Article Synopsis
  • Protein is the most thermogenic macronutrient, and a meta-analysis aimed to understand how varying amounts and types of protein affect diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) and total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).
  • Out of 3894 studies initially identified, 52 were included; results showed that higher protein meals led to significantly greater DIT and TDEE in short-term studies, primarily in participants of normal weight.
  • In long-term studies, higher protein diets increased TDEE and resting energy expenditure but did not show differences in DIT; types of protein did not affect energy metabolism.

Effect of a cash transfer intervention on memory decline and dementia probability in older adults in rural South Africa.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

October 2024

South African Medical Research Council/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt), School of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg 2193, South Africa.

Evidence on cash transfers as a population-level intervention to support healthy cognitive aging in low-income settings is sparse. We assessed the effect of a cash transfer intervention on cognitive aging outcomes in older South African adults. We leveraged the overlap in the sampling frames of a Phase 3 randomized cash transfer trial [HIV Prevention Trial Network (HPTN) 068, 2011-2015] and an aging cohort [Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community (HAALSI), 2014-2022] in rural Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) occurs when genetically identical blood cells expand, often influenced by genetic mutations linked to blood cancers; however, many cases happen without known driver mutations.
  • Researchers analyzed 51,399 genomes to study a specific type of CH (CH-LPMneg) without detectable leukemia-related mutations, developing a new method (GEM rate) to estimate mutation burden without paired samples.
  • Through their study, they identified seven genes linked to CH-LPMneg and found that alterations in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) behavior may drive this mutation burden, while a broader analysis revealed relationships between GEM and the expression of 404 genes.

Impact of the South African Child Support Grant on memory decline and dementia probability in rural and low-income mothers, 2014-2021.

Soc Sci Med

October 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington, Bloomington, IN, USA; MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt), School of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Introduction: Aging populations across sub-Saharan Africa are rapidly expanding, leading to an increase in the burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Cash transfer interventions are one plausible mechanism to combat ADRD at a population-level in low-income settings. We exploited exogenous variation in eligibility for South Africa's Child Support Grant (CSG) to estimate the longitudinal association between potential CSG benefit and cognitive trajectories in rural mothers with <10 children (n = 1090).
