MANAGEMENT DELAYS AND OUTCOMES IN ST-ELEVATION MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION (STEMI) IN THE COVID-19 ERA IN SENEGAL: INSIGHTS FROM A TERTIARY CENTER.

Background: Low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) face many challenges regarding the timely management of STEMI, and the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our already fragile health systems.

Objectives: To assess the delays in managing STEMI during COVID-19 and evaluate the 6-month mortality rates related to these delays.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted over two years at a tertiary center in Dakar, Senegal.

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Palate: Diagnostic and Surgical Strategy.

Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor of the salivary glands. It develops preferentially in the parotid gland. The authors report a localization of a pleomorphic adenoma on the palate and discuss the value of CT scan in therapeutic strategy.

Surgical Treatment of Upper Cervical Spine Trauma: Experience in a Regional Neurosurgery Unit in a Country with Limited Health Care Resources-About 22 Consecutives Cases.

 Representing approximately 22% of cervical spine injuries, upper cervical spine injuries are becoming more frequent with the increase in road traffic accidents. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the results of our surgical series and to compare them with the literature.  In this monocentric retrospective study of over three years (June 2019-May 2022), all the patients with traumatic injuries of the upper cervical spine with a surgical treatment and a minimum of 12 months follow-up were included.

Epidemiology and composition of upper urinary tract lithiasis in Senegalese population: a multicenter retrospective study.

Urolithiasis is a major public health issue due to its increasing prevalence. The objective of this study was to describe the spectrophotometric profile of upper urinary tract stones (UTS) in Senegal. We conducted a multicenter retrospective study of all patients treated for upper UTS whose chemical composition was analyzed from January 2014 to January 2020 in eight regions of Senegal.

Detection of urological cancers by the signature of organic volatile compounds in urine, from dogs to electronic noses.

Purpose Of Review: Urine volatile organic compound (VOC) testing for early detection of urological cancers is a minimally invasive and promising method. The objective of this review was to present the results of recently published work on this subject.

Recent Findings: Organic volatile compounds are produced through oxidative stress and peroxidation of cell membranes, and they are eliminated through feces, urine, and sweat.

Lithopedion as a factor in post-traumatic intestinal perforation.

Lithopedion is a rare condition secondary to retention and calcification of an unrecognized intra-abdominal (usually ectopic) pregnancy after a fetal death, which occurred after three months of gestation. It accounts for 1.5%-2% of cases of ectopic pregnancy.

Cancer in sub-Saharan Africa: a Lancet Oncology Commission.

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), urgent action is needed to curb a growing crisis in cancer incidence and mortality. Without rapid interventions, data estimates show a major increase in cancer mortality from 520 348 in 2020 to about 1 million deaths per year by 2030. Here, we detail the state of cancer in SSA, recommend key actions on the basis of analysis, and highlight case studies and successful models that can be emulated, adapted, or improved across the region to reduce the growing cancer crises.

The kidney's primary squamous cell carcinoma is a rare tumor, representing 0.5-0.8% of malignant renal tumors and 4% of upper urinary tract tumors.

A case of pyelo-ureteral junction bilharzioma.

Bilharziomas are inflammatory tumour-like masses which often pose the problem of differential diagnosis with neoplastic processes. Its location at the pyelo-ureteral junction is very uncommon. The pre-operative diagnosis of bilharzia of the pyelo-ureteral junction is difficult.

Decompressive craniectomy: indications and results of 24 cases at the neurosurgery clinic of Fann university hospital of Dakar.

Decompressive craniectomy is a surgical technique considered to be the last step in the management of intracranial hypertension. The objective of our study was to evaluate our results in the management of intracranial hypertension by decompressive craniectomy. This was a retrospective study of 24 cases of decompressive craniectomy performed over a 9-year period (from January 2010 to December 2019) at the Fann Neurosurgery Clinic.

Results of radial head resection after Mason type 3 or 4 fracture of the elbow.

Background: Resection of the radial head is a surgical indication for comminuted radial head fracture in which internal fixation is inaccessible. Some complications from the surgery can alter the function of the patient's elbow. The objective of this study was to assess functional outcome of the elbow after resection of the radial head.
