Background: We explored associations between parental alcohol communication (PCA) and student drinking behavior and protective behavioral strategies (PBS) use.
Methods: College students in the United States, who had talked about alcohol with parents, ( = 251) completed an anonymous online survey in Fall 2021. Participants reported frequency of discussing 14 alcohol-related topics with parents, past 30-day drinking behaviors, and PBS use.

Background: As summarized in this article, the widespread implementation of modern school health education (SHE) could become one of the most effective means available to improve the well-being of people in the United States and in other nations. However, the development and evolution of SHE largely remains unorganized, underdeveloped, and neglected by health and education agencies, policymakers, and the public.
Methods: Essential to the development of any scientific discipline, scientists today use the word ontology to refer to efforts to organize knowledge in particular domains.

Sexual violence is common on US college campuses and can result in negative health and academic outcomes. Credit-bearing courses are a possible innovative intervention, but few have been studied, and little is known about enrolled students' experiences. Our institution, located in the Southern United States, developed a semester-long class as a curricular intervention after our institutional climate survey results showed high rates of sexual violence among undergraduate students.

Importance: Publishing study protocols might reduce research waste because of unclear methods or incomplete reporting; on the other hand, there might be few additional benefits of publishing protocols for registered trials that are never completed or published. No study has investigated the proportion of published protocols associated with published results.
Objective: To estimate the proportion of published trial protocols for which there are not associated published results.

Inflammation is an underlying problem for many disease states and has been implicated in iron deficiency (ID). This study aimed to determine whether iron status is improved by epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) through reducing inflammation. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed an iron-deficient diet for 2 weeks and then randomly divided into four groups ( 8 each): positive controls, negative controls, lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 0⋅5 mg/kg body weight), and LPS + EGCG (LPS plus 600 mg EGCG/kg diet) for 3 additional weeks.

The term prediabetes describes blood glucose levels above the normal range but below the threshold to diagnose type 2 diabetes. Several population health initiatives encourage a test and treat approach for prediabetes. In this approach, screening and identification of individuals with prediabetes should be followed by prompt referral to structured lifestyle modification programs or pharmacologic interventions that have been shown to prevent or delay the progression to type 2 diabetes in clinical trials.

Background: Community reintegration after SCI rehabilitation consists of readjustment not only to the home setting but also to the social and occupational spheres, which often require people to spend nights away from home. Because community reintegration contributes to life satisfaction after SCI, it is necessary to investigate how travel participation is related to occupational and social participation and life satisfaction. Additionally, better management of the long-term effects of SCI requires better understanding of the changes in participation and life satisfaction over time.

Background: People with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at high risk for social isolation because they face barriers to social participation owing to limitations in physical functioning, secondary health conditions, and environmental barriers. Research has shown that social isolation, an objective lack of contact with others, can lead to loneliness, mental health issues, and low life satisfaction. Leisure travel, which involves interactions with others, may have the potential to reduce social isolation.

Persistent neurodisability is a known complication in paediatric survivors of cerebral malaria and severe malarial anaemia. Tau, ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1, neurofilament-light chain, and glial fibrillary acidic protein have proven utility as biomarkers that predict adverse neurologic outcomes in adult and paediatric disorders. In paediatric severe malaria, elevated tau is associated with mortality and neurocognitive complications.

Exercise therapy is first-line treatment for intermittent claudication due to peripheral artery disease. We sought to synthesize the literature on sex differences in response to exercise therapy for the treatment of intermittent claudication due to peripheral artery disease. A scoping review was performed (1997 to 2023) using Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), Embase, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science.

The specialty referral process consists of primary care clinicians referring patients to specialty consultants. This care transition requires effective care coordination and health information exchange between care teams; however, breakdowns in workflow and information flow impede "closing the referral loop" and delay or prevent referrers from receiving the consultant's "visit notes," particularly in cross-institutional referrals. This study aimed to describe and map the referral process as it occurs in clinics and identify and characterize work system barriers affecting its performance.

Newborn metabolite perturbations may identify potential biomarkers or mechanisms underlying adverse, smoking-related childhood health outcomes. We assessed associations between third-trimester smoking and newborn metabolite concentrations using the Tennessee Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS, 2009-2019) as the discovery cohort and INSPIRE (2012-2014) as the replication cohort. Children were linked to newborn screening metabolic data (33 metabolites).

Background: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) comprise a variety of products designed to deliver nicotine, flavorings, and other substances. To date, multiple epidemiological and experimental studies have reported a variety of health issues associated with their use, including respiratory toxicity, exacerbation of respiratory conditions, and behavioral and physiological effects. While some of these effects appear to be sex- and/or gender-related, only a portion of the research has been conducted considering these variables.

Background: Studies from rural South Africa indicate that people living with HIV (PLHIV) may have better health outcomes than those without, potentially due to the frequent healthcare visits necessitated by infection. Here, we examined the association between HIV status and healthcare utilization, using diabetes as an illustrative comparator of another high-burden, healthcare-intensive disease.
Methods: Our exposure of interest was awareness of positive disease status for both HIV and diabetes.

Background: Recent studies have found that long-term changes in weight during adulthood are associated with a high risk of mortality. The objective of this study was to characterize body mass index (BMI) trajectories during adulthood and to examine the association between BMI trajectories and risk of death in the Japanese population.
Methods: The data were extracted from Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study-a population-based prospective cohort study in Japan with participants aged 40-69 years followed over 20 years.

Background: Research on health effects and potential harms of electronic cigarette (EC) use during pregnancy is limited. We sought to determine the risks of pregnancy EC use on pregnancy-related adverse birth outcomes and assess whether quitting ECs reduces the risks.
Methods: Women with singleton live births who participated in the US Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey study 2016-2020 were classified into four mutually exclusive groups, by their use of ECs and combustible cigarettes (CCs) during pregnancy: non-use, EC only use, CC only use, and dual use.

Objectives: We sought to assess and report harms that were observed but not disclosed previously in clinical trials of gabapentin.
Study Design And Setting: We reanalyzed individual participant data from six randomized parallel trials of gabapentin for neuropathic pain, and we conducted meta-analyses. Between 1996 and 2003, adult participants were assigned to gabapentin (600 mg-3,600 mg per day) or placebo for 7-14 weeks.
