Probiotics, particularly those native to the gut microbiota, have a profound influence on the gut environment. In this study, we conducted a randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group comparison trial to investigate the effects of BB536 ( BB536) on the fecal microbiota and metabolite compositions in healthy individuals. We compared the effects of fermented milk produced solely with and (placebo group) and fermented milk supplemented with BB536 (BY group).

is a prevalent bacterial taxon in the human gut that comprises over 10 (sub)species. Previous studies suggest that these species use evolutionarily distinct strategies for symbiosis with their hosts. However, the underlying species-specific mechanisms remain unclear due to the lack of efficient gene knockout systems applicable across different species.

Di-fructofuranose 1,2':2,3' dianhydride (DFA-III) is a cyclic fructo-disaccharide, which is produced by the condensation of two fructose molecules via the caramelization or enzymatic reaction of inulin fructotransferase. A strain of Blautia producta was known to utilize DFA-III as a carbohydrate source; however, the mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we characterized the glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 91 DFA-III hydrolase (DFA-IIIase) from B.

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) placebos are simulated preparations for specific objects and the color simulation in the development of TCM placebos is both crucial and challenging. Traditionally, the prescription screening and pattern exploration process involves extensive experimentation, which is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. Therefore, accurate prediction of color simulation prescriptions holds the key to the development of TCM placebos.

Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure (SBP) of over 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of over 90 mmHg. Hypertension is widely known to be a factor affecting human health, so its prevention is considered important. We investigated the effect of casein-derived tripeptide Met-Lys-Pro (MKP) on blood pressure in a randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study.

Dairy products formulated with bioactives are widely distributed in Japan, but it remains to be clear whether a regular consumption of these products would help reduce the risks of incidental functional disability and dementia in older adults. This study aimed to investigate Japanese subjects aged ≥65 y (n=629) that routinely consumed three functional dairy products, a calcium-enriched milk supplemented with Bifidobacterium longum BB536, a yogurt supplemented with lactoferrin, B. longum BB536 and heat-killed Lacticaseibacillus paracasei MCC1849, and a drinkable yogurt supplemented with lactoferrin, B.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Our previous study confirmed that daily intake of casein hydrolysate that contained Met-Lys-Pro (MKP) can safely lower mildly elevated blood pressure. The present study aimed to evaluate the intestinal absorption differences between peptide MKP as a casein hydrolysate and synthetic MKP alone using Caco-2 cells and human iPS cell-derived small intestinal epithelial cells (hiSIECs).

Based on high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS~E) and molecular docking technique, bitter compounds of Ginkgo biloba extract(GBE) were characterized, and their relationship with bitter efficacy was investigated. Firstly, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS~E was used for qualitative analysis of GBE components, and 60 chemical components were identified. These chemical components were molecular-docked with bitter receptors, and 26 bitter substances were selected, mainly flavonoids.

Inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) is an effective pharmacotherapy for the management of type 2 diabetes. Recent findings have suggested that various dietary proteins can serve as precursors to peptides that inhibit DPP-IV. Although several DPP-IV inhibitory peptides derived from food materials have been reported, more effective inhibitory peptides remain to be discovered.

Resistin plays an important role in the pathophysiology of obesity-mediated insulin resistance in mice. However, the biology of resistin in humans is quite different from that in rodents. Therefore, the association between resistin and insulin resistance remains unclear in humans.

Although the serum albumin redox state, expressed as the ratio of reduced albumin (Alb) to total Alb (the reduced albumin ratio), has the potential to overcome this challenge, empirical epidemiological data are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the association between a serum reduced Alb ratio and dietary protein intake among community-dwelling older adults.

Probiotics are widely used in food for their health benefits to the host. Inactivated probiotics also reportedly improve the intestinal environment and immune regulation. Our previous studies showed that heat-killed MCC1849 (hk-MCC1849) effectively induced IL-12 production in mouse spleen cells and significantly reduced cold symptoms in clinical trial subjects.

Indole in the gut is formed from dietary tryptophan by a bacterial tryptophan-indole lyase. Indole not only triggers biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance in gut microbes but also contributes to the progression of kidney dysfunction after absorption by the intestine and sulfation in the liver. As tryptophan is an essential amino acid for humans, these events seem inevitable.

Despite accumulating evidence that suggests a unique gut microbiota composition in athletes, a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon is lacking. Furthermore, seasonal variation in the gut microbiota of athletes, particularly during the off-season, remains underexplored. This study aimed to compare the gut microbiotas between athletic subjects (AS) and non-athletic subjects (NS), and to investigate variations between athletic and off-season periods.

This paper aims to study the correlation between the physicochemical properties of raw materials and intermediates and the molding quality and law of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) gel plaster by using TCM slices and powder as raw materials. 48 TCM compounds are selected as model prescriptions to prepare gel plasters. The rotational rheometer is used to determine the rheological parameters of the plaster, including storage modulus(G'), loss modulus(G″), yield stress(τ), and creep compliance [J(t)].

In the process of preparing presonalized concentrated watered pills, the decoction needs to be concentrated by heat and mixed with medicinal slices or powder to prepare a wet mass. However, some of the traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) components are easily decomposed or transformed by heat. In order to optimize the preparation process of presonalized TCM concentrated watered pills and reduce the loss of heat-unstable components in prescriptions, this study uses five compound TCM prescriptions containing heat-unstable components as model prescriptions, namely the Linggui Zhugan Formula, Xiaochengqi Formula, Sanpian Formula, Xiaoer Qixing Formula, and Xiaoyao Formula.
