Surgical Oncology Research Center, Faculty of Medicine, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran; Department of General Surgery, Imam Reza Hospital, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Paraduodenal hernias (PDHs) are a type of internal hernia that occur due to congenital issues, accounting for about 53% of all internal hernias, with left and right types.
  • A 26-year-old man experienced sudden severe abdominal pain, and a CT scan indicated a small bowel obstruction linked to a PDH and potential bowel malrotation, leading to emergency surgery which resulted in no complications after four weeks.
  • PDHs arise from abnormal rotation of the midgut during embryonic development and can involve various organs; they should be considered in cases of unexplained abdominal pain or obstruction when no other causes are identified.

Recently, a growing focus has been on identifying critical mechanisms in neurological diseases that trigger a cascade of events, making it easier to target them effectively. One such mechanism is the inflammasome, an essential component of the immune response system that plays a crucial role in disease progression. The NLRP3 (nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeat, and pyrin domain containing 3) inflammasome is a subcellular multiprotein complex that is widely expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) and can be activated by a variety of external and internal stimuli.

Background: Follistatin-like proteins (FSTLs) are adipomyokines secreted by adipocytes and myocytes. Previous studies have reported an increase in circulating FSTL1 levels in response to cardiovascular injuries. In this study, we conducted a systematic review and metaanalysis to assess the association between circulating FSTLs and Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs).

Department of Psychology, Agri Ibrahim Cecen University, Ağrı, Turkey; Department of Social and Educational Sciences, Lebanese American University, Beirut, Lebanon. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers examined how perceived stigma, self-stigma related to COVID-19, and fear of the virus mediate the relationship between dissociative experiences and PTSD across different waves of the pandemic.
  • * Findings emphasize the critical need for mental health support and resources for healthcare workers to help them cope with the psychological impacts brought on by the pandemic.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, and is due to the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. It is multifactorial, caused by genetic and environmental factors and currently has no definitive cure. We have investigated the protective effects of parthenolide (PTN), a compound with known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, in an in vitro model of PD, that is induced by 6-OHDA, and that causes neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells.

Background: Given the evolving application and promising outcomes of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in various thromboembolic conditions, we aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of DOACs with warfarin in the post-acute treatment of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) using clinical and radiological parameters.

Methods: A total of 140 CVST patients were enrolled, with 95 receiving warfarin and 45 receiving DOACs as post-acute treatment. Clinical and imaging parameters of the patients in follow-up visits were investigated, including the last modified Rankin Scale (mRS), venous thromboembolic events, CVST recurrence, mortality rate, recanalization status, and hemorrhagic events, to compare the efficacy and safety of treatment between the two groups.

Key Clinical Message: Clinicians should consider spontaneous coronary artery dissection in middle-aged women presenting with acute coronary syndromes and a history of tamoxifen use, to ensure timely diagnosis, and appropriate management strategies.

Abstract: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is characterized by a non-iatrogenic, nontraumatic separation of the coronary artery wall, contributing to acute coronary syndromes (ACS), and sudden cardiac death. SCAD predominantly affects the left anterior descending artery (LAD) and is frequently observed in middle-aged women.

  • - Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) is a rare genetic disorder affecting infants, mainly identified in the first 6 months of life, with most cases linked to gene mutations that impact insulin production and beta-cell health.
  • - A study in Iran involving 135 patients diagnosed with diabetes before age 12 months revealed genetic abnormalities in 93 individuals, with a notable prevalence of consanguineous marriages and a significant familial history of diabetes.
  • - Researchers discovered 58 unique genetic variants in 14 genes related to NDM, with the highest occurrences in EIF2AK3, KCNJ11, and ABCC8, including 20 variants identified for the first time, enhancing understanding of NDM genetics in this population.

The formation of fibrotic bands in female reproductive system, including the uterus, after abdominal and pelvic surgeries, is an important medical challenge associated with many complications, including infertility and pain. Investigating the role of different molecules involved in fibrosis and adhesion formation may help in the development of new drugs to prevent this disorder. Lysyl oxidase-like 2 (LoxL2) is a copper-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the cross-linking of collagen and elastin fibers in the extracellular matrix (ECM) to stabilize ECM.
