Background:  Complex underlying mechanisms consisting of cytotoxic, excitotoxic, and inflammatory effects of intraparenchymal hemorrhage (ICH) are responsible for the highly detrimental effects on brain tissue. Oxidative stress also plays a significant role in brain damage after ICH; however, it is less important than other factors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress parameters malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant-reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CT) activities in operated and nonoperated patients with spontaneous ICH.

The effect of low-dose and high-dose low-molecular-weight-heparin and aspirin thromboprophylaxis on clinical outcome and mortality in critical ill patients with COVID-19: A retrospective cohort study.

Saudi Med J

July 2022

From the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation (Eman, Balaban, Şahin, Demir, Pekşen, Erdem); from the Department of Intensive Care (Süner), Sakarya Training and Research Hospital; from the Department of Intensive Care (Cırdı), faculty of Medicine, Sakarya University, Sakarya; and from the Department of Medical Services and Techniques (Musmul), Eskisehir Osmangazi University Vocational School of Health Services, Eskisehir, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of different thromboprophylaxis regimens (low-dose vs. high-dose low-molecular-weight heparin, and high-dose combined with aspirin) on mortality and clinical outcomes in critically ill COVID-19 patients.
  • A review of 475 patient records led to the inclusion of 164 patients, with no significant differences found in mortality rates, ICU length of stay, or rates of major hemorrhagic and thrombotic events across the three treatment groups.
  • The findings concluded that high-dose anticoagulation and the addition of aspirin did not improve patient outcomes compared to low-dose therapy, indicating similar safety profiles across the regimens.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a single-stranded RNA virus that causes many diseases such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and gastrointestinal diseases. Although it has been shown that the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor, which has a high affinity for the SARS-CoV-2 is mostly expressed in the lungs, it is also expressed especially in the cells of the testicular tissue. Although there are studies showing the effect of SARS-CoV-2 on spermatogenesis, the effects of COVID-19 on sperm count, motility, and morphology are still unclear.

Vitrified-warmed blastocyst transfer timing related to LH surge in true natural cycle and its impact on ongoing pregnancy rates.

Reprod Biomed Online

September 2022

Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ankara, Turkey; Anatolia IVF and Women's Health Center, Ankara, Turkey. Electronic address:

Research Question: Does the timing of warmed blastocyst transfer in true natural cycle (tNC) differ according to six different commonly used definitions of LH surge, and do differences in timing have any impact on ongoing pregnancy rate (OPR)?

Design: Prospective monitoring, including repeated blood sampling and ultrasound analyses of 115 warmed blastocyst transfer cycles performed using tNC between January 2017 and October 2021.

Results: The reference timing of follicular collapse +5 days would be equivalent to LH surge +6 days in only 5.2-41.

Background: Nesfatin-1 (NES-1), an anorexigenic peptide, was reported to have anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic actions in several inflammation models.

Methods: To elucidate potential renoprotective effects of NES-1, unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) was induced in male Sprague Dawley rats by ligating left ureters. The rats were injected intraperitoneally with either saline (SL) or NES-1 (10 µg/kg/day) for 7 or 14 days (n = 8 in each group).

Background: Achilles tendon (AT) midsubstance injuries may heal suboptimally, especially in athletes. Transforming growth factor-beta 3 (TGF-β3) shows promise because of its recently discovered tendinogenic effects. Using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA-b-PEG) nanoparticles (NPs) may enhance the results by a sustained-release effect.
