The relationships of the gut microbiota-inflammation-brain axis in depressive bipolar disorder (BD) remains under-elaborated. Sixty-five unmedicated depressive patients with BD II and 58 controls (HCs) were prospectively enrolled. Resting-state functional MRI data of static and dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) was measured, and abnormal ALFF masks were subsequently set as regions of interest to calculate whole-brain static functional connectivity (sFC) and dynamic functional connectivity (dFC).

Two Hundred Nanometer Thin Multifocal Graphene Oxide Metalens for Varying Magnification Broadband Imaging.

ACS Nano

December 2024

Nanophotonics Research Center, Institute of Microscale Optoelectronics and State Key Laboratory of Radio Frequency Heterogeneous, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen 518060, China.

Conventional microscopes, which rely on multiple objective lenses for varying magnifications, are bulky, complex, and costly, making them difficult to integrate into compact devices. They require frequent manual adjustments, complicating the imaging process and increasing maintenance burdens. This paper explores the potential of single ultrathin graphene metalens to address this issue.

Electronic address:

Background: While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains the gold standard for morphological imaging, its ability to differentiate between tumor tissue and treatment-induced changes on the cellular level is insufficient. Notably, glioma cells, particularly glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), demonstrate overexpression of chemokine receptor-4 (CXCR4). This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of non-invasive Ga-Cixafor™ PET/CT as a tool to improve diagnostic accuracy in patients with high-grade glioma.

The overall aim of the present study was to determine if exposure to three high volume plastic additives, including diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), bisphenol A (BPA) and benzotriazoles (BT), have the potential to promote adverse effects in Atlantic cod (G. morhua). Ex vivo precision cut - liver slices (PCLS) from six male juvenile Atlantic cod were exposed to four concentrations of mono-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (MEHP, the main metabolite of DEHP), BPA and BT both singly and in mixtures ranging from 0.

  • A new machine learning method, called SU-VAE, allows scientists to separate brain connectome data shared between humans and macaques from species-specific traits.
  • This method was validated by linking unique human features to cognitive abilities, while shared features aligned more with sensorimotor skills.
  • The results suggest that human-specific brain traits may make networks more efficient and are associated with certain genes related to axon guidance.

Electronic address:

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) MRI has become increasingly utilized for detecting dilute labile protons and characterizing microenvironment properties. However, the CEST MRI effect is only a few percent, and there is a need for a systematic approach to optimize scan parameters for sensitive and accurate CEST quantification. We propose multi-dimensional adjustments of key parameters such as the repetition time (TR) and RF duty cycle to optimize CEST MRI sensitivity per unit of time and utilization of quasi-steady-state (QUASS) reconstruction to recover the full CEST effect during postprocessing.

The behavior of an organism is influenced by the complex interplay between its brain, body and environment. Existing data-driven models focus on either the brain or the body-environment. Here we present BAAIWorm, an integrative data-driven model of Caenorhabditis elegans, which consists of two submodels: the brain model and the body-environment model.

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and HMGB1 (high mobility group box 1 protein) are key players in treatments that induce immunogenic cell death (ICD). However, conventional therapies, including radiotherapy, are often insufficient to induce ICD. In this study, we explore a strategy using nanoparticle-loaded macrophages as a source of ATP and HMGB1 to complement radiation-induced intrinsic and adaptive immune responses.

Advanced Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Research Center (ADIR), Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are a family of poorly differentiated malignant neoplasms of neuroectodermal origin. According to the location of origin, PNETs could be further categorized as central or peripheral. Peripheral PNET (pPNET) is an uncommon type that accounts for 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas and occurs outside the central and sympathetic nervous systems.

Background: Ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at a field strength of 7 Tesla (T) has marked a significant milestone in diagnostic imaging since it was approved for clinical use in 2017. Despite the potential to improve image analysis by advances in signal-to-noise ratio, and improved spatial resolution and metabolic imaging, the clinical implementation of 7-T MRI remains limited. Factors that contribute to this limited availability are the high price, the operating costs, the need for specifically educated personnel, and lack of evidence of clinical benefit.

Mitochondrial dynamics govern whole-body regeneration through stem cell pluripotency and mitonuclear balance.

Nat Commun

December 2024

Westlake Laboratory of Life Sciences and Biomedicine, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Tissue regeneration is a complex process involving large changes in cell proliferation, fate determination, and differentiation. Mitochondrial dynamics and metabolism play a crucial role in development and wound repair, but their function in large-scale regeneration remains poorly understood. Planarians offer an excellent model to investigate this process due to their remarkable regenerative abilities.

Fibrosis is one of the key healing responses to injury, especially within the heart where it helps to maintain structural integrity following acute insults such as myocardial infarction. However, if it becomes dysregulated then fibrosis can become maladaptive leading to adverse remodelling, impaired cardiac function and heart failure. Fibroblast activation protein is exclusively expressed by activated fibroblasts, the key effector cells of fibrogenesis, and has a unique extracellular domain that is an ideal ligand for novel molecular imaging probes.

Predicting the histopathology of residual retroperitoneal masses (RMMs) before post-chemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection in metastatic nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCTs) can guide individualized treatment and minimize complications. Previous single approach-based models perform poorly in validation. Herein, we introduce a machine learning model that evolves from a single-dimensional tumor diameter to incorporate high-dimensional radiomic features, with its effectiveness assessed using the macro-average area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs).

In obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), heart rate variability (HRV) decreases and performance in psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) worsens with more severe hypoxic load. Nevertheless, the association between HRV and PVT performance is poorly understood. Thus, we hypothesize that nocturnal short-term HRV is better related to daytime psychomotor vigilance compared to overnight HRV.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)-in-TAVR within index supra-annular transcatheter heart valves (THVs) and high-risk anatomy can compromise coronary perfusion and re-access.

Case Summary: An 80-year-old male presented with acute heart failure caused by degeneration of an Evolut R THV, leading to severe aortic regurgitation. Aortic computed tomography imaging revealed a high-risk anatomy characterized by the index THV's commissural plane being placed above the coronary ostia and a valve-to-aorta distance of less than 2 mm, resulting not eligible for redo-TAVR according to recent literature.
