Does stammering act as a barrier to exercise and sport in Irish adults who stammer?

J Fluency Disord

December 2021

Centre for Injury Prevention and Performance, Athletic Therapy and Training, School of Health and Human Performance, Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland; Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland.

Purpose: Exercise and sport participation lead to many physical and psychosocial benefits. However, barriers to exercise and sporting participation exist. This study aims to examine if stammering acts as a barrier to exercise and sporting participation in adults.

How recreational marathon runners hit the wall: A large-scale data analysis of late-race pacing collapse in the marathon.

PLoS One

October 2021

Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, School of Computer Science, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland.

Introduction: In the marathon, how runners pace and fuel their race can have a major impact on race outcome. The phenomenon known as hitting the wall (HTW) refers to the iconic hazard of the marathon distance, in which runners experience a significant slowing of pace late in the race, typically after the 20-mile mark, and usually because of a depletion of the body's energy stores.

Aim: This work investigates the occurrence of significant late-race slowing among recreational marathoners, as a proxy for runners hitting the wall, to better understand the likelihood and nature of such slowdowns, and their effect on race performance.

Colorimetric Sensing of Volatile Organic Compounds Produced from Heated Cooking Oils.

ACS Omega

March 2021

INSIGHT SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, National Centre for Sensor Research, School of Chemical Sciences, Dublin City University, Glasnevin, Dublin 9, Ireland.

Measurement of cooking-associated air pollution indoors is an integral part of exposure monitoring and human health risk assessment. There is a need for easy to use, fast, and economical detection systems to quantify the various emissions from different sources in the home. Addressing this challenge, a colorimetric sensor array (CSA) is reported as a new method to characterize volatile organic compounds produced from cooking, a major contributor to indoor air pollution.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from human skin are of great interest in general in research fields including disease diagnostics and comprise various compound classes including acids, alcohols, ketones and aldehydes. The objective of this research is to investigate the volatile fatty acid (VFA) emission as recovered from healthy participant skin VOC samples and to characterise its association with skin surface acidity. VOC sampling was performed via headspace-solid phase microextraction with analysis via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The Feasibility of Equine Field-Based Postural Sway Analysis Using a Single Inertial Sensor.

Sensors (Basel)

February 2021

Institute for Sport and Health, School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science, University College Dublin, Dublin D04 V1W8, Ireland.

(1) Background: Postural sway is frequently used to quantify human postural control, balance, injury, and neurological deficits. However, there is considerably less research investigating the value of the metric in horses. Much of the existing equine postural sway research uses force or pressure plates to examine the centre of pressure, inferring change at the centre of mass (COM).

Multi-strain volatile profiling of pathogenic and commensal cutaneous bacteria.

Sci Rep

October 2020

School of Chemical Sciences, National Centre for Sensor Research, Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland.

The detection of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted by pathogenic bacteria has been proposed as a potential non-invasive approach for characterising various infectious diseases as well as wound infections. Studying microbial VOC profiles in vitro allows the mechanisms governing VOC production and the cellular origin of VOCs to be deduced. However, inter-study comparisons of microbial VOC data remains a challenge due to the variation in instrumental and growth parameters across studies.

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation requires patients to perform a set of certain prescribed exercises a specific number of times. Local muscular endurance exercises are an important part of the rehabilitation program. Automatic exercise recognition and repetition counting, from wearable sensor data, is an important technology to enable patients to perform exercises independently in remote settings, e.

Electrostatically modulated magnetophoretic transport of functionalised iron-oxide nanoparticles through hydrated networks.

Nanoscale

May 2020

Insight SFI Research Centre For Data Analytics; National Centre for Sensor Research; School of Chemical Sciences, Dublin City University, Ireland.

Factors that determine magnetophoretic transport of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) through hydrated polymer networks under the influence of an external magnetic field gradient were studied. Functionalised iron oxide cores (8.9 nm core diameter) were tracked in real-time as they moved through agarose gels under the influence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field.
