The lifetime effects of repetitive head impacts have captured considerable public and scientific interest over the past decade, yet a knowledge gap persists in our understanding of midlife neurological well-being, particularly in amateur level athletes. This study aimed to identify the effects of lifetime exposure to sports-related head impacts on brain morphology in retired, amateur athletes. This cross-sectional study comprised of 37 former amateur contact sports athletes and 21 age- and sex-matched noncontact athletes.

Inflammation is an important factor in Alzheimer's disease (AD). An NMR measurement in plasma, glycoprotein acetyls (GlycA), captures the overall level of protein production and glycosylation implicated in systemic inflammation. With its additional advantage of reducing biological variability, GlycA might be useful in monitoring the relationship between peripheral inflammation and brain changes relevant to AD.

Parkinson's Foundation, NewYork, NY 10018, USA.
Variants in seven genes (LRRK2, GBA1, PRKN, SNCA, PINK1, PARK7 and VPS35) have been formally adjudicated as causal contributors to Parkinson's disease; however, individuals with Parkinson's disease are often unaware of their genetic status since clinical testing is infrequently offered. As a result, genetic information is not incorporated into clinical care, and variant-targeted precision medicine trials struggle to enrol people with Parkinson's disease. Understanding the yield of genetic testing using an established gene panel in a large, geographically diverse North American population would help patients, clinicians, clinical researchers, laboratories and insurers better understand the importance of genetics in approaching Parkinson's disease.

Background: Pes cavovarus has an estimated incidence of 8%-17% in patients with spina bifida (SB). The majority of the current literature on surgical treatment of cavovarus feet in children and adolescents includes a variety of diagnoses. There are currently no case series describing a treatment algorithm for deformity correction in this specific patient population.

Sickle cell lung disease presents a challenging care paradigm involving acute and chronic lower airway disease, sleep-disordered breathing, pulmonary vascular disease, and modification by environmental factors. Understanding the presentation, pathophysiology, and diagnostic approaches is essential for accurate identification and management. While significant progress has been made, there remains a need for research to develop effective treatments and interventions to decrease disease burden in these children.

Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the specific destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas by the immune system, including CD4 cells which orchestrate the attack and CD8 cells which directly destroy the beta cells, resulting in the loss of glucose homeostasis.
Scope Of Review: This comprehensive document delves into the complex interplay between the immune system and beta cells, aiming to shed light on the mechanisms driving their destruction in T1D. Insights into the genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and autoimmune responses provide a foundation for understanding the autoimmune attack on beta cells.

Social anhedonia is a hallmark symptom of schizophrenia. Discrepancies in anticipated versus consummatory pleasure for non-social stimuli are well-documented. Thus, a similar emotional paradox may underlie social anhedonia.

Motivation: Software is vital for the advancement of biology and medicine. Impact evaluations of scientific software have primarily emphasized traditional citation metrics of associated papers, despite these metrics inadequately capturing the dynamic picture of impact and despite challenges with improper citation.
Results: To understand how software developers evaluate their tools, we conducted a survey of participants in the Informatics Technology for Cancer Research (ITCR) program funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Food allergy (FA) is estimated to impact up to 10% of the population and is a growing health concern. FA results from a failure in the mucosal immune system to establish or maintain immunological tolerance to innocuous dietary antigens, IgE production, and the release of histamine and other mediators upon exposure to a food allergen. Of the different FAs, peanut allergy has the highest incidence of severe allergic responses, including systemic anaphylaxis.

: To investigate macular vascular biomarkers for the detection of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). : A total of 56 POAG patients and 94 non-glaucomatous controls underwent optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) assessment of macular vessel density (VD) in the superficial (SCP), and deep (DCP) capillary plexus, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, perimeter, VD, choriocapillaris and outer retina flow area. POAG patients were classified for severity based on the Glaucoma Staging System 2 of Brusini.

The factors associated with unplanned higher-level re-amputation (UHRA) and one-year mortality among patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) after lower extremity amputation are poorly understood. This was a single-center retrospective study of patients who underwent amputations for CLTI between 2014 and 2017. Unadjusted bivariate analyses and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) from logistic regression models were used to assess associations between pre-amputation risk factors and outcomes (UHRA and one-year mortality).

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in profiling multiomic modalities within individual cells simultaneously. One such example is integrating combined single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data and single-cell transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing (scATAC-seq) data. Integrated analysis of diverse modalities has helped researchers make more accurate predictions and gain a more comprehensive understanding than with single-modality analysis.

Group-based Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERITg) is the group application of Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT), an evidence-based, integrative, recovery-oriented intervention to enhance insight and understanding of oneself and others in individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). MERITg may offer therapeutic interactions between participants that uniquely support recovery. The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between MERITg participation and recovery-oriented beliefs.

Mammalian cardiomyocytes have limited regenerative ability. Cardiac disease, such as congenital heart disease and myocardial infarction, causes an initial loss of cardiomyocytes through regulated cell death (RCD). Understanding the mechanisms that govern RCD in the injured myocardium is crucial for developing therapeutics to promote heart regeneration.

Short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) is a common paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) measure used to assess primary motor cortex (M1) interneuron activity in healthy populations and in neurological disorders. Many of the parameters of TMS stimulation to most accurately measure SICI have been determined. However, one TMS parameter that has not been investigated is the time between SICI trials (termed inter-trial interval; ITI).

Light is a key factor influencing the welfare of laboratory rodents, but little is known about their optimal lighting condition. It i common knowledge that rats prefer dim light, so bright light is mitigated with red-tinted shelters or cages, which alter both the color and intensity of light. Because both aspects are altered, the contribution of each feature to rodent preference is unknown.
