Serotonin Regulates Lipogenesis and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Alcoholic Liver Disease.

Diabetes Metab J

February 2025

Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering, Biomedical Research Center, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Daejeon, Korea.

Background: Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) is a monoamine neurotransmitter that has various functions in central and peripheral tissues. While 5-HT is known to regulate various biological processes in liver, direct role of 5-HT and its receptors, especially 5-HT receptor 2A (HTR2A) and HTR2B, in development and progression of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in vivo is not well understood.

Methods: Blood 5-HT level was measured from both human ALD patients and ethanol (EtOH) diet-fed mouse models.

Characteristics of Plasmodium vivax apicomplexan amino acid transporter 8 (PvApiAT8) in the cationic amino acid transport.

Sci Rep

February 2025

Department of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine, School of Medicine, Inha University, Incheon, 22212, Republic of Korea.

Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread malaria parasite affecting humans, and its eradication is challenging due to the spread of drug-resistant parasites and their ability to remain in liver as a dormant stage. These parasites invade and multiply extensively within hepatocytes and erythrocytes in the host, relying on nutrient acquisition for their growth and replication. A promising new treatment aimed at targeting P.

Background: Adiposity rebound (AR) refers to the period during growth when the body mass index reaches its lowest point before increasing again. The timing of AR is associated with the development of obesity and puberty onset. Although studies have evaluated AR timing in Korean children, none has focused on children born small for gestational age (SGA).

Republicans and Democrats practically everywhere have been demonstrating concerns about environmental conservation to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) since the turn of the century. To promote fuel (energy) savings and a reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide CO emissions in several enterprises, actions have been taken based on the concepts described. This study proposes an environmentally friendly manufacturing system designed to minimize environmental impacts.

Owing to the surge in the demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density, silicon suboxide (SiO )-based materials with impressive theoretical capacities have garnered significant attention. However, challenges such as poor electrical conductivity and substantial volume expansion must be overcome. A common strategy for addressing these issues involves coating SiO with carbon.

Shellfish and fish are common causes of food allergy (FA) in Asia, with significant prevalence rates reported across various countries. This study aimed to identify the diagnostic decision points (DDPs) for shrimp, crab, and cod allergies in Korean children. We enrolled participants aged 18 years or younger with suspected shrimp, crab, or cod allergies through a retrospective review of medical records from a nationwide 14-center study between January 2018 and March 2022.

Longitudinal Trajectories of Asthma and Allergic Comorbidities in the Korean Childhood Asthma Study.

Allergy Asthma Immunol Res

January 2025

Department of Pediatrics, Childhood Asthma Atopy Center, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Purpose: Studies on the longitudinal clinical features of asthma or allergic comorbidities in children are limited. We aimed to examine the trajectories of asthma and allergic comorbidities and determine whether these trajectories differ according to clinical asthma phenotypes from birth to adolescence.

Methods: We enrolled 958 children with physician-diagnosed asthma from the Korean childhood Asthma Study (KAS) cohort.

Police officers are vulnerable to psychological distress and trauma since they are constantly exposed to significant physical and mental violence. Poor mental health can lead to increased healthcare costs for individuals, organizations, and nations and negatively impacts public safety. Mental health interventions tailored to the nature of police work are needed; however, a research gap exists regarding understanding the mental health of police officers.

Contact ion-pair S2 reactions activated by Lewis Base Phase transfer catalysts.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Department of Applied Chemistry, Kyung Hee University, Yongin City, Gyeonggi, 17104, Republic of Korea.

We present experimental probes of contact ion-pair (CIP) S2 reactions for simplest prototype systems by F-NMR spectroscopy. This study provides crucial evidences for the reactions of CIP metal salts facilitated by Lewis base phase transfer catalysts (PTCs) [2,2,2]-cryptand, 18-crown-6, pentaethylene glycols (pentaEGs) and BINOL-based pentaEG. The F-NMR spectra of MF (M = K, Cs) ion-pairs in various solvents are used as fingerprinting tools to identify the CIP CsF/PTC/substrate complexes in S2 reactions.

Background: Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) has been implicated in cross-organ protection in cerebrovascular disease, including stroke. However, the lack of a consensus protocol and controversy over the clinical therapeutic outcomes of RIC suggest an inadequate mechanistic understanding of RIC. The current study identifies RIC-induced molecular and cellular events in the blood, which enhance long-term functional recovery in experimental cerebral ischemia.

This study describes , the first new species of Bathynellidae family reported in East Asia since 2000, and it presents the first molecular analysis using CO1 and 18S gene sequences. Morphological analysis reveals that the new species and previously known species uniquely share key characteristics in the male and female thoracopods VIII. However, the presence or absence of the median seta on the antenna exopod, along with the length differences between the four spines in the furca, distinguish the new species from , 2000.

The increasing CO concentration in the atmosphere has substantial impacts on the global temperature. For energy sustainability and minimization of the effects of global warming, an approach to understand CO capturing and a carbon neutral culture is extremely essential in the present circumstances. The CO emission from vehicles and industries can be minimized using energy cost-effective techniques and can be converted more selectively into reusable fuels via thermochemical, electrochemical, photochemical, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, biological and inorganic carbonate-based approaches.

SEPO-FI: Deep-learning based software to calculate fusion index of muscle cells.

Comput Biol Med

March 2025

School of Computer Science, Chungbuk National University, Cheongju 28644, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

The fusion index is a critical metric for quantitatively assessing the transformation of in vitro muscle cells into myotubes in the biological and medical fields. Traditional methods for calculating this index manually involve the labor-intensive counting of numerous muscle cell nuclei in images, which necessitates determining whether each nucleus is located inside or outside the myotubes, leading to significant inter-observer variation. To address these challenges, this study proposes a three-stage process that integrates the strengths of pattern recognition and deep-learning to automatically calculate the fusion index.
