Background And Aim: Diabetes has been shown in last decades to be associated with a significantly higher mortality among patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary PCI (PPCI). Therefore, the aim of current study was to evaluate the impact of diabetes on times delays, reperfusion and mortality in a contemporary STEMI population undergoing PPCI, including treatment during the COVID pandemic.

Methods And Results: The ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 is a large-scale retrospective multicenter registry involving PPCI centers from Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia and North-Africa, including patients treated from 1st of March until June 30, 2019 and 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving over 16,600 STEMI patients found a 16% reduction in PPCI procedures in 2020 compared to 2019, with the elderly experiencing the most significant delays.
  • * Consequently, there was a notable increase in 30-day mortality rates during the pandemic, particularly among older patients, attributed to longer ischemia times and treatment delays.

Article Synopsis
  • The "smoking paradox" refers to lower mortality rates in smokers among STEMI patients, particularly in the context of modern primary PCI protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A large retrospective study revealed that among 16,083 STEMI patients, active smokers had better postprocedural blood flow and lower mortality rates compared to both non-smokers and previous smokers.
  • The findings suggest that despite initial challenges in treatment, active smoking was linked to improved heart health outcomes in this patient population, indicating the need for further investigation into this unexpected relationship.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined how SARS-CoV-2 positivity affects outcomes for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who undergo primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), using data from the ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 registry.
  • - Results showed that SARS-CoV-2 positive patients were older, more likely to experience cardiogenic shock, and had worse post-procedural outcomes, including lower blood flow and increased need for thrombectomy.
  • - Importantly, SARS-CoV-2 positivity was linked to higher in-hospital mortality (25.7% vs 7%) and significantly increased 30-day mortality rates (34.4% vs 8.5%), indicating that the virus

Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, concerns have been arisen on the use of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASI) due to the potentially increased expression of Angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE)2 and patient's susceptibility to SARS-CoV2 infection. Diabetes mellitus have been recognized favoring the coronavirus infection with consequent increase mortality in COVID-19. No data have been so far reported in diabetic patients suffering from ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a very high-risk population deserving of RASI treatment.

Objectives: This study investigated the distractive effect of a unilateral pivot splint on patients with unilateral disc displacement without reduction.

Methods: The study group was comprised of 18 patients who had no history of treatment with removable prosthetic restorations of molars, premolars, or canine teeth, and no previous treatment for temporomandibular disorder. Joint spaces measurements made on magnetic resonance images indicated the affected side to be narrower than the healthy side.

Background: The advent of optogenetics has given neuroscientists the opportunity to excite or inhibit neuronal population activity with high temporal resolution and cellular selectivity. Thus, when combined with recordings of neuronal ensemble activity in freely moving animals optogenetics can provide an unprecedented snapshot of the contribution of neuronal assemblies to (patho)physiological conditions in vivo. Still, the combination of optogenetic and silicone probe (or tetrode) recordings does not allow investigation of the role played by voltage- and transmitter-gated channels of the opsin-transfected neurons and/or other adjacent neurons in controlling neuronal activity.

Technetium-99m-ethylene-l-l-dicysteine ((99m)Tc-EC) is an agent with a potential for renal imaging. It is reported that EC uses the same tubular transporter system as ortho-hippurate (OIH) and mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3) and that this agent has good imaging properties and higher renal clearance than MAG3. In this study we used (99m)Tc-EC to compare different washout parameters in renal transplanted patients.

Synchronous carcinoid tumour of the small intestine and appendix in the same patient.

West Indian Med J

March 2007

Department of General Surgery, Istanbul Medical Faculty, Instanbul University, 34430 CAPA/Instanbul, Turkey.

Carcinoid tumours have been reported in a wide range of organs but most frequently involve the gastrointestinal tract. Many of these carcinoid tumours are associated with metachronous and synchronous lesions of another histological type. Primary carcinoid tumours of the different organ in the same patient is rare.

Nickel resistance in fission yeast associated with the magnesium transport system.

Mol Biotechnol

February 2006

Istanbul University, Faculty of Science, Department of Moleuclar Biology and Genetics, and Instanbul University Research and Application Center for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, 34118 Vezneciler, Istanbul, Turkey.

We isolated and characterized a nickel (Ni2+)-resistant mutant (GA1) of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. This mutant strain displayed resistance to both Ni2+ and Zn2+, but not to Cd2+, Co2+, and Cu2+. The growth rate of GA1 increased proportionally with increasing Mg2+ concentrations until 50 mM Mg2+.

The presence of microbial cells on surfaces results in the formation of biofilms, which may also give rise to microbiologically influenced corrosion. Biofilms accumulate on all submerged industrial and environmental surfaces. The efficacy of disinfectants is usually evaluated using planktonic cultures, which often leads to an underestimate of the concentration required to control a biofilm.

Statement Of Problem: Although the bond strengths of various resin composite luting materials have been reported in the literature, the evaluation of these systems with various cast alloys of different compositions has not been completely clarified.

Purpose: To evaluate the tensile bond strength of sandblasted high-noble, noble, and base metal alloys bonded to etched enamel by 2 different bonding agents of different chemical composition: Panavia-Ex (BIS-GMA) and Super-Bond (4-META acrylic).

Material And Methods: Flat enamel surfaces were prepared on buccal surfaces of 60 extracted noncarious human incisors.

This study was designed to evaluate whether the addition of potassium channel blockers, tetraethylammonium, 4-aminopyridine or glibenclamide, to St Thomas' cardioplegia improved myocardial preservation over that achieved by St Thomas' cardioplegic solution alone. Initially, isolated rat hearts were subjected to 30 min of continuous normothermic hypoxic cardioplegia. Control hearts were arrested with St Thomas' cardioplegia followed by tetraethylammonium, glibenclamide or 4-aminopyridine-enriched cardioplegia.

Pituitary macroadenoma in Addison's disease.

J Int Med Res

September 1996

Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Instanbul University, Turkey.

Long-standing primary failure of pituitary-dependent endocrine glands may lead to hyperplasia of the pituitary cells. These changes in the pituitary gland may be correlated with the severity and duration of target-endocrine gland insufficiency. Production of adrenocorticotrophic hormone by the pituitary tumour and modest hyperprolactinaemia may develop due to adrenocortical insufficiency, but production of prolactin by the pituitary tumour due to primary adrenal insufficiency is rare.
