Background Burn injuries pose a significant global public health challenge, causing substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Timely and effective wound coverage is critical in treating severe burns to prevent infection, reduce pain, and promote healing. Cadaveric skin grafts (allografts) have become essential in treating extensive burn wounds, serving as temporary biological dressings to prepare the wound bed for autografting.

Management of a severely damaged extremity poses a dilemma-whether to perform a primary amputation or attempt limb salvage. A multitude of factors-such as the extent of neurovascular injury, limb ischaemia time, severity of bone and soft tissue loss, physiological reserve of the patient and availability of surgical expertise and resources-influence this decision. The Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) was developed as a predictor of the need for limb amputation, and a MESS of 7 or more is considered a predictor of primary amputation.

Background: Access to intra-arterial chemotherapy for retinoblastoma in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is limited. There is a need to optimize the efficacy of systemic chemotherapy for advanced intraocular retinoblastoma, particularly in LMICs. The aim was to compare the efficacy of standard versus higher dose carboplatin-based intravenous chemotherapy for group D and E retinoblastoma.

Background: One of the symptoms annoying patients after total knee replacement (TKR) is numbness around the operative scar. Some studies have shown that altering the incision in terms of placement or length may decrease the incidence of numbness. It still remains unknown whether numbness affects patient-reported outcomes.

Background: With a quest to optimize outcomes, there have been significant advancements in modern designs of total knee implants, attempting to mimic the natural knee motion and feel. One such new design reproducing the medial and lateral knee pivot is a dual-pivot (DP) knee. In the present study, we endeavored to compare the performance of the DP knee vis-a-vis an ultracongruent (UC) Knee design.

The present study aimed to compare the clinical effects of image-guided versus blind steroid injection to treat shoulder pain, which is always debatable. An electronic search of credible databases was conducted for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing image-guided versus blind steroid injections. The continuous data were pooled as mean difference (MD) or standardized mean difference (SMD), and dichotomous data were grouped as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI).

Background: The process of radiotherapy treatment planning and delivery involves multiple steps and professionals causing it to be prone to errors. Radiotherapy centers equipped with old telecobalt machines have certain peculiar challenges to workflow. We designed and tested a checklist for radiotherapy technicians (RTTs) to reduce chances of error during treatment delivery on a telecobalt machine.

Introduction: Osteosynthesis by plate fixation of humeral shaft fractures as a gold standard for fracture fixation has been proven beyond doubt. However, during conventional anterolateral plating Radial nerve injury may occur which can be avoided by applying plate on the medial flat surface. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of application of plate on the flat medial surface of humerus rather than the conventional anterolateral surface.

Differential optical density of fluid in capsular bag distension syndrome.

J Cataract Refract Surg

December 2020

From the Department of Ophthalmology, Institute of Naval Medicine, Indian Naval Hospital Ship Asvini, Near RC Church Colaba Mumbai, India.

Capsular bag distension syndrome (CBDS) is a rare complication of cataract surgery due to collection of fluid behind the intraocular lens (IOL). Nd:Yag laser capsulotomy is commonly performed to release the fluid collection; however, the potential risk of infection and inflammation has led to adaptation of numerous surgical procedures. Clinical examination in an established case of CBDS reveals opalescent fluid behind the IOL with ballooning of the posterior capsule, which has different reflectivity on optical coherence tomography.

Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare disease characterised by calcific deposits in lung parenchyma. PAM being a progressive disease with dissociation between severity of clinical symptoms and radiological picture, it is often detected incidentally. Mutations in the SLC34A2 gene encoding the type IIb sodium phosphate cotransporter in alveolar type II cells are considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of PAM.
