Advancements in the development of fast-charging and long-lasting microstructured alloying anodes with high volumetric capacities are essential for enhancing the operational efficiency of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). These anodes, however, face challenges such as declined cyclability and rate capability, primarily due to mechanical degradation reduced by significant volumetric changes (over 252%) and slow kinetics of sodium-ion storage. Herein, we introduce a novel anode design featuring densely packed bismuth (Bi) embedded within highly conductive carbon microspheres to overcome the aforementioned challenges.

The photocatalytic efficiency of materials such as graphene and noble metal nanoclusters depends on their plasmon lifetimes. Plasmon dephasing and decay in these materials is thought to occur on ultrafast time scales, ranging from a few femtoseconds to hundreds of femtoseconds and longer. Here we focus on understanding the dephasing and decay pathways of excited states in small lithium and silver clusters and in plasmonic states of the π-conjugated molecule anthracene, providing insights that are crucial for interpreting optical properties and photophysics.

The use of photoacoustic brain imaging for hemorrhage detection holds significant clinical importance. This study focuses on the performance of sensitivity and detection capabilities of a single-element scanning system, considering the remarkable signal-to-noise ratio of photoacoustic signals generated by a single-element transducer. By employing blood vessel-like phantoms and ex vivo brain phantoms, we demonstrated the superior efficacy of the single-element scanning method over the transducer array system in the context of brain hemorrhage detection.

This study sought to understand how young adults (age 18-25) with histories of mental health disorders are coping with disrupted transitions to adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional web survey was conducted in March-June 2021 of 967 US young adults with pre-pandemic psychiatric disability to assess their current psychiatric status, interrupted transitions, and associations with social determinants including income, community participation, and social context. Mental health was assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version.

Vacuole fusion is driven by SNARE proteins that require activation-or priming-by the AAA+ protein Sec18 (NSF) before they can bring membranes together and trigger the merger of two bilayers into a continuous membrane. Sec18 resides on vacuoles prior to engaging inactive cis-SNARE complexes through its interaction with the regulatory lipid phosphatidic acid (PA). The soluble N-ethylmaleimide sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) protein complex drives membrane fusion, and this process is further aided by accessory proteins, including complexin and α-synuclein. To understand the molecular mechanism underlying membrane fusion, we introduce an all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. This method is used to understand and predict the conformations of protein and lipids, membrane geometry, and their interaction at femtosecond precision, by describing complex chemical systems with atomic models.
