Introduction: QT interval prolongation is a risk factor for fatal arrhythmias and other cardiovascular complications. QT interval prolongation in patients on hemodialysis (HD) is not well understood. Hypocalcemia is a suspected, but poorly verified etiology in these patients, and the association between serum phosphorus levels and QT interval prolongation is unknown.

Hyperkalemia presentation at a clinic during the cold season.

Familial pseudohyperkalemia (FP) is an underrecognized cause of pseudohyperkalemia, caused by the leaking of potassium from red blood cells. This extracellular shift of potassium is temperature-dependent and occurs when blood samples are stored below room temperature or for a long time, manifesting as apparent hyperkalemia. We report a suspicious case of FP, which demonstrated an apparent seasonal trajectory of serum-potassium levels at the local clinic.

Aim: The aging society is expanding, and more elderly patients are admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Elderly patients may have increased ICU mortality and are thought to have a high incidence of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). There are few studies of PICS in the elderly.

Cryptococcal Pleuritis in an Immunocompetent Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Cryptococcosis, primarily an opportunistic infection, often occurs in immunocompromised patients but can also affect immunocompetent individuals. Cryptococcosis typically manifests in the lungs, but pleurisy is rare, particularly in immunocompetent patients. This report details a case of cryptococcal pleuritis in a 74-year-old immunocompetent male with a history of heart failure, presenting initially with pleural effusion.

Sarcomatoid malignant pleural mesothelioma: a case of long-term recurrence-free survival following curative intent surgery alone.

Background: Curative intent surgery may be indicated for some patients with resectable early stage malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). However, sarcomatoid MPM is a highly aggressive subtype for which curative intent surgery is generally not recommended.

Lenvatinib is an approved therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Pulmonary amyloidosis is characterized by extracellular deposition of fibrous protein called amyloid in the lungs and has three subtypes: nodular, diffuse, and tracheobronchial amyloidosis. Pulmonary nodular amyloidosis can mimic other lung diseases including infectious diseases, metastatic lung tumors, sarcoidosis, and pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma. A biopsy of the lesion is essential for a definitive diagnosis.

Methods: Between 2011 and 2020, we enrolled 1,259,960 patients with OHCA into a nationwide prospective population-based registry in Japan.

Eppikajutsuto (EPTJ) is used to reduce redundant body fluids and suppress inflammation. We observed that EPTJ shortened the duration of treatment in an elderly patient with burn injuries. A 96-year-old man suffered superficial partial-thickness burns on the dorsum of his right hand and left knee.

How to Overcome the Barriers Behind Writing Case Reports for Beginners and Young General Physicians.

Background: Case reports are fundamental to clinical medicine that trace back to ancient Egypt preceding Hippocrates in the history of medicine. Case reports contribute to academic development and new clinical research. However, among cases presented at an annual academic conference for Japanese generalists, only a few cases were later published in peer-reviewed journals, highlighting potential barriers regarding the writing of case reports, such as mentorship absence.

Intensive care unit follow-up clinic activities: a scoping review.

The importance of ongoing post-discharge follow-up to prevent functional impairment in patients discharged from intensive care units (ICUs) is being increasingly recognized. Therefore, we conducted a scoping review, which included existing ICU follow-up clinic methodologies using the CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and CINAHL databases from their inception to December 2022. Data were examined for country or region, outpatient name, location, opening days, lead profession, eligible patients, timing of the follow-up, and assessment tools.

Purpose: To compare the details, oncologists include in discharge letters with what home care physicians need. Although discharge letters are important to share patients' information for home palliative care, few studies have compared the details, especially patients' emotions, regarding what oncologists include in discharge letters and home care physicians' needs.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by sending anonymous, self-administered questionnaires to 500 certified oncologists (OCs) and 500 directors of home care supporting clinics (HCs) in Japan between March and May 2023.

Life Course Epidemiology of Hip Osteoarthritis in Japan: A Multicenter, Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: The incidence of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in Japanese newborns has reduced drastically following a primary prevention campaign initiated around 1972 to 1973; this perinatal education campaign promoted maintaining the hips of newborns in the naturally flexed-leg position. The purpose of the present study was to describe the life course epidemiology of hip osteoarthritis (OA) in adolescent and adult patients and to assess its association with exposure to the primary prevention campaign for DDH.

Methods: We included new patients with hip OA diagnosed from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, at 12 core hospitals (8 special-function hospitals and 4 regional medical care support hospitals).

Significance of early diagnosis and surgical management in treating Mycobacterium immunogenum-related pyogenic extensor tenosynovitis: a case report.

Background: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental organisms that are increasingly contributing to human infections. Mycobacterium immunogenum, a variant of NTM discovered in 2001, is a rapidly growing mycobacterium that exhibits multidrug resistance. Reports of infections caused by this organism, particularly tenosynovitis in the musculoskeletal system, are limited.

Usefulness of Computed Tomography for Evaluating the Effects of Bronchial Thermoplasty in Japanese Patients with Severe Asthma.

Background: Bronchial thermoplasty (BT) improves clinical outcomes and quality of life for patients with severe asthma and has shown sustained reductions in airway narrowing and air trapping in previous CT studies. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive analysis, including CT evaluation, of clinical outcomes in Japanese patients who have undergone BT for severe asthma. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of BT in Japanese asthma patients, with a focus on the CT metric "WA at Pi10" to assess airway disease.

Supplementary Contribution of Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-Performance Status to Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment in the Detection of Bacteremia Among Older Patients With Suspected Infections.

Background The Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) is a simple method for identifying patients with bacteremia; however, it is not accurate for predicting it. Performance status assessment involves the evaluation of daily activities and could be beneficial in predicting bacteremia. We aimed to evaluate whether adding Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-Performance Status (ECOG-PS) to qSOFA could improve the prediction of bacteremia diagnosis in older patients admitted with suspected infections.
