Ultra-high-Q resonances in plasmonic metasurfaces.

Nat Commun

February 2021

School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, ON, Canada.

Plasmonic nanostructures hold promise for the realization of ultra-thin sub-wavelength devices, reducing power operating thresholds and enabling nonlinear optical functionality in metasurfaces. However, this promise is substantially undercut by absorption introduced by resistive losses, causing the metasurface community to turn away from plasmonics in favour of alternative material platforms (e.g.

A model for predicting the rate constants of hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the α-C-H bond of -substituted benzyl alcohols to -oxyl radicals was proposed. To quantify the factors governing the reactivity of both -oxyl radicals and benzyl alcohols, multivariate regression analysis was performed using various combinations of reactivity parameters. The analysis was based on a 2D array of 35 HAT reactions, the rate constants of which span 4 orders of magnitude.

The reductive activity of various basidiomycetous fungi towards carbonyl compounds was screened on an analytical level. Some strains displayed high reductive activities toward aromatic carbonyls and aliphatic ketones. Utilizing growing whole-cell cultures of Dichomitus albidofuscus, the reactions were up-scaled to a preparative level in an aqueous system.

Hyperpolarizability of Plasmonic Meta-Atoms in Metasurfaces.

Nano Lett

January 2021

School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontairo K1N 6N5, Canada.

Plasmonic metasurfaces are promising as enablers of nanoscale nonlinear optics and flat nonlinear optical components. Nonlinear optical responses of such metasurfaces are determined by the nonlinear optical properties of individual plasmonic meta-atoms. Unfortunately, no simple methods exist to determine the nonlinear optical properties (hyperpolarizabilities) of the meta-atoms hindering the design of nonlinear metasurfaces.

We propose a novel class of mixed fluctuations with different orientations and fractal scaling features as a model for anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) trajectories hypothesized to appear in complex systems. Furthermore, we develop the oriented fractal scaling component analysis (OFSCA) to decompose such mixed fluctuations into the original orientation components. In the OFSCA, the original orientations are detected based on the principle that the original angles are orthogonal to the angles with the minimum and maximum scaling exponents of the mixed fluctuations.

Development and Experiments of an Electrothermal Driven Deep-Sea Buoyancy Control Module.

Micromachines (Basel)

November 2020

National Center for International Research of Subsea Engineering Technology and Equipment, Dalian Maritime University, Dalian 116026, China.

Due to the extremely high pressures in the deep sea, heavy ballast tanks and pressure compensating hydraulic tanks are typically required to support the operation of classic buoyancy controls. Buoyancy control systems driven by phase-change materials (PCM) have unique advantages over conventional hydraulically actuated buoyancy control systems, including high adaptability for deep-sea exploration and simple, lightweight, and compact structures. Inspired by this, a buoyancy control module (BCM) was designed with flexible material as the shell.

This study introduces a framework for the information-theoretic analysis of brain functional connectivity performed at the level of electroencephalogram (EEG) sources. The framework combines the use of common spatial patterns to select the EEG components which maximize the variance between two experimental conditions, simultaneous implementation of vector autoregressive modeling (VAR) with independent component analysis to describe the joint source dynamics and their projection to the scalp, and computation of information dynamics measures (information storage, information transfer, statistically significant network links) from the source VAR parameters. The proposed framework was tested on simulated EEGs obtained mixing source signals generated under different coupling conditions, showing its ability to retrieve source information dynamics from the scalp signals.

Optical Engineering Department, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, pr. Peremogy 37, Kyiv 03 056, Ukraine. Electronic address:

Abbe theory of image formation can be expanded from two-dimensional to three-dimensional space. It has to consider an optical system that forms an image of a grating in an object space. It is possible to introduce various inclinations of this grating relatively the optical axis round the axis in the object plane that is parallel to its slits.

Kinetics of -oxyl Radicals' Decay.

J Org Chem

June 2020

Faculty of Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnologies, Vasyl' Stus Donetsk National University, Vinnytsia 21021 Ukraine.

-oxyl radicals of various structures were generated by oxidation of corresponding -hydroxy compounds with iodobenzene diacetate, [bis(trifluoroacetoxy)]iodobenzene, and ammonium cerium(IV) nitrate in acetonitrile. The decay rate of -oxyl radicals follows first-order kinetics and depends on the structure of -oxyl radicals, reaction conditions, and the nature of the solvent and oxidant. The values of the self-decay constants change within 1.

Structural phase transformations in annealed Pt/Mn/Fe trilayers.

J Phys Condens Matter

June 2020

Metal Physics Department, National Technical University of Ukraine, 'Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute', Prospect Peremogy 37, 03056 Kyiv, Ukraine.

Thermally-activated phase transitions in Pt/Mn/Fe thin films were investigated by a combination of x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, secondary neutral mass spectrometry depth profiling, atomic force microscopy, and magnetic properties measurements. Post-annealing was carried out in vacuum to different temperatures up to 620 °C. Initially, at temperatures between 280 °C-450 °C first L1-MnPt is formed at the Mn/Pt interface followed by the most likely formation of metastable bcc FePt, which gets transformed by further annealing to fcc FePt and eventually to chemically ordered L1-FePt.

It is discussed that the classical effective medium theory for the elastic properties of random heterogeneous materials is not congruous with the effective medium theory for the electrical conductivity. In particular, when describing the elastic and electro-conductive properties of a strongly inhomogeneous two-phase composite material, the steep rise of effective parameters occurs at different concentrations. To achieve the logical concordance between the cross-property relations, a modification of the effective medium theory of the elastic properties is introduced.
