Background The aim of this retrospective study is to establish a correlation between clinical features, surgical diagnosis, and the final diagnosis of laparotomies, as well as to establish the relationship between preoperative delay on the outcomes of surgery in the form of mortality and morbidity. Emergency surgery is high-risk in patients with acute abdomen with uncertain diagnosis. The results of surgery are remarkable and provide quick relief to the suffering and agony of patients with the dreadful condition of acute generalized peritonitis.

Clinician's dilemma: Naproxen-induced liver injury.

Indian J Pathol Microbiol

January 2023

Department of Pathology, SRL Ltd., Fortis Escorts, Okhla, New Delhi, India.

Naproxen is a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in pediatric population, used for mild-to-moderate pains, arthritis, and other immune-mediated disorders. It rarely causes clinically apparent liver injury in the adult population taking high doses of the drug over a prolonged period and is reported even rarer in pediatric population. We present a case of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in a 13-year-old girl taking naproxen in therapeutic doses for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Obstructive sleep apnea and coronary artery disease: An unholy nexus or a holy alliance?

Lung India

January 2022

Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally, and hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and smoking are major cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and CAD share an exciting relationship, and recently, OSA has emerged as a non-traditional CV risk factor. OSA is characterized by episodic sleep state-dependent collapse of the upper airway, resulting in periodic reductions or cessations in ventilation, with consequent hypoxia, hypercapnia, or arousals from sleep.

Article Synopsis
  • ACE inhibitors (ACEI) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) are recommended for treating high blood pressure in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but studies comparing their effectiveness to non-users haven't been extensive across all populations.
  • In a study of 4,056 CKD patients, those using ACEI/ARB experienced fewer major kidney issues and had a lower risk of cardiovascular death compared to non-users, particularly over a follow-up period of about 2.64 years.
  • The findings suggest that ACEI/ARB users have a slower decline in kidney function and face significantly reduced risks for serious renal outcomes and cardiovascular mortality compared to those not using these medications.

Due to its vascular nature, AML is prone to bleeding, and AML that bleeds typically belongs to the tuberous sclerosis complex.
