Tapia syndrome is an extremely rare condition involving simultaneous paralysis of cranial nerves X (recurrent laryngeal branch) and XII. It is mostly believed to occur as a neuropraxic complication of intraoperative airway management. We present a unique case of a 17-year-old female with dysphonia, dysphagia, and deviation of tongue to the right side following temporomandibular joint gap arthroplasty for release of left TMJ ankylosis.

Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are prone to develop infections by hospital prevalent organisms. The aim of the study was to determine the bacteriological profiles and their drug resistance pattern among different infections in ICU patients of a tertiary care hospital. The record-based retrospective data of culture reports of the patients admitted to all the ICUs of a tertiary care hospital during the period from January 2020 to May 2022 were analyzed.

Progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease caused by the John Cunningham (JC) virus, which may get reactivated under certain immunosuppressive states such as AIDS, immunomodulatory therapy and haematological malignancies. PML has been reported rarely even in immunocompetent individuals where no immunodeficiency was present. PML characteristically involves periventricular and juxtacortical white matter.

Intraoperative bleeding poses a substantial challenge, particularly in neuro-spine surgeries leading to complications such as hematomas, infections, and hemodynamic instability. Despite their proven efficacy, use of topical hemostatic agents (THAs) lacks comprehensive published literature and guidelines particularly in the Indian setting. The present study provides the first-ever Indian expert panel recommendations for effective adjunct THA use in different intraoperative bleeding sites and situations in neuro-spine surgeries.

Background: Central line (CL)-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) occurring in the intensive care unit (ICU) are common and associated with a high burden.
Methods: We implemented a multidimensional approach, incorporating an 11-element bundle, education, surveillance of CLABSI rates and clinical outcomes, monitoring compliance with bundle components, feedback of CLABSI rates and clinical outcomes, and performance feedback in 316 ICUs across 30 low- and middle-income countries. Our dependent variables were CLABSI per 1,000-CL-days and in-ICU all-cause mortality rates.

Background: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) occurring in the intensive care unit (ICU) are common, costly, and potentially lethal.
Methods: We implemented a multidimensional approach and an 8-component bundle in 374 ICUs across 35 low and middle-income countries (LMICs) from Latin-America, Asia, Eastern-Europe, and the Middle-East, to reduce VAP rates in ICUs. The VAP rate per 1000 mechanical ventilator (MV)-days was measured at baseline and during intervention at the 2nd month, 3rd month, 4-15 month, 16-27 month, and 28-39 month periods.

Sirolimus (mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor) is a potent immunosuppressive agent, used in patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) for Graft vs Host disease prophylaxis. Compared to calcineurin inhibitors, sirolimus has no neurotoxicity or nephrotoxicity, but sirolimus causes dose-dependent thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, delayed wound healing, hyperlipidemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. Here we report a case of acute pancreatitis and diabetic ketoacidosis in a patient with sickle cell disease post haploidentical family donor HSCT which was managed conservatively without plasmapheresis.

Manual grading of cartilage histology images for investigating the extent and severity of osteoarthritis (OA) involves critical examination of the cell characteristics, which makes this task tiresome, tedious, and error prone. This results in wide interobserver variation, causing ambiguities in OA grade prediction. Such drawbacks of manual assessment can be overcome by implementing artificial intelligence-based automated image classification techniques such as deep learning (DL).

Chondral and osteochondral lesions encompass several acute or chronic defects of the articular cartilage and/or subchondral bone. These lesions can result from several different diseases and injuries, including osteochondritis dissecans, osteochondral defects, osteochondral fractures, subchondral bone osteonecrosis, and insufficiency fractures. As the cartilage has a low capacity for regeneration and self-repair, these lesions can progress to osteoarthritis.
