Biaxial vasoactivity of porcine coronary artery.

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Indiana University-Perdue University Indianapolis, Indianapolis, IN 46202, USA.

The passive mechanical properties of blood vessel mainly stem from the interaction of collagen and elastin fibers, but vessel constriction is attributed to smooth muscle cell (SMC) contraction. Although the passive properties of coronary arteries have been well characterized, the active biaxial stress-strain relationship is not known. Here, we carry out biaxial (inflation and axial extension) mechanical tests in right coronary arteries that provide the active coronary stress-strain relationship in circumferential and axial directions.

Epileptic seizure detection using genetically programmed artificial features.

Center for Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, Indiana University-Perdue University, 410 W. 10th Street, Suite 5000, Indianapolis 46202, USA.

Patient-specific epilepsy seizure detectors were designed based on the genetic programming artificial features algorithm, a general-purpose, methodic algorithm comprised by a genetic programming module and a k-nearest neighbor classifier to create synthetic features. Artificial features are an extension to conventional features, characterized by being computer-coded and may not have a known physical meaning. In this paper, artificial features are constructed from the reconstructed state-space trajectories of the intracranial EEG signals intended to reveal patterns indicative of epileptic seizure onset.

Supported employment for people with severe mental illness is an evidence-based practice, based on converging findings from eight randomized controlled trials and three quasi-experimental studies. The critical ingredients of supported employment have been well described, and a fidelity scale differentiates supported employment programs from other types of vocational services. The effectiveness of supported employment appears to be generalizable across a broad range of client characteristics and community settings.
