 2 guidelines provide guidance for the management of dyslipidemia. The Patients, Experience, Evidence, Research simplified lipid guidelines, intended for primary care practitioners, and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society guidelines, intended for all practitioners, are based on differing methodologies with distinct priorities and preferences. The disparate approaches may contribute to confusion among family practitioners and their co-managed patients, with the potential for compromised care, differing standards for training in the fundamentals of lipidology, and differing criteria that might be used in practice audits to evaluate quality of care.

DFAT cells represent an attractive source of stem cells in tissue engineering and in the potential treatment of several clinical conditions. Our objective was to determine whether DFAT cells originate from mature adipocytes and address whether contamination from the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) could be as a source for these cells. A murine adiponectin-creERT;mT/mG model was used with the excision of the cassette induced by tamoxifen injection for the cells expressing adiponectin (adipoq).

Awareness about laying hen welfare has led to the phase-out of conventional battery cages in favor of the adoption of alternative housing systems for egg production in many countries. However, the greater freedom of movement for animals and the presence of manure and litter (sawdust, straw, feathers, etc.) on the floor in some alternative housing systems may be suitable conditions for dusts, bacteria, and fungi to be aerosolized, raising concerns about indoor air quality and respiratory health of workers.

Background: Students pursuing food-related academic fields such as dietetics have higher orthorexia nervosa (ON) tendencies and are at a greater risk of developing eating disorders (EDs). However, there is limited research available on ON tendencies and on the risk of EDs in the culinary arts field, which also revolves around food. The present study explored ON tendencies and the risk of EDs among culinary arts students and compared them with those of dietetics students.

We developed first-in-class antimitotic prodrugs phenyl 4-(2-oxo-alkylimidazolidin-1-yl)benzenesulfonates (PAIB-SOs) bioactivated by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1 that are highly selective toward several breast cancer cells. However, they show sparingly water solubility. Therefore, we replaced their phenyl ring B with a substituted pyridinyl group preparing novel pyridinyl 4-(2-oxo-3-alkylimidazolidin-1-yl)benzenesulfonates (PYRAIB-SOs) and their hydrochloride salts.

Context: Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activation is closely linked to obesity; however, the sex-specific associations between RAAS activity and body composition among individuals without obesity are not well understood.
Objective: To investigate the associations of aldosterone and renin with body composition according to sex in the general population.
Design: Population-based cohort study.

People use dietary supplements to offset nutritional deficiencies and manage metabolic dysfunction. While the beneficial effect of fish proteins on glucose homeostasis is well established, the ability of fish peptides to replicate the protein findings is less clear. With financial support from a programmatic Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Team grant, we aimed to identify salmon peptide fractions (SPFs) with the potential to mitigate metabolic dysfunction.
