Impaired folate status in patients with mental disorders.

Acta Neuropsychiatr

January 2025

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Pharmacology, Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway.

Objective: Folate and cobalamin deficiency or impaired function due to genetic variants in key enzymes, have been associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms. The aim of this study was to compare folate and cobalamin status in patients admitted to an acute psychiatric unit to patients from primary health care, in order to reveal factors which may be important in the follow-up of patents with mental disorders.

Methods: Anonymous blood samples tested for folate, cobalamin, the metabolic marker total homocysteine (tHcy), creatinine and glomerular filtration rate, as well as age and gender in patients admitted to a psychiatric acute unit (n=981) and patients from primary health care (controls) (n=32201) were reviewed retrospectively.

Introduction: In general, malnutrition is associated with more treatment toxicity and shorter survival in patients with cancer, but little is known about its impact on limited-stage (LS) SCLC. We investigated whether nutritional status and weight loss were associated with treatment outcomes in a randomized trial of thoracic radiotherapy (TRT) in LS SCLC (NCT02041845, N = 170).

Methods: Patients received platinum-etoposide-chemotherapy and were randomized to receive TRT of 60 Gy in 40 fractions or 45 Gy in 30 fractions.

The effectiveness of bariatric surgery in reducing remnant cholesterol (RC) levels, particularly when obesity is accompanied by elevated glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), is insufficiently investigated. In this study, we aimed to examine the impacts of two common bariatric procedures, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG), as regards their effects on RC and HbA1c levels. Adult morbidly obese subjects were included and assigned to receive either RYGB or SG.

Background: Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) declines and pain responses can occur during radium-223 (Ra) treatment, but their association with treatment outcomes is unclear.

Methods: For patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer treated with Ra in the REASSURE study, we investigated whether ALP decline (Week 12) and/or pain response (during treatment) are associated with improved overall survival (OS). The Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BPI-SF) was used to assess pain at baseline and pain response (in patients with baseline BPI-SF score ≥2).

Importance: The ability of surgeons to choose the right patient for fusion in addition to decompression when operating for degenerative spondylolisthesis with symptomatic spinal stenosis is debated. The addition of fusion increases risk, morbidity, and costs but has been claimed to give better results for selected patients.

Objective: To investigate whether following surgeons' opinions regarding fusion was associated with clinical outcomes.

Introduction: When a child has a disability, their families face significant challenges that also impact parents' and siblings' mental health and adjustment. We examined the potential bidirectional relationships between parental mental health and sibling mental health and adjustment in families of children with a disability.

Methods: We utilized baseline and 12-month follow-up data from a randomized controlled trial of a brief intervention designed to enhance parent-sibling communication in families of children with a disability.

Low-selenium status was associated with impaired renal function, which improved after selenium and coenzyme Q supplementation in an RCT. Here, we evaluated serum glutathione peroxidase-3 (GPx3) and its relation to serum selenium, selenoprotein P (SELENOP), renal function, mortality, and the impact of supplementation, which are all important, especially in elderly individuals. In total, 383 study participants (197 receiving selenium yeast and coenzyme Q and 186 on a placebo) were evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the long-term physical performance and activity levels of older men who have survived radical prostate cancer compared to matched controls.
  • The research included 109 men aged 70 and older who had received robotic surgery or radiation therapy, and their results were compared to 327 men from the general population.
  • Overall, survivors showed similar physical performance and activity levels as controls, with only minor differences in grip strength and balance that might not be clinically significant, indicating that cancer treatment likely did not adversely affect their functional status.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly influential in ophthalmology, particularly through advancements in machine learning, deep learning, robotics, neural networks, and natural language processing (NLP). Among these, NLP-based chatbots are the most readily accessible and are driven by AI-based large language models (LLMs). These chatbots have facilitated new research avenues and have gained traction in both clinical and surgical applications in ophthalmology.

Falls in Persons with Cognitive Impairment-Incidence and Characteristics of the Fallers.

Geriatrics (Basel)

December 2024

The Norwegian National Center for Aging and Health, Vestfold Hospital Trust, N-3103 Tønsberg, Norway.

The annual incidence of falls is high in older adults with impaired cognitive function and dementia, and injuries have a detrimental effect on disability-adjusted life-years and public health spending. In this registry-based study, fall incidence and characteristics of the fallers were explored in a large population with cognitive impairment. : NorCog, "The Norwegian Registry of Persons Assessed for Cognitive Symptoms", is a national research and quality registry with a biomaterial collection.

Background: People with concurrent mental health and substance use problems are among the most socially excluded groups in our society, yet little attention has been paid to what socially excluded people see as central to promoting their social inclusion. The aim of this qualitative scoping review is to provide an overview of barriers and facilitators for social inclusion among people with concurrent mental health and substance use problems, based on first-person perspectives, to help guide future research, policies, and practice.

Methods: We explored first-person perspectives on social inclusion among people with concurrent mental health and substance use problems, employing Arksey and O'Malleys framework.

Article Synopsis
  • - A long-term study in Norway tracked 9,745 individuals for 30 years to explore how midlife depression and anxiety might influence the risk of developing dementia.
  • - The research found that individuals who later developed dementia showed higher rates of anxiety and depression throughout the study, with a notable increase especially in the years leading up to their dementia diagnosis.
  • - The results indicated that mixed anxiety and depressive symptoms were more prevalent in older individuals with dementia, suggesting a significant link between mental health issues in midlife and subsequent dementia risk across various types of dementia.

Article Synopsis
  • Dementia, particularly with severe behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD), greatly affects quality of life and is a main cause of death in older adults; this study looked at factors predicting mortality in these patients.
  • Over 4 years, 32.5% of 508 participants with severe BPSD died, with non-survivors generally being older, more likely male, and showing greater symptom severity and lower cognitive and functional capabilities at the start.
  • Key mortality predictors identified were male sex, older age at diagnosis, higher BPSD severity scores, lower cognitive function, worse daily living capabilities, and lower quality of life, while the use of antidepressants was linked to a reduced mortality risk.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cyanide (CN) is a toxic compound that affects mitochondrial function, leading to potential poisoning from both short-term and long-term exposure to various CN compounds.
  • - Recent research has improved understanding of how CN interacts with copper and iron in mitochondria, disrupting the electron transport chain and causing toxic effects.
  • - Antidotes work by targeting CN's affinity for metal-containing substances, and further studies on its interactions with metalloproteins could enhance treatment methods for CN poisoning.
