Background: Predicting hemolysis numerically based on the power-law model using idealized coefficients obtained from simplified devices yields a large variability in hemolysis index predictions. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based Kriging surrogate modeling approach, developed by Craven et al. at the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), was applied to a Fontan cavopulmonary assist device (CPAD) to generate device-specific hemolysis power-law coefficients.

A Glucose Fraction Independent of Insulin Secretion: Implications for Type 1 Diabetes Progression in Autoantibody-Positive Cohorts.

We assessed whether there is an impactful glucose fraction independent of insulin secretion in autoantibody-positive individuals. Baseline 2-h oral glucose tolerance test data from the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention (TNPTP; = 6190) and Diabetes Prevention Trial-Type 1 (DPT-1; = 705) studies were used. Linear regression of area under the curve (AUC) glucose versus Index60 was performed to identify two fractions: dependent (dAUCGLU) or independent (iAUCGLU) of insulin secretion.

Post-synthetic modification of amine-functionalized permanently porous coordination cages.

This manuscript explores the post-synthetic modification (PSM) of amine-functionalized porous coordination cages, specifically focusing on the formation of imine bonds through reactions with aldehydes. Targeting various cage topologies, including zirconium-, magnesium-, and molybdenum-based structures, we demonstrate the tunability of cage solubility and porosity through selective functionalization where the proximity of amine groups on the parent cage impacts the extent of modification. The work highlights the reversible nature of imine formation, offering potential applications in solubility switching and mixed-metal solid synthesis.

Decreased racial disparities in sepsis mortality after an order set-driven initiative: An analysis of 8151 patients.

Background: Sepsis is a leading cause of hospital mortality and there is evidence that outcomes vary by patient demographics including race and gender. Our objectives were to determine whether the introduction of a standardized sepsis order set was associated with (1) changes in overall mortality or early antibiotic administration or (2) changes in outcome disparities based on race or gender.

Methods: Patients seen in the emergency department and admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis code of sepsis were identified and divided into a preintervention cohort seen during the 18 months prior to the initiation of a new sepsis order set and an intervention cohort seen during the 18 months after a quality initiative driven by introducing the order set.

Differences in motivation for biology learning: A measurement invariance testing and latent mean comparison approach.

Educational and psychological research often involves comparing motivation across groups. It is critical to ensure that observed differences in motivation are true variations by group, not due to measurement biases. With a diverse sample of undergraduate students (N = 2200), this study measured internal consistency and gathered validity evidence based on the internal structure of five motivation scales.

Long-Term Predictive Modelling of the Craniofacial Complex Using Machine Learning on 2D Cephalometric Radiographs.

Objective: This study aimed to predict long-term growth-related changes in skeletal and dental relationships within the craniofacial complex using machine learning (ML) models.

Materials And Methods: Cephalometric radiographs from 301 subjects, taken at pre-pubertal (T1, age 11) and post-pubertal stages (T2, age 18), were analysed. Three ML models-Lasso regression, Random Forest, and Support Vector Regression (SVR)-were trained on a subset of 240 subjects, while 61 subjects were used for testing.

Objective: Social connectedness is a modifiable lifestyle factor that delays age-related cognitive decline. Using cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experimental approaches, we examined whether theory of mind - inferring what others think or feel - is a potential mechanism underlying this relationship.

Methods: In Study 1, 305 community-dwelling older adults participating in two different, but related, studies completed comprehensive measures of general cognition, theory of mind, and personal social networks.

Consensus review and considerations on TMS to treat depression: A comprehensive update endorsed by the National Network of Depression Centers, the Clinical TMS Society, and the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology.

This article updates the prior 2018 consensus statement by the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC) on the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the treatment of depression, incorporating recent research and clinical developments. Publications on TMS and depression between September 2016 and April 2024 were identified using methods informed by PRISMA guidelines. The NNDC Neuromodulation Work Group met monthly between October 2022 and April 2024 to define important clinical topics and review pertinent literature.

Methods: TROPiCS-03 (NCT03964727) is a multicohort, open-label, phase 2 basket study in solid tumors, including ES-SCLC. Adults with ES-SCLC that progressed after one prior line of platinum-based chemotherapy and anti-programmed death-(ligand) 1 (PD-[L]1) therapy received SG 10 mg/kg on days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle.

Governance Considerations for Point-of-Care Ultrasound: a HIMSS-SIIM Enterprise Imaging Community Whitepaper in Collaboration with AIUM.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has emerged as a standard of care across a variety of healthcare settings due to its ability to provide critical clinical information and as well as procedural guidance to clinicians directly at the bedside. Implementation of enterprise imaging (EI) strategies is needed such that POCUS images can be appropriately captured, indexed, managed, stored, distributed, viewed, and analyzed. Because of its unique workflow and educational requirements, reliance on traditional order-based workflow solutions may be insufficient.

Refining breast cancer genetic risk and biology through multi-ancestry fine-mapping analyses of 192 risk regions.

Genome-wide association studies have identified approximately 200 genetic risk loci for breast cancer, but the causal variants and target genes are mostly unknown. We sought to fine-map all known breast cancer risk loci using genome-wide association study data from 172,737 female breast cancer cases and 242,009 controls of African, Asian and European ancestry. We identified 332 independent association signals for breast cancer risk, including 131 signals not reported previously, and for 50 of them, we narrowed the credible causal variants down to a single variant.

Effect of implant loading protocols and associated factors on the success rate of implant therapy: A retrospective clinical study.

Statement Of Problem: Although immediate implant loading has shown promising clinical results and high survival rates, an increased risk of implant failure and complications has been reported. Achieving consistently predictable outcomes with this approach remains a challenge, but evidence-based guidelines to assist in selecting suitable patients are lacking.

Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to investigate the success rate, survival rate, and complications of immediate implant loading compared with early and delayed loading.

Comparative analysis of injuries related to self-harm, assault, and intimate partner violence: insights from U.S. Emergency Departments (2005-2021).

Background: Emergency departments are on the front lines of non-fatal self-harm injury (SHI). This study identifies patterns in patients presenting to emergency departments with SHI compared with patients presenting with assault and intimate partner violence.

Methods: Using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System All Injury Program database, we analyzed SHI cases in the emergency department from 2005 to 2021 and examined demographic characteristics, injury mechanism and anatomic location, emergency department disposition and temporal patterns relative to cases involving assault and intimate partner violence.

When "loss-of-function" means proteostasis burden: Thinking again about coding DNA variants.

Each human genome has approximately 5 million DNA variants. Even for complete loss-of-function variants causing inherited, monogenic diseases, current understanding based on gene-specific molecular function does not adequately predict variability observed between people with identical mutations or fluctuating disease trajectories. We present a parallel paradigm for loss-of-function variants based on broader consequences to the cell when aberrant polypeptide chains of amino acids are translated from mutant RNA to generate mutated proteins.

Systematic functional characterization of non-coding regulatory SNPs associated with central obesity.

Central obesity is associated with higher risk of developing a wide range of diseases independent of overall obesity. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified more than 300 susceptibility loci associated with central obesity. However, the functional understanding of these loci is limited by the fact that most loci are in non-coding regions.
