Renal angiomyolipoma (AML) is not only uncommon but often an accidental diagnosis, as it is frequently asymptomatic and affects females disproportionately. Although they may exhibit symptoms of tuberous sclerosis complex and lymphangioleiomyomatosis, the vast majority are sporadic. Due to its vascular nature, AML is prone to bleeding, and AML that bleeds typically belongs to the tuberous sclerosis complex.

Defensive Medicine in the Context of the Indian Health System.

Defensive medicine; although a recent concept, is slowly beginning to cement its place in the Indian health system. An interaction of multiple factors has paved way for this form of practice. Need for certainty of the diagnosis, lack of hierarchy in medical care, exponential growth of micro/super specializations and private/corporate health institutions, incentive-based practice, increasing incidences of violence against health personnel, rising trend of defamation suites against doctors, bad publicity by media, and interference by elected representatives have jeopardized the situation.

Cognitive Impairment in Strategic Infarct Dementia: A Report of Three Cases.

Strokes involving specific areas regulating cognition and behavioral functions constitute strategic infarct vascular dementia. We present three patients with acute behavioral changes and cognitive impairment following a strategic infarct. Case 1 is of a 59-year-old male, a known patient of diabetes mellitus under treatment, who presented with acute onset of memory deficit along with difficulty in recognizing faces, and left hemispatial neglect.

A Pre-experimental Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Program on Knowledge and Expressed Practices Regarding Selected Obstetrical Emergencies Among Staff Nurses in Selected Hospitals of Shimla District, Himachal Pradesh.

Background and objective Good health and well-being occupy the third position among 17 sustainable development goals designed by the United Nations. The key to reducing maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality is competent and skilled birth attendance. The objectives of this study were to assess and compare the pre-test and post-test knowledge and expressed practices regarding selected obstetrical emergencies among staff nurses; to develop and determine the effectiveness of planned teaching programs on selected obstetrical emergencies among staff nurses; and to find out the correlation between knowledge and expressed practices regarding selected obstetrical emergencies.

Dyspepsia with alarm symptoms in patients aged less than 60 years: Is upper gastrointestinal endoscopy justified in Indian scenario?

Background: Newer American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) guidelines do not suggest endoscopy to investigate alarm features for dyspepsia patients under the age of 60 to exclude upper gastrointestinal (GI) neoplasia. The validity of this recommendation has not been evaluated in our population. So, this study was conducted to assess the utility of upper GI endoscopy to investigate alarm features in dyspepsia patients less than 60 years of age to exclude upper GI neoplasia.

Acute Suppurative Thyroiditis (AST) With Thyroid Abscess: A Rare and Potentially Fatal Neck Infection.

Thyroid abscess, although rare, is a condition that usually occurs as a sequela of acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) which is an infection of the thyroid gland. The infrequent occurrence of thyroid abscess is due to the unique anatomical and physiological characteristics of the gland which renders it resistant to infections. Delay in diagnosis and treatment can have adverse outcomes and serious complications such as septicaemia, descending necrotising mediastinitis, extension into deep spaces of the neck, and tracheal or oesophageal perforation.
