Iron and zinc malnutrition is a global humanitarian concern that mostly affects newborns, children, and women in low- and middle-income countries where plant-based diets are regularly consumed. This kind of malnutrition has the potential to result in a number of immediate and long-term implications, including stunted growth, an elevated risk of infectious diseases, and poor development, all of which may ultimately cause children to not develop to the fullest extent possible. A determination of the contributions from genotype, environment, and genotype by environment interactions is necessary for the production of nutrient-dense lentil varieties that offer greater availability of iron and zinc with a high level of trait stability.

Due to global warming, increasing incidences of higher-than-normal temperatures have been observed, which adversely affect seed germination, crop growth, and productivity. Several reports are available on the effect of inoculation with rhizobacteria on plant growth and biochemical attributes; however, information on their influence on seed germination and plant stress levels is lacking. In the present study, under heat stress, we studied the effect of three thermotolerant rhizobacterial strains on mustard seed germination, seedling vigor, and plant growth.

Unpredictable weather vagaries in the Asian tropics often increase the risk of a series of abiotic stresses in maize-growing areas, hindering the efforts to reach the projected demands. Breeding climate-resilient maize hybrids with a cross-tolerance to drought and waterlogging is necessary yet challenging because of the presence of genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) and the lack of an efficient multi-trait-based selection technique. The present study aimed at estimating the variance components, genetic parameters, inter-trait relations, and expected selection gains (SGs) across the soil moisture regimes through genotype selection obtained based on the novel multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI) for a set of 75 tropical pre-released maize hybrids.

Small RNA sequencing (sRNA-seq) and degradome analysis were used for the identification of miRNAs and their target host genes in a pair of near-isogenic lines (NILs), which differed for the presence of leaf rust resistance gene Lr28. The study led to identification of (i) 506 known and 346 novel miRNAs; and (ii) 5054 target genes including 4557 in silico predicted and 497 degradome-based genes using 105 differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs. A subset of 128 targets (67 in silico + 61 degradome-based) was differentially expressed in RNA-seq data that was generated by us earlier using the same pair of NILs; among these 128 targets, 58 target genes exhibited an inverse relationship with the DE miRNAs (expression of miRNAs and activation/suppression of target genes).

Identifying potential molecular tags for drought tolerance is essential for achieving higher crop productivity under drought stress. We employed an integrated genomics-assisted breeding and functional genomics strategy involving association mapping, fine mapping, map-based cloning, molecular haplotyping and transcript profiling in the introgression lines (ILs)- and near isogenic lines (NILs)-based association panel and mapping population of chickpea (Cicer arietinum). This combinatorial approach delineated a bHLH (basic helix-loop-helix) transcription factor, CabHLH10 (Cicer arietinum bHLH10) underlying a major QTL, along with its derived natural alleles/haplotypes governing yield traits under drought stress in chickpea.

Seeds harbor naturally occurring microbial endophytes that proliferate during seedling development; playing crucial roles in seedling growth, establishment, and protection against fungal pathogens. Resilient actinobacteria of wheat seeds have been explored in this study for their beneficial traits. Ten actinobacteria isolated from the surface-sterilized seeds of wheat variety HD3117 were identified as nine species of Streptomyces and one of Nocardiopsis.

The epigallocatechin-rich polyphenolic fraction of Assam variety white tea, traditionally used for the management of diverse inflammatory ailments and health drink, was investigated through eco-friendly green aqueous extraction, TLC, and HPLC characterization, phytochemical screening, in vitro DPPH assay, anti-proteinase, MTT assay on synovial fibroblast and colon cancer cells, apoptotic FACS analysis, cytokine ELISA, p-STAT3 western blotting, and in silico docking analysis. HPLC-TLC standardized white tea fraction (WT-F) rendered higher extractive-yield (21%, w/w), than green tea fraction(GT-F) (12%, w/w). WT-F containing flavonoids and non-hydrolysable polyphenols showed better antioxidant activity, rather than equivalent GT-F.
