Background Context: The effects of using off-label recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP)-2 for interbody fusion are controversial. Although animal models of posterolateral fusion are well-established, establishing animal models to validate the safety and efficacy of interbody fusion is difficult, which may contribute to the inconsistent clinical results.
Purpose: To develop a novel animal model of interbody fusion in rat coccygeal vertebrae without destroying bony endplates.
Objective: In SILIUS (NCT01214343), combination of sorafenib and hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy did not significantly improve overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compared with sorafenib alone. In this study, we explored the relationship between objective response by mRECIST and OS in the sorafenib group, in the combination group, and in all patients in the SILIUS trial.
Methods: Association between objective response and OS in patients treated with sorafenib ( = 103) or combination ( = 102) and all patients ( = 205) were analyzed.

Aim: Several studies have recently reported that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurrence does not differ between hepatitis C virus patients receiving interferon (IFN)-based and IFN-free treatments considering the patients' backgrounds. However, liver fibrosis was not directly considered in these studies.
Methods: In total, 3972 patients without a history of HCC who started IFN-based or IFN-free treatment between August 2002 and April 2017 at 30 Japanese hospitals and achieved a sustained virologic response were included.

Purpose: Liver shape variations have been considered as feasible indicators of liver fibrosis. However, current statistical shape models (SSM) based on principal component analysis represent gross shape variations without considering the association with the fibrosis stage. Therefore, we aimed at the application of a statistical shape modelling approach using partial least squares regression (PLSR), which explicitly uses the stage as supervised information, for understanding the shape variations associated with the stage as well as predicting it in contrast-enhanced MR images.

Background: Current practice guidelines recommend the use of ultrasound (US) as an initial surveillance tool for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with liver cirrhosis. Patients with liver cirrhosis, however, frequently have coarse liver parenchyma, masking the presence of tiny nodules during B-mode US. Contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) with Sonazoid has a long-lasting, stable Kupffer phase, which makes it possible to scan the entire liver to depict small lesions.

Aim: Sofosbuvir (SOF) and ribavirin (RBV) combination therapy has improved the sustained virologic response (SVR) rate and shortened the treatment duration for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2 infection. Ribavirin-induced hemolytic anemia is one of the most troublesome side-effects of SOF/RBV therapy; however, factors associated with this condition have not been fully elucidated. We aimed to identify a safer way to complete treatment with SOF/RBV therapy by examining factors related to RBV-induced hemolytic anemia and identifying patients who did not develop anemia.

Backgrounds: Many patients with gastric cancer relapse during or early after adjuvant chemotherapy. The standard treatment for early relapse patients is a second-line chemotherapy (SLC) based on irinotecan, taxanes, or a platinum-based chemotherapy. The platinum-containing biweekly irinotecan plus cisplatin (IRI/CDDP) combination was assumed to be promising in several reports of clinical trials as SLC.

An increasing number of patients have been using anticoagulants including anti-vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs); however, in patients using anticoagulants, limited data are available with regard to the risks of gastrointestinal bleeding and thromboembolic events during the peri-endoscopic period. We aimed to evaluate the peri-endoscopic bleeding and thrombotic risks in patients administered VKAs or DOACs. Consecutive patients using anticoagulants who underwent endoscopic biopsy, mucosal resection, or submucosal dissection were prospectively enrolled across 11 hospitals.

Aim: In patients with chronic hepatitis C, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurs at a certain frequency, even if a sustained virologic response (SVR) is achieved by antiviral treatment. Old age, liver fibrosis, and high post-treatment α-fetoprotein (AFP) level are typical risk factors of post-SVR HCC. We examined whether the frequencies and factors of HCC in patients with an SVR achieved from interferon treatment changed.

Eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) is a subtype of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) that is characterized by intractable nasal polyp formation. Eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN) is an eosinophil granule protein that is closely related to allergic inflammation, but the pathological implications of EDN in ECRS remain unknown. In this study, we evaluated the function of EDN in ECRS pathogenesis and assessed its potential as a disease activity marker.

Background: Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy plus sorafenib in phase 2 trials has shown favourable tumour control and a manageable safety profile in patients with advanced, unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. However, no randomised phase 3 trial has tested the combination of sorafenib with continuous arterial infusion chemotherapy. We aimed to compare continuous hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy plus sorafenib with sorafenib alone in patients with advanced, unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma.

Accurate staging of liver fibrosis is crucial to guide therapeutic decisions for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Digital image analysis has emerged as a promising tool for quantitative assessment of fibrosis in chronic liver diseases. We sought to determine the relationship of histologic fibrosis stage with fiber amounts quantified in liver biopsy specimens for the better understanding of NAFLD progression.

Background: Non-hypervascular hypointense hepatic nodules during the hepatobiliary phase of gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced MRI have been reported to be associated with intrahepatic distant recurrence (IDR) after hepatectomy or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). IDR is categorized into hypervascular transformation of non-hypervascular hypointense hepatic nodules and new intrahepatic recurrence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between non-hypervascular hypointense hepatic nodules on Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI and IDR after RFA, focusing on new intrahepatic recurrence.
