Honey bee venom has been established to have significant effect in immunotherapy. In the present study, (Z)-11-eicosenol-a major constituent of bee venom, along with its derivations methyl cis-11-eicosenoate and cis-11-eicosenoic acid, were synthesised to investigate their immune stimulatory effect and possible use as vaccine adjuvants. Stimuli that prime and activate the immune system have exerted profound effects on immune cells, particularly macrophages; however, the effectiveness of bee venom constituents as immune stimulants has not yet been established.

Previous research has shown that propolis has immunomodulatory activity. Propolis extracts from different geographic origins were assessed for their anti-inflammatory activities by investigating their ability to alter the production of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and the cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6 and IL-10 in THP-1-derived macrophage cells co-stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). All the propolis extracts suppressed the TNF-α and IL-6 LPS-stimulated levels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how decellularized tissue-engineered constructs impact cell differentiation in the lab and periodontal healing in live models.
  • The constructs, made by loading periodontal ligament cell (PDLC) sheets on polymer scaffolds, showed promising results; PDLCs increased bone marker gene expression, while mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exhibited enhanced collagen production but decreased stem cell marker over time.
  • In rat models, these constructs proved biocompatible and led to better tissue integration and regeneration compared to controls, indicating their potential for periodontal treatment.

Objectives: Decellularization aims to harness the regenerative properties of native extracellular matrix. The objective of this study was to evaluate different methods of decellularization of periodontal ligament cell sheets whilst maintaining their structural and biological integrity.

Design: Human periodontal ligament cell sheets were placed onto melt electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) membranes that reinforced the cell sheets during the various decellularization protocols.
