Virtual healthcare has the potential to increase access to allied health for people living in rural areas, but challenges in delivery of such models have been reported. The COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity for a rural practice of physiotherapists and exercise physiologists to transition service delivery to a virtual model of care which utilised a combination of phone, video, an exercise app and/or paper handouts. This study aimed to evaluate the uptake and outcomes from virtual delivery of allied health services, and to describe patient and clinician experiences of the virtual model of care.

Rationale: Alteplase is the only approved thrombolytic agent for acute stroke. An alternative plasminogen activator, tenecteplase, has been previously shown to increase early biological effectiveness (reperfusion) resulting in early clinical recovery in acute stroke patients with target mismatch on perfusion imaging; however, phase III data are lacking.

Aim And Hypothesis: In this study, we assess the efficacy and safety of tenecteplase compared to alteplase in acute stroke patients with target mismatch on perfusion imaging.

Background: Total knee and hip arthroplasty are considered a clinically and cost-effective intervention, however, persistent pain post-surgery can occur, and some continue to take opioid medications long-term. One factor which has infrequently been included in prediction modelling is rehabilitation pathway, in particular, one which includes inpatient rehabilitation. As discharge to inpatient rehabilitation post-arthroplasty is common practice, we aimed to identify whether rehabilitation pathway (discharge to in-patient rehabilitation or not) predicts continued use of opioids at 3 months (90 days) post- total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) whilst controlling for other covariates.

Frailty and risk of subsequent fracture among older adults presenting to hospital with a minimal trauma fracture.

Osteoporos Int

February 2023

South Western Sydney Nursing and Midwifery Research Alliance, Ingham Institute of Applied Medical Research, 1-3 Campbell Street Liverpool, Liverpool, 2170, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the link between frailty and the risk of subsequent fractures in older adults who experienced a minimal trauma fracture.
  • It found that higher levels of frailty were associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing another fracture after adjusting for factors like age, sex, and the site of the first fracture.
  • The research suggests the importance of routinely assessing frailty in older adults after they suffer an initial fracture to better prevent future injuries.

Blood pressure (BP) rises rapidly at puberty. While this is partly due to normal development, factors like excess adiposity and a high intake of dietary sodium relative to potassium may contribute to a true increase in hypertension risk. This study aimed to assess the relative impact of growth, gonadal hormones, adiposity and the sodium-to-potassium ratio (Na:K) on longitudinal BP measures at puberty.

Androgen receptor variant 7 (AR-V7) is an important biomarker to guide treatment options for castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) patients. Its detectability in circulating tumour cells (CTCs) opens non-invasive diagnostic avenues. While detectable at the transcript level, AR-V7 protein detection in CTCs may add additional information and clinical relevance.
