The use of social media platforms in pathology and medical laboratory science has increased in recent years, revolutionizing the way professionals in these fields interact, disseminate information, and collaborate. To gain an understanding of the current landscape regarding social media use in pathology and medical laboratory science, a novel systematic review was conducted. A search of PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Scopus was performed to identify articles evaluating social media use within pathology and medical laboratory science.

Given recent trends in National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) data, there exists a looming deficit of practicing pathologists. As such, the Pathology Outreach Program (POP) was established in 2018 in the United States, and in 2022 in Canada, to educate high school students about pathology and laboratory medicine to help curb this projected shortage. We present survey data gathered from several educational sessions hosted at high schools in the United States (U.

We report an 85-year-old male patient with a medical history significant for psoriasis who presented with a thigh wound that expanded slowly over the course of 9 months. The patient was previously treated with amputation of hand digits for osteomyelitis. Histologic examination of the tissue sample revealed a broad ulceration with large areas of necrosis extending into the subcutis.

Article Synopsis
  • Systemic immunomodulatory agents are used to treat moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, but their use before surgery may raise the risk of infections and complications.
  • The study aimed to assess the risk of surgical site infections (SSI) in patients with autoimmune diseases who are on various immunomodulatory drugs and undergoing surgery.
  • Findings suggest that for low-risk surgeries, many immunomodulatory treatments, such as TNF-α inhibitors and methotrexate, can be safely continued, while for more complex surgeries, a careful evaluation is recommended before continuing their use.

Article Synopsis
  • Psoriatic patients receiving vaccines need clear guidelines on whether to pause or maintain their systemic medications, especially for live and nonlive vaccines.
  • The National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board and experts developed 22 consensus statements recommending that most patients can continue oral and biologic therapies for nonlive vaccines, but should consider stopping methotrexate.
  • For live vaccines, most therapies should be interrupted before and after vaccination, except for abatacept, and timing adjustments for vaccine administration are crucial.

Introduction: Patients with psoriasis report pruritus as their most bothersome symptom. Tapinarof cream 1% once daily demonstrated significant efficacy versus vehicle and was well tolerated in adults with mild to severe plaque psoriasis in two 12-week trials: PSOARING 1 (NCT03956355) and PSOARING 2 (NCT03983980). Here, we present patient-reported pruritus outcomes from these trials.

Effects of TP63 mutations on keratinocyte adhesion and migration.

Exp Dermatol

September 2023

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, USA.

The goal of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for the formation of skin erosions in patients affected by Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-cleft lip/palate syndrome (AEC). This ectodermal dysplasia is caused by mutations in the TP63 gene, which encodes several transcription factors that control epidermal development and homeostasis. We generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) from AEC patients and corrected the TP63 mutations using genome editing tools.

Postoperative recovery is an important consideration for patients planning dermal rejuvenation procedures. A topical procedure enhancement system (PES) containing a tripeptide and hexapeptide (TriHex Technology; Alastin Skincare, Carlsbad, CA) hastens recovery from facial rejuvenation procedures, such as laser resurfacing. We assessed the efficacy and tolerability of the PES compared to a standard-of-care antioxidant regimen for improving recovery following three monthly facial radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatments.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: Contribution of Routine Histopathology in Unexpected Encounters.

Am J Surg Pathol

February 2019

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, NorthShore University HealthSystem, Evanston Hospital, Evanston.

The ulcerated papules of cutaneous leishmaniasis represent an unusual form of granulomatous dermatitis caused by Leishmania species, a protozoan transmitted by sandfly bites. As the disease is not native to North America, clinical suspicion is partially based on a compatible travel history and may result in a biopsy. The key role of standard morphology is the identification of Leishmania organisms, supplemented by Giemsa and/or CD1a immunostaining.
