Diversity in HIV epidemic transitions in India: An application of HIV epidemiological metrices and benchmarks.

Background: The Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) has emphasized on the incidence-prevalence ratio (IPR) and incidence-mortality ratio (IMR) to measure the progress in HIV epidemic control. In this paper, we describe the status of epidemic control in India and in various states in terms of UNAIDS's recommended metrices.

Method: The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) of India spearheads work on mathematical modelling to estimate HIV burden based on periodically conducted sentinel surveillance for providing guidance to program implementation and policymaking.

Background: Metformin, by reducing intracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth, can be considered an adjunctive therapy to anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT). We determined whether metformin with standard ATT reduces time to sputum culture conversion and tissue inflammation in adults with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB).

Methods: In a randomized, 8-week, clinical trial, newly diagnosed, culture-positive PTB patients were randomized to standard ATT (HREZ = control arm) or standard ATT plus daily 1000 mg metformin (MET-HREZ = Metformin with Rifampicin [METRIF] arm) for 8 weeks during 2018-2020 at 5 sites in India.

TGF-β has been shown to play a differential role in either restricting or aiding HIV infection in different cell types, however its role in the cervical cells is hitherto undefined. Among females, more than 80% of infections occur through heterosexual contact where cervicovaginal mucosa plays a critical role, however the early events during the establishment of infection at female genital mucosa are poorly understood. We earlier showed that increased TGF-β level has been associated with cervical viral shedding in the HIV infected women, however a causal relationship could not be examined.

Precise monitoring of the enzyme activity by a suitable modulator is one of the very fundamental aspects of drug designing that provides the opportunity to overcome the challenges of several diseases. Herein, inhibition of human Topoisomerase IIα enzyme which serves as a potential target site for several anti-cancer drugs is demonstrated by using ultra-small size gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) with the dimension comparable with size of the active site of the enzyme. Molecular dynamics simulation results demonstrate that the Au NCs strongly interact with the human Topo IIα enzyme at its active site or allosteric site depending on forms of enzyme.

Maternal mental health and well-being is a public health priority and the evidence about the impact of COVID-19 on mental health status of pregnant women is gradually emerging. The findings of the recently published studies suggest that increased risk perception about contracting COVID-19, reduced social support, increase in domestic violence, disruption of antenatal care, and economic consequences of COVID-19 mitigation strategies can lead to adverse mental health outcomes in antenatal period.

The integrated counseling and testing center (ICTC) located in the district hospital, Unnao in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), India witnessed an increased detection of HIV among its attendees in July 2017. Subsequently, health camps were organized by the UP State AIDS Control Society in the villages and townships contributing to such detection. We conducted a case-control study to identify factors associated with this increased detection; 33 cases and 125 controls were enrolled.
