Introduction: Intermittent fasting (IF) has been reported to be involved in ameliorating oxidative stress and lessening the systemic-low grade inflammation that predisposes to chronic diseases. Gene polymorphism is currently a main determining factor for the metabolic responses to different dietary and lifestyle modifications.

Methods: The current study was designed to explore the effect of observing four-week, dawn to dusk IF by participants with obesity on gene expression of the anti-inflammatory , oxidative stress, and bioenergetics enzymes (, , and ), as well as metabolic and cellular regulatory genes ( and ).

Background/objectives: Locating the mandibular foramen (MF) through imaging is clinically important for inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) anesthesia and mandibular ramus osteotomies. Although cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is superior in imaging the mandible, an orthopantomogram (OPG) is preferred for its ease of use and availability. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of digital OPG in localizing the MF, in a subset of the Middle Eastern population.

Different flavone extracts from apple peel and aldehydes from grape stems were investigated as restraints of the anodic aluminum dissolution procedure in 60% HPO:40% HSO. The potential-limiting current correlation for Al anode was assessed and associated with regularly improving apple peel and grape stems extract concentration (100 to 1000 ppm range). The limiting current reduces whereas retardation effectiveness (%) increases as the concentrations of apple peel and grape stems extract rise.

Article Synopsis
  • A national multicenter study in Saudi Arabia assessed the resistance profiles of a common pathogen causing healthcare-associated infections, using the gold standard broth microdilution method over 2022-2023.
  • The study collected 185 isolates from various infection sites, finding the highest susceptibility to amikacin (76.8%), while notable resistance was observed with meropenem (52%) and colistin (43.8%).
  • The findings revealed a significant level of multidrug-resistance among the isolates, highlighting the need for enhanced antimicrobial stewardship and infection control policies in hospitals to manage and track antibiotic resistance effectively.

Article Synopsis
  • - Glycemic variability (GV) has been identified as a significant predictor of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with type 2 diabetes, showing a particular correlation with fasting blood sugar variability (FBS-CV).
  • - In a study of 680 type 2 diabetes patients, MACE events were closely tied to FBS-CV levels, while diabetic microvascular complications (DMC) were more influenced by the duration of diabetes and glycemic control measures.
  • - The research indicated that patients on metformin and DPP-4 inhibitors had the lowest glycemic variability compared to those using insulin or sulfonylureas, suggesting that medication choice could play a role in cardiovascular risk management.

Black fungus, also known as mucormycosis, is one of the most serious infections affecting immunocompromised individuals. Invasive fungal sinusitis due to mucormycosis is quite rare globally. Hence, this article presents a case report of invasive fungal sinusitis in a 53-year-old diabetic female who presented to the emergency department with a severe case of diabetic ketoacidosis secondary to acute sinusitis, which was confirmed by histopathology to be mucormycosis.

Species-specific ecotoxicity of platinum nanoparticles to two cyanobacteria.

Mar Pollut Bull

December 2024

Department of Biology, College of Science, Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (IMSIU), P.O. Box 90950, Riyadh 11623, Saudi Arabia; Soil Microbiology Department, Soils, Water and Environment Research Institute, Agricultural Research Center, Giza, P.O. 175, El-Orman, Egypt. Electronic address:

Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) are one of the widely used NPs, which contribute to potential risks to the aquatic ecosystem. However, PtNPs toxicity in phytoplankton remains inadequately understood, with significant gaps in knowledge regarding their biochemical bases and species-specific responses. Herein, we investigated the impact of PtNPs on two cyanobacterial species (Anabaena laxa and Nostoc muscorum) to explore the harmful pathways triggered by PtNPs in cyanobacteria, which may help in selecting appropriate biomarkers for PtNPs pollution in aquatic environments.
