Selenium (Se) may help prevent breast cancer (BC) development. Owing to limited observational evidence, we investigated whether prediagnostic Se status and/or variants in the selenoprotein genes are associated with BC risk in a large European cohort. Se status was assessed by plasma measures of Se and its major circulating proteins, selenoprotein P (SELENOP) and glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPX3), in matched BC case-control pairs (2208 for SELENOP; 1785 for GPX3 and Se) nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).

Due to the impact of COVID-19, a significant influx of emergency patients inundated the intensive care unit (ICU), and as a result, the treatment of elective patients was postponed or even cancelled. This paper studies ICU bed allocation for three categories of patients (emergency, elective, and current ICU patients). A two-stage model and an improved Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) are used to obtain ICU bed allocation.

  • Research on antenatal classes has mostly focused on their impact before birth, with limited studies examining mothers' views on their usefulness after childbirth.
  • Antenatal classes have transitioned to emphasize a mother-centered approach, yet understanding mothers' perceptions post-birth is crucial for improving these educational programs.
  • A study involving 259 mothers found that while a majority were satisfied overall, many perceived the specific themes covered in the classes as less impactful, particularly citing gaps in information about labor complications and postnatal care.

Article Synopsis
  • Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare and aggressive thyroid cancer, and a study analyzed survival rates using data from 360 patients across France diagnosed between 2010 and 2020.
  • The median overall survival (OS) for all patients was 6.8 months, with better outcomes for those with certain cancer stages and treatments: stage IVb patients had a median OS of 11.4 months, while multimodal treatments significantly improved survival.
  • Key factors that improved OS included better performance status (ECOG 0-1), earlier cancer stage (IVb), and using multimodal treatments, while pure ATC and a high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR)

Background: Considered the most prevalent noncommunicable disease in childhood, dental caries is both an individual and a collective burden. While international guidelines highlight prevention as a major strategy for caries management in children, health professionals still struggle to implement prevention into their clinical practice. Further research is needed to understand the gap between the theoretical significance of dental prevention and its lack of implementation in the clinical setting.

Increasing disability-free life expectancy is a crucial issue to optimize active ageing and to reduce the burden of evitable medical costs. One of the main challenges is to develop pragmatic and personalized prevention strategies in order to prevent frailty, counteract adverse outcomes such as falls and mobility disability, and to improve quality of life. Strong evidence reports the effectiveness of exercise interventions to improve various physical parameters and muscle function that are cornerstones of frailty.
