Article Synopsis
  • * Impetigo is frequently seen in children and can be treated with topical antibiotics; however, oral antibiotics may be warranted in cases of outbreaks or multiple lesions.
  • * For abscess-related issues like furuncles and carbuncles, management typically involves incision and drainage, with oral antibiotics reserved for severe cases or immunocompromised patients; methicillin-resistant coverage may be needed if treatments fail.

Diagn Microbiol Infect Dis

September 2024

Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, Tungs' Taichung Metro Harbor Hospital, Taichung City, Taiwan, R.O.C. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Eczema herpeticum is a serious skin condition caused by the herpes simplex virus, commonly affecting those with weakened immune systems or skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, leading to painful lesions and potential severe complications without proper treatment.
  • A case study highlighted a young patient with ankylosing spondylitis, who improved after receiving antiviral and antibiotic treatment, despite not being on immunosuppressive therapy or having a history of related conditions.
  • The rise in eczema herpeticum cases is linked to more people with compromised immune systems due to factors like increased HIV/AIDS prevalence, more immunosuppressive treatments, and a rise in atopic dermatitis cases, which can complicate diagnosis due to overlapping symptoms with other conditions like Stevens-John

Background: Cytological detection of acantholytic keratinocytes (acantholytic cells [AC]) helps to identify canine pemphigus foliaceus (cPF) yet AC also occurs in superficial pyoderma (SP), the main differential diagnosis.

Hypothesis/objectives: To compare selected cytomorphological features of cPF and SP and to establish cytological diagnostic criteria that could differentiate cPF from SP.

Animals: 40 and 51 client-owned dogs with PF and SP, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the prevalence and risk factors of scabies and impetigo in the Nata and Sowa areas of the Tutume district, noting a significant lack of previous epidemiological data, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • A cross-sectional study revealed an overall scabies prevalence of 18.18%, with the highest rates in the communities of Manxhotae and Ndutshaa, while impetigo cases were rare.
  • Key risk factors identified include younger age groups (0-4 years and 5-18 years) and having a household member with itching, indicating a need for more research on household transmission dynamics.

Dermatologic Care for Refugees: Effective Management of Scabies and Pediculosis.

Cutis

April 2024

Alexis G. Strahan is from the Mercer University School of Medicine, Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Elston is from the Department of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston.

There is a large burden of treatable dermatologic conditions in refugee populations. Parasitic infestations are particularly common when there are barriers to basic hygiene, crowded living or travel conditions, and lack of access to health care. Body lice are associated with anemia and can transmit a variety of diseases; chronic impetigo secondary to scabies is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease globally.

Article Synopsis
  • Impetigo herpetiformis (IH) is a rare and severe skin condition linked to pregnancy complications, primarily caused by a genetic defect in the IL36RN gene.
  • This case series of six Chinese patients with IH during eight pregnancies explored the use of various biologics, like adalimumab, etanercept, and secukinumab, to manage their condition.
  • Most patients had successful pregnancies, but one experienced fetal heart rate issues that improved after changing medications, indicating that biologics may be beneficial for treating IH in those with the genetic defect.

Article Synopsis
  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) leads to skin irritation and can increase the risk of infections, especially in those affected by the condition.
  • Eczema herpeticum (EH) is a serious herpes simplex infection that appears as vesicles and erosions in areas already affected by AD, and misdiagnosing it can have severe consequences.
  • Prompt identification and treatment with acyclovir are essential to prevent serious complications, as illustrated by a case involving a 19-year-old male with AD presenting a similar rash.

Introduction: Group A streptococcus (GAS) infections, such as pharyngitis and impetigo, can lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations experience high rates of RHD and GAS skin infection, yet rates of GAS pharyngitis are unclear. Anecdotally, clinical presentations of pharyngitis, including tonsillar hypertrophy and sore throat, are uncommon.

Eliminate all risks: A call to reexamine the link between canine scabies and rheumatic heart disease.

PLoS Negl Trop Dis

May 2024

Australian Centre for Health Engagement, Evidence and Values, Faculty of the Arts, Social Sciences and the Humanities, University of Wollongong, Keiraville, New South Wales, Australia.

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and acute rheumatic fever (ARF) disproportionately affect individuals in low-resource settings. ARF is attributed to an immune response to Group A Streptococcus (GAS) following GAS pharyngitis and potentially GAS impetigo in which infection can be initiated by scabies infestation. The burden of ARF and RHD in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia is among the highest globally.

To formulate and optimize Ozenoxacin nano-emulsion using Quality by Design (QbD) concept by means of Box-Behnken Design (BBD) and converting it to a gel to form Ozenoxacin nano-emulgel followed by physico-chemical, in-vitro, ex-vivo and in-vivo evaluation. This study demonstrates the application of QbD methodology for the development and optimization of an effective topical nanoemulgel formulation for the treatment of Impetigo focusing on the selection of appropriate excipients, optimization of formulation and process variables, and characterization of critical quality attributes. BBD was used to study the effect of "% of oil, % of S and homogenization speed" on critical quality attributes "globule size and % entrapment efficiency" for the optimisation of Ozenoxacin Nano-emulsion.

Among genes present in all group A streptococci (GAS), those encoding M-fibril and T-pilus proteins display the highest levels of sequence diversity, giving rise to the two primary serological typing schemes historically used to define strain. A new genotyping scheme for the pilin adhesin and backbone genes is developed and, when combined with typing, provides an account of the global GAS strain population. Cluster analysis based on nucleotide sequence similarity assigns most T-serotypes to discrete pilin backbone sequence clusters, yet the established T-types correspond to only half the clusters.
