Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed bioavailable iron (BAI) levels in respirable coal dust from Central India to help prevent health issues in coal workers, specifically coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP).
  • BAI concentrations ranged from 275 to 9065 mg kg-1, with significant cytotoxic effects observed in lung cell lines, showing that higher BAI levels lead to increased toxicity and inflammation.
  • Findings suggest that even low levels of BAI in coal can trigger inflammatory responses and cytotoxicity, highlighting the need for safety standards regarding coal dust exposure in mining operations.

Electronic address:

The Rice-Vannucci model in rodent pups is subject to substantial loss of animals, result inconsistency, and high lab-to-lab variability in extent and composition of induced injury. This protocol allows for highly predictable and reproducible hypoxic-ischemic cerebral injury lesions in post-natal day 10 Wistar rat pups with no mortality. We describe steps for common carotid artery ligation, brief post-operative normothermia, exposure to hypoxia, and post-hypoxic normothermia.

The retinoic acid-related orphan receptor alpha (RORα) protein first came into the limelight due to a set of staggerer mice, discovered at the Jackson Laboratories in the United States of America by Sidman, Lane, and Dickie (1962) and genetically deciphered by Hamilton et al. in 1996. These staggerer mice exhibited cerebellar defects, an ataxic gait, a stagger along with several other developmental abnormalities, compensatory mechanisms, and, most importantly, a deletion of 160 kilobases (kb), encompassing the ligand binding domain (LBD).

To understand the physical phenomena responsible for radiation damage of the materials used in nuclear reactors, and thus study their operation life and/or efficiency, it is required to simulate the conditions by exposing the materials to energetic ions. Ceria (CeO) has been proposed as one of the inert matrices for the transmutation of minor actinides in the futuristic inert matrix fuel (IMF) concept. The inert matrix should also contain burnable poison to compensate for the initial reactivity of fuel.

Fluctuations in the number of regulatory molecules and differences in timings of molecular events can generate variation in gene expression among genetically identical cells in the same environmental condition. This variation, termed as expression noise, can create differences in metabolic state and cellular functions, leading to phenotypic heterogeneity. Expression noise and phenotypic heterogeneity have been recognized as important contributors to intra-tumor heterogeneity, and have been associated with cancer growth, progression, and therapy resistance.

Fine particulate matter (PM) is a significant air pollutant that drives the most chronic health problems and premature mortality in big metropolitans such as Delhi. In such a context, accurate prediction of PM concentration is critical for raising public awareness, allowing sensitive populations to plan ahead, and providing governments with information for public health alerts. This study applies a novel hybridization of extreme learning machine (ELM) with a snake optimization algorithm called the ELM-SO model to forecast PM concentrations.

As a non-linear phenomenon that varies along with agro-climatic conditions alongside many other factors, Evapotranspiration (ET) process represents a complexity when be assessed especially if there is a data scarcity in the weather data. However, even under such a data scarcity, the accurate estimates of ET values remain necessary for precise irrigation. So, the present study aims to: i) evaluate the performance of six hybrid machine learning (ML) models in estimating the monthly actual ET values under different agro-climatic conditions in China for seven provinces (Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, and Henan), and ii) select the best-developed model based on statistical metrics and reduce errors between predicted and actual ET (AET) values.

In spite of achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE), organo-halide perovskites suffer from long term stability issues. Especially the grain boundaries of polycrystalline perovskite films are considered as giant trapping sites for photo-generated carriers and therefore play an important role in charge transportation dynamics. Surface engineering grain boundary modification is the most promising way to resolve this issue.

The ambient stability, hysteresis, and trap states in organo-halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are correlated to the influence of interlayer interfaces and grain boundaries. Astute incorporation of CuZnSnS (CZTS) and Au/CZTS core/shell nanocrystals (NCs) can realize the goal of simultaneously achieving better performance and ambient stability of the PSCs. With optimized Au/CZTS NC size and concentration in the photoactive layer, power conversion efficiency can be increased up to 19.
