VacA is a vacuolation protein toxin secreted by Helicobacter pylori. Many compounds have been implicated in the regulation of VacA toxin activity. In this study, regulation of cell vacuolation induced by VacA was observed with the addition of glycine, glycine hydrochloride, xylitol, and taurine by neutral red dye uptake assay using gastric human epithelial cell cultures.

Zhanbra Dorje, a famous Mongolian physician, is one of the top ten Mongolian scientists. He firstly presented the illustrations for 561 kinds of Mongolian materia medica in his book, Classic Canon of Mongolian Materia Medica, which was greatly helpful to the recognition, collection, using, learning, research and identification of Mongolian materia medica. In this book, he annotated the name of Mongolian materia medica by four kinds of languages, which contributed significantly to the academic and cultural exchanges among Mongolian, Tibetan, Han and Manchu medicine.

The objective of this study was to examine DNA sequence polymorphisms in the 16S-23S rRNA gene intergenic spacer (ITS) regions of five emerging pathogenic Nocardia species: Nocardia beijingensis, Nocardia blacklockiae, Nocardia thailandica, Nocardia elegans and Nocardia vinacea. A set of six isolates belonging to the species of interest and 135 isolates belonging to other Nocardia species was studied. A PCR-based reverse line blot (RLB) hybridization assay incorporating species- or intraspecies ITS rRNA gene operon-specific probes was then developed for species identification.

The neurotoxicity of aggregated beta-amyloid (Abeta) has been implicated as a critical cause in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It can cause neurotoxicity in AD by evoking a cascade of oxidative damage-dependent apoptosis to neurons. In the present study, we for the first time investigated the protective effect of pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), an anionic, water soluble compound that acts as a redox cofactor of bacterial dehydrogenases, on Abeta-induced SH-SY5Y cytotoxicity.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of the pedicle screw fixation and allograft bone in posterior spinal fusion for the treatment of thoracolumbar vertebral fractures.
Methods: From September 2006 to March 2008, 105 cases of thoracolumbar vertebral fractures were treated with allograft bone in posterior spinal fusion after the pedicle screw fixation, including 75 males and 30 males aged 15-65 years (mean 37 years). The mixture which consisted of spinous process and vertebral plate sclerotin and homogeneity variant bone was used as bone graft to implant into articular process and processus transversus space or vertebral plate space.

A sensitive and simple flow-injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) method, which was based on the CL intensity generated from the redoxreaction of potassium permanganate (KMnO4)-formaldehyde in vitriol (H2SO4) medium, has been developed, validated and applied for the determination of naphazoline hydrochloride and oxymetazoline hydrochloride. Besides oxidants and sensitizers, the effect of the concentration of H(2)SO(4), KMnO4 and formaldehyde was investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the linear range was 1.

Bradykinin has been shown to increase the permeability of blood-tumor barrier (BTB) selectively. This study was performed to determine whether tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) was involved in the regulation of this biological process. We found that the levels of TNF-alpha mRNA and heat shock factor-1 (HSF1) protein in C6 cells were markedly up-regulated by bradykinin via real-time RT-PCR and Western blot methods.
