Social Determinants, Mental Well-Being, and Disrupted Life Transitions Among Young Adults with Disabling Mental Health Conditions.

This study sought to understand how young adults (age 18-25) with histories of mental health disorders are coping with disrupted transitions to adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional web survey was conducted in March-June 2021 of 967 US young adults with pre-pandemic psychiatric disability to assess their current psychiatric status, interrupted transitions, and associations with social determinants including income, community participation, and social context. Mental health was assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version.

Objective: Accumulation of hydrophobic bile acids is linked with cancer development. However, derivatives of deoxycholic acid (DCA) and lithocholic acid (LCA) produced via bacterial metabolism may mitigate the proinflammatory and cytotoxic effects of hydrophobic bile acids. The impact of diet on secondary bile acid (BA) derivative production has not been determined.

Preparation, Modification, Quantitation, and Dentin Biomodification Activity of Selectively Enriched Proanthocyanidins.

To date, quantitative analysis of proanthocyanidin (PAC) containing materials including plant extracts and fractions depends on colorimetric assays or phloroglucinolysis/thiolysis combined with UV-HPLC analysis. Such assays are of limited accuracy, particularly lack specificity, require extensive sample preparation and degradation, and need appropriate physical reference standards. To address this analytical challenge and toward our broader goal of developing new plant-sourced biomaterials that chemically and mechanically modulate the properties of dental tissue for clinical interventions, we have characterized 12 different PAC DESIGNER (Depletion and Enrichment of Select Ingredients Generating Normalized Extract Resources) materials.

Coats disease presenting with vitreous hemorrhage and neovascular glaucoma.

Purpose: To describe a patient with Coats disease with an atypical presentation of neovascular glaucoma and vitreous hemorrhage.

Observations: A 15-year-old male presented with five days of pain, redness, and swelling and was found to have neovascular glaucoma in his right eye. Further evaluation revealed Coats disease stage 3AI with a subtotal exudative retinal detachment inferiorly, telangiectatic vessels, and vitreous hemorrhage.

Predictors of outcome in patients with presumed reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS).

Introduction: Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is thought to be benign by nature, but a proportion of patients still suffer from neurological deficits on follow-up.

Objective: To understand what factors may influence a patient's recovery from RCVS.

Methods: The Clinical Research Data Warehouse at this institution was employed to search the medical records for patients with diagnosis and treatment of RCVS (2010-2021).

DNA-binding affinity and specificity determine the phenotypic diversity in BCL11B-related disorders.

BCL11B is a Cys2-His2 zinc-finger (C2H2-ZnF) domain-containing, DNA-binding, transcription factor with established roles in the development of various organs and tissues, primarily the immune and nervous systems. BCL11B germline variants have been associated with a variety of developmental syndromes. However, genotype-phenotype correlations along with pathophysiologic mechanisms of selected variants mostly remain elusive.

Metals in sediment of the lower Great Lakes and region-wide discoveries.

Thirteen elements were measured in 76 surface grab sediment samples and 90 segments of four cores from Lakes Erie and Ontario. By combining the data obtained previously from Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron, the spatial distribution, temporal trends, major influencing factors, anthropogenic enrichments, categorization, and ecological risks of target metals in sediment were evaluated for the Great Lakes region. Regionwide, Lake Ontario had the highest median concentrations for Ag, As, Cd, Zn, and Pb, while the highest Cr concentration was found in the Western Basin of Lake Erie.

AMPK's role in tumor initiation and progression is controversial. Here, we provide genetic evidence that AMPK is required for metastasis in mouse models of breast cancer. In a mouse model of spontaneous breast cancer metastasis, the deletion of AMPK before and after tumor onset decreased breast cancer metastasis, and similar results were obtained after AMPK deletion in breast cancer cell lines.

Purpose: The prevalence of obesity, a crucial risk factor for breast cancer, is markedly higher among Hispanic women. The interaction between ethnic enclaves and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) as a determinant of this disparity warrants further research. We aimed to identify neighborhood profiles based on ethnic enclaves and socioeconomic status to evaluate the association with obesity among Hispanic women in the metropolitan Chicago region.

Accounting for air cleaner utilization and performance to improve interpretation of patient outcomes in real-world indoor air cleaner intervention trials.

There is an increasing number of randomized clinical trials intended to assess the effectiveness of indoor air cleaners for improving participant outcomes in real-world settings. In this communication, we synthesize the current state of registered air cleaner intervention trials and call attention to the critical importance of conducting measurements to characterize the performance and utilization of air cleaners in such trials to improve interpretation of exposure measurements and patient outcomes. We draw upon the existing literature and preliminary findings from our ongoing one-year, randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled case-control trial of stand-alone air filtration in the homes of U.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an aggressive disease with poor prognosis, necessitating preclinical models for evaluating novel therapies. Large-animal models are particularly valuable for assessing locoregional therapies, which are widely employed across HCC stages. This study aimed to develop a large-animal HCC model with tailored tumor mutations.

Global elimination of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) remains difficult without an effective vaccine. Since injection drug use is the leading cause of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission in Western Europe and North America, people who inject drugs (PWID) are an important population for testing HCV vaccine effectiveness in randomized-clinical trials (RCTs). Heparanase 2 Modulation Inhibits HSV-2 Replication by Regulating Heparan Sulfate.

The host enzyme heparanase (HPSE) facilitates the release of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) from target cells by cleaving the viral attachment receptor heparan sulfate (HS) from infected cell surfaces. HPSE 2, an isoform of HPSE, binds to but does not possess the enzymatic activity needed to cleave cell surface HS. Our study demonstrates that HSV-2 infection significantly elevates HPSE 2 protein levels, impacting two distinct stages of viral replication.

The Role of Phytochemicals in Managing Neuropathic Pain: How Much Progress Have We Made?

Neuropathic pain is a complex and debilitating condition resulting from nerve damage, characterized by sensations such as burning, tingling, and shooting pain. It is often associated with conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), and diabetic polyneuropathy. Conventional pain therapies frequently provide limited relief and are accompanied by significant side effects, emphasizing the need to explore alternative treatment options.

Project Initiate: A Clinical Feasibility Trial of Equitable Access to Early Neurodevelopmental Therapy.

Despite evidence of the effectiveness of early intervention (EI) programs, eligible infants often experience delays in initiation of services or fail to receive services entirely. Disparities have been documented, including lower enrollment rates for infants with public insurance. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of initiating home physical therapy (PT) services promptly after neonatal or cardiac intensive care unit (NICU/CICU) discharge for infants with public insurance and to assess early motor outcomes for children who received study therapy compared with a standard of care group.

Safety Concerns in Neurological Clinical Trials: A Challenge That the FDA Must Resolve.

Monoclonal antibodies approved by the FDA, lecanemab, donanemab, and aducanumab, are failing to meet the expected efficacy to treat early Alzheimer's disease, and aducanumab has been recalled. : Recently, it was reported that the clinical trials of these antibodies may have violated patient's rights and subjected them to high, likely lethal risk. The challenge with developing antibodies to treat neurological disorders is their poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration if the antibody must enter the brain, resulting in almost negligible brain bioavailability, requiring high dosing that can be toxic.

Preschool and Me: Educational-clinical linkage to improve health equity for children with developmental delays and disabilities from historically marginalized communities.

Societal and structural inequities have resulted in longstanding health care disparities among Black, Latino/a/e, and low-income preschool children with developmental delays and disabilities (PCw/DD), depriving them of educational and therapeutic services that improve future academic, economic, and health outcomes. To address this issue, we developed Preschool and Me (PreM), a community-clinical linkage (CCL) implemented within healthcare settings serving historically marginalized communities. This novel CCL, an educational-medical linkage model, aims to increase access to school-based services for PCw/DD.

Sources of HIV information and women's HIV knowledge in Southwest Sumba Indonesia: a cross-sectional study with mediation analysis.

Background: Despite multiple years of government HIV educational efforts, the growing trend of new cases among women in Indonesia runs parallel with their seemingly overall lack of comprehensive knowledge about HIV. A major prevention challenge for the Indonesian government lies in delivering HIV prevention education across the world's largest archipelago. This study investigates comprehensive HIV knowledge among reproductive-age women in Southwest Sumba, Indonesia, and the sources through which they report having learned about HIV along with potential mediators of the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and HIV knowledge.

Diabetic kidney disease is a leading cause of kidney failure worldwide and is easily detectable with screening examination. Diabetes causes hyperfiltration and activation of the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system by hemodynamic changes within the nephron, which perpetuates damaging physiology. Diagnosis is often clinical after detection of heavy proteinuria in a patient with diabetes,but can be confirmed by observation of histologic stages on kidney biopsy.
