Understanding the nature of the interaction between mercury(II) ions, Hg, and water molecules is crucial to describe the stability and chemical behavior of structures formed during solvation, as well as the conditions that favor the Hg coordination or inducing water hydrolysis. In our study, we explored exhaustively the potential energy surface of Hg with up to six water molecules. We analyzed electronic and Gibbs free energies, binding, and nuclear magnetic resonance parameters.

The mechanisms of tolerance to heavy metals used by some microorganisms identified by bioprospection processes are useful for the development and implementation of bioremediation strategies for contaminated environments with high toxic load caused by heavy metals. A total of seven native microbial isolates were obtained from wastewater bodies from an industrial zone in the municipality of Girardota, Antioquia, Colombia. Subsequently, they were selected to evaluate their lead tolerance capacity at different concentrations.

Stool Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Critically Ill Patients with Sepsis.

J Am Coll Nutr

August 2021

Food and Human Nutrition Research Group, Universidad de Antioquia - UdeA, Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia.

To determine the concentration of stool short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in critically ill patients with sepsis and to compare the results between the critically ill patient and the control group. This descriptive, multicenter, observational study was conducted in five health institutions. Over a 6-month study period, critically ill patients with sepsis who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and met the inclusion criteria were enrolled, and a control, paired by age and sex, was recruited for each patient.

Dataset on application of electrochemical and photochemical processes for sulfacetamide antibiotic elimination in water.

Data Brief

April 2020

Grupo de Investigación en Remediación Ambiental y Biocatálisis (GIRAB), Instituto de Química, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Antioquia UdeA, Calle 70 No. 52-21, Medellín, Colombia.

Sulfonamide-class antibiotics are recognized as water pollutants, which have negative environmental impacts. A strategy to deal with sulfonamides is throughout the application of oxidation processes. This work presents the treatment of the sulfacetamide (SAM) antibiotic by electrochemical oxidation, UV-C/HO and photo-Fenton process.
