Objective: In current objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), simulated encounters lacking realism reduce authenticity of assessment as students can take the OSCEs with a search-and-scan approach and trained empathy. Accordingly, patient-centeredness, the fundamental goal of OSCE, is not well assessed. This study evaluated the effect of a change in the OSCE scenario and checklist with respect to detecting students' patient-centeredness.

Background: We report a case of posttransplant contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) that occurred after performing computed tomography (CT) scanning for pretransplant cardiac and vascular evaluation.
Case Presentation: The patient had an 8-year history of hemodialysis and was admitted to the hospital for a kidney transplant from a deceased donor. Cardiac CT imaging and 3-dimensional low-extremity CT angiography were performed to confirm the patient's cardiac and iliac artery function.

The concentration of adenosine in the normal kidney increases markedly during renal hypoxia, ischemia, and inflammation. A recent study reported that an A3 adenosine receptor (A3AR) antagonist attenuated the progression of renal fibrosis. The adriamycin (ADX)-induced nephropathy model induces podocyte injury, which results in severe proteinuria and progressive glomerulosclerosis.

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of CT-P13 (Remsima(®)) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in South Korea.
Methods: This post-marketing study included patients with active moderate-to-severe Crohn's disease (CD), fistulizing CD (FCD), or moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis (UC) treated with CT-P13 and followed for 30 weeks. Assessments included treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and disease-specific clinical response and remission.

A novel therapeutic scaffolding system of engineered nanocarriers within a foam matrix for the long-term and sequential delivery of growth factors is reported. Mesoporous silica nanospheres were first functionalized to have an enlarged mesopore size (12.2nm) and aminated surface, which was then shelled by a biopolymer, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), via electrospraying.

The peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR)gamma agonist is used as antidiabetic agent with antihyperglycemic and antihyperinsulinemic actions. Beyond these actions, antifibrotic effects have been reported. We examined antifibrotic effects of PPARgamma agonist and interaction with angiotensin receptor antagonist in the unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is widely used in diagnostic practice and research, but it is limited due to its subjective nature and weakness in reproducibility. For successful interpretation, IHC requires an internal reference system that controls for procedural variables and provides a staining intensity reference. We investigated the feasibility of using mouse spleen tissue as an intensity reference in conventional IHC.

Burkitt lymphomas (BLs) frequently show secondary chromosomal abnormalities. Here, the authors describe a case of BL with an unusual dual translocation of chromosome 14, t(8;14) and t(14;15), and partial duplication of 1q. This 5-yr-old female patient had several unfavorable prognostic factors including elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase activity and involvement of the central nervous system and bone marrow.

Purpose: We prospectively evaluated the efficacy of a combination of desmopressin and oxybutynin for treating children with nocturnal enuresis, compared to the single drugs imipramine and desmopressin.
Materials And Methods: We enrolled 158 patients from 2003 to 2004. Children were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups and treated with desmopressin, imipramine or a combination of desmopressin plus oxybutynin.

The use of tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) made of polypropylene mesh carries the risk of causing vaginal wound healing defects, which are usually detected within 4 weeks of operation. We present three cases of vaginal wound healing defects after TVT procedures. These defects were managed using surgical techniques aimed at preserving the mesh, but all failed.

The effectiveness of As2O3 treatment was studied in 3 carcinoma cell lines, LoVo, OVCAR-3, and PA-1, and in cancer cells obtained from ascites fluids of 8 patients with carcinomatosis peritonei. LoVo, OVCAR-3, and PA-1 cell lines, and cancer cells from the patients were cultured in As2O3 gradient media; As2O3 sensitivity was evaluated by trypan blue dye exclusion and by morphologic examination after Wright staining. PA-1 was the most sensitive cell line to As2O3; OVCAR-3 and LoVo were resistant to As2O3.

The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of four different methods for measuring wear using an apparatus that simulates known amounts of three dimensional wear. Wear was measured using the manual methods reported by Charnley, Livermore, Dorr and Wan and the computerized method reported by Devane. Only the method reported by Devane measured the three-dimensional (superior and anterior) wear with a reasonable accuracy, with a mean measurement error of 0.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is a serious complication of ovulation induction and has a diverse clinical spectrum from edema to thromboembolism. Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, one of the well known hypercoagulable states, can be also manifested as an arterial or venous thrombosis and recurrent spontaneous abortion. Sometimes a patient with antiphospholipid antibodies might not notice a miscarriage and seek for assisted reproduction treatment, which harbors a chance of developing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

This study evaluated the effect of a grit-blasted diaphyseal surface on noncemented fixation of the Anatomic Porous Replacement II stem (APR-II, Sulzer Medica Orthopaedics, Austin, TX) for improvement of clinical results and fixation. A total of 107 consecutive total hip arthroplasties with the APR-II stem, which has proximal porous coating and a diaphyseal grit-blasted surface, were performed without cement, and 99 were studied at average 4 years. Of these hips, 37 had hydroxyapatite sprayed onto the proximal porous coating, but because there were no statistical differences for performance in any category, all stems were considered as 1 group.

The measurement of the pyrene metabolite, 1-hydroxypyrene, in human urine has been used to assess recent exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The objective of this study was to see whether genetic polymorphisms in metabolic enzymes could explain some of the variation in urinary 1-hydroxypyrene glucuronide (1-OHPG) excretion in relation to smoking. Forty-seven male hospital workers, who were not occupationally exposed to PAH, participated in this study.

This study was carried out to evaluate whether bitumen cytotoxicity is enhanced when bitumen treatment is combined with UVA exposure. We also evaluated the oxidative processes in bitumen-induced DNA damage, and attempted to identify the DNA damage caused by bitumen and UVA exposures, either alone or in combination. The effects of bitumen and UVA on cell proliferation were examined using HL 60 cells.

Nickel compounds are recognized to cause nasal and lung cancers. Magnesium is an effective protector against nickel-induced carcinogenesis in vivo, although its mechanisms of protection remain elusive. The effects of magnesium carbonate on the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity induced by nickel subsulfide were examined with respect to the inhibition of cell proliferation, micronuclei formation, DNA-protein cross-link formation, and intranuclear nickel concentration.

Twenty three hydatidiform moles (HMs) were studied using the techniques of "RFLPs" employing a minisatellite deoxyribonucleic acid probe. Among the 23 HMs, 17 were homozygous types resulting from a duplicated haploid sperm, and two were heterozygous types resulting from fertilization two independent sperms (dispermy). It was revealed that the four histopathologically diagnosed complete HMs (CHMs) were partial HMs (PHMs) with one maternal and 2 paternal chromosome contribution (diandry) or two maternal and 1 paternal alleles (digyny).
