Imaging research laboratories are rapidly creating machine learning systems that achieve expert human performance using open-source methods and tools. These artificial intelligence systems are being developed to improve medical image reconstruction, noise reduction, quality assurance, triage, segmentation, computer-aided detection, computer-aided classification, and radiogenomics. In August 2018, a meeting was held in Bethesda, Maryland, at the National Institutes of Health to discuss the current state of the art and knowledge gaps and to develop a roadmap for future research initiatives.

Purpose To identify the features at CT that are predictive of spread through air spaces (STAS) in surgically resected lung adenocarcinomas. Materials and Methods For this retrospective study, presence of STAS was evaluated in 948 consecutive patients who underwent surgical resection for lung adenocarcinoma from April 2015 to December 2016. Patients who were positive for STAS and negative for STAS were matched at a ratio of 1:2 by using patient variables (age, sex, and smoking status).

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is an important complication in surgical patients. Existing biomarkers and clinical prediction models underestimate the risk for developing AKI. We recently reported data from two trials of 728 and 408 critically ill adult patients in whom urinary TIMP2•IGFBP7 (NephroCheck, Astute Medical) was used to identify patients at risk of developing AKI.

Background: Recent evidence suggests that current antimicrobial dosing may be inadequate for some critically ill patients. A major contributor in patients with unimpaired renal function may be Augmented Renal Clearance (ARC), wherein urinary creatinine clearance exceeds that predicted by serum creatinine concentration. We used pharmacokinetic data to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a recently proposed ARC score.

Organic wastes are common in nature and generated at different sources which need to be treated before disposing into the environment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) process is a primary technique used for digestion and reduction of the ill effects of disposing the organic waste. Selection of appropriate feed stock for anaerobic digestion among the available options is a primary concern and the process efficiency and stability largely depend on this.

Cardiomyocyte death after ischemia/reperfusion correlates with oxidant stress, and antioxidants confer protection in that model. Preconditioning (PC) with hypoxia or adenosine also confers protection, leading us to hypothesize that PC protects by attenuating oxidant generation during subsequent ischemia/reperfusion. Chick cardiomyocytes were preconditioned with 10 minutes of hypoxia or adenosine (100 micromol/L), followed by 1 hour of simulated ischemia and 3 hours of reperfusion.
