To assess the effect of voice therapy on pitch in professional singers with faulty respiratory kinematics. In this prospective interventional study, professional singers with easy voice fatigability and inability to reach higher pitches, following appropriate selection criteria, were subjected to a 1-month structured voice therapy that transformed their predominant breathing pattern from thoracic to diaphragmatic-abdominal. Acoustic parameters (pitch range and its extreme values before/after therapy, and difference in pitch range) were analyzed using Praat software and compared using standard statistical methods (paired -test).

Article Synopsis
  • The WHO declared COVID-19 a public health emergency in January 2020 and a pandemic in March 2020, prompting NIMHANS to launch a national helpline to address mental health issues during this crisis.
  • An analysis of 70 helpline callers revealed that 71.1% were aged 60-70, 38.6% had preexisting mental illnesses (mainly anxiety and sleeplessness), and many faced additional medical issues.
  • The study found that telephonic interventions, including supportive psychotherapy and information about COVID-19, were effective in addressing the mental health concerns of the elderly during the pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • Inorganic toxicants such as arsenic and lead hinder plant growth and pose serious health risks when contaminated plants are consumed.
  • Researchers have identified a G-protein coupled receptor, NtMelR, in Nicotiana tabacum that mediates melatonin signaling, aiding plants in managing oxidative stress by triggering antioxidant responses.
  • Transgenic plants overexpressing NtMelR showed enhanced survival under agro-pollutant stress, with improved water retention, photosynthesis, and seed production, making them more resilient to environmental challenges.

Cut-off values of coronary risk factors in women with hypothyroidism.

Bioinformation

July 2024

Discipline of Anthropology, School of Social Sciences, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, India.

Women with hypothyroidism are at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases and the consequent mortality. It is not known whether cut-off values of coronary risk factors in women with hypothyroidism are the same as healthy women. This may help to initiate interventions as early to prevent cardiovascular mortality.

Calibration estimation of population total using multi-auxiliary information in the presence of non-response.

Sci Rep

July 2024

Sanskriti Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, Sanskriti University, Mathura, 281401, Uttar Pradesh, India.

This paper considers the problem of estimation of the population total under probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling scheme when complete data is not available due to the presence of missing observations or non-response. The suggested estimators are developed based on available multi-auxiliary information for the response group and non-response group utilizing the calibration approach. The variances of the suggested estimators have been derived up to the first order of approximation.

Introduction: Myeloneuropathy is a diagnosis ascribed to disorders that concomitantly affect the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Recognizing this syndrome may sometimes be arduous, even for the most consummate clinicians, because symptomatology can mimic either spinal cord or peripheral nerve disease. Besides, examination findings suggest a predominantly myelopathic or neuropathic picture.

Background: Teaching epidemiology to young medical students using traditional teaching techniques is fraught with myriad challenges. Incorporating innovative small group teaching (SGT) approaches that promote active learning, practical application, and critical thinking can help in overcoming these challenges.

Aim/objective: To identify the most effective SGT method from selected three approaches [tutorial technique (TT), problem-based learning (PBL), and fishbowl technique (FBT)] to teach the basic concepts of epidemiology to the third-year undergraduate medical students of a private medical college in Puducherry, Southern India.

tRNAs act as adaptors during protein synthesis and are chemically modified post-transcriptionally for their structural stability as well as accuracy of the translation. Hypomodifications of tRNAs are known to cause various human diseases, including cancer. Studies in bacteria and yeasts showed that levels of tRNA modifications vary under different stress conditions, enabling the organism to modulate gene expression for survival.

Drought is undoubtedly a major environmental constraint that negatively affects agricultural yield and productivity throughout the globe. Plants are extremely vulnerable to drought which imposes several physiological, biochemical and molecular perturbations. Increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in different plant organs is one of the inevitable consequences of drought.

The aim of the current work was to decipher the systemic damage and biochemical defense machinery due to combined arsenic (5 mg L NaAsO) and fluoride (50 mg L NaF) stress in two rice cultivars viz., IR-64 (non-aromatic) and Gobindobhog (aromatic), grown for 14 days, under 16/8 h light/dark photoperiodic cycle at 32 °C. Higher accumulation of arsenic and fluoride in Gobindobhog generated higher levels of HO that caused higher electrolyte leakage, along with malondialdehyde and methylglyoxal formation.
